“As a textile designer I love pattern and color, and I went for it in my bedroom,” says Bari J. Ackerman, who lives in Scottsdale, AZ. “I started with the deep teal velvet bed from Joybird as the ka-bang! element. Then I enhanced the tray ceiling with flowery wallpaper I designed. To balance things out, I added complementary pops of pink in art from Chairish and a tasseled throw from Kip&Co, and kept the rest of the room neutral. It all works together—with a lot of maximalist energy!” 14 HGTV Magazine

Paint shades we love and how to use them.

“I wanted a light and fresh look for our kitchen that still fit our home’s historic roots. I added character to the new cabinets with a supersoft gray and went with my go-to white for the walls. It’s a cooler white, so it does a good job of balancing out the warm tones of the reclaimed wood.” —Jackie Hempel, Finding Lovely, Wellesley, MA

“My girls’ room used to be a soft pink, but as they’ve gotten older, they’ve fallen for different colors. A soft, creamy white for the walls and white bunk beds keeps the focus on their evolving styles—and won’t be something we’ll have to paint over every year!”

SWAP PAPER FOR FABRIC I’m a fan of furoshikistyle—Japanese wrapping done with fabric. Use a piece at least double the gift’s size. Place it in the center of the fabric, fold the bottom and top pieces over it, flip it over, and tie the ends together in a knot at the center. You can see techniques in online videos. I wrapped my sister’s gift in a scarf last year, she loved it!

MAKE A POM-POM BOW Adorbs. The how-to: Tie a 10-inch-wide piece of tulle around a gift and cut the ends to about 1 foot long. Fold each end into a cone shape, drop mini pom-poms into the bottoms, and carefully tie into a bow. Trim, fluff it up, and massage to disperse the poms.

GIVE TINSEL RIBBON A TRY
7
Instead of using the usual ribbon for a gift’s finishing touch, trade it for tinsel ribbon (a.k.a. tinsel garland and tinsel trim). We love this fashionista that comes wrapped in 10 yards of white tinsel ribbon. Another idea: Use tinsel ribbon to spell out someone’s name on a present, attached with hot glue. Pair white, silver, or gold tinsel with bright blue or solid red gift wrap. Doubles as an ornament when she’s not wrapped in ribbon.

I’ll pick up inexpensive metal lanterns, cut wrapping paper into pieces slightly larger than the glass panes, and stick them inside the lantern using glue dots. good question
how bad is it? Find out what’s total Scrooge ’tude—and what’s in good spirit. NOT BAH, HUMBUG!
GETTY IMAGES
how bah, humbug is it to not reciprocate when a friend sends a holiday card? Relax, you won’t be a joy buzzkill. “Holiday spirit is about spreading cheer, so accept the sweet gesture of a greeting for what it is,” says Elaine Swann, founder of The Swann School of Protocol in Carlsbad, CA. Keep in mind, too, that people are more than happy to show off photos of their kids. “And nobody’s really keeping tabs on whether or not they receive a card back,” says Swann. Still, a quick text or email to those who didn’t receive a greeting from you will be appreciated: “Thanks for the adorable card, everyone looks awesome. Happy Holidays to all, xoxo.” As Swann says, “The feelings behind gestures are what stick with us—the cards get tossed after the New Year.”
NOT BAH, HUMBUG! WRITTEN BY JULIANNE PEPITONE
BAH, HUMBUG!
good question
how bah, humbug is it to not hang a stocking for your pet? Maybe dogs and cats won’t pout about being left off the mantel lineup, but your kids might— pets are family, after all. Stockings for them are to your benefit when presents are opened: “Anyone who’s had to clean up wrapping paper shredded by a dog on Christmas Day knows they’re an excellent way to unveil new and exciting toys,” says Kate Abbott, cohost of the podcast It’s A Doggy Dog World. For her Jack Russell terrier, Qwill, and cocker spaniel mix, Katie, she’s stuffed stockings with plushies and homemade biscuits. Felines will purr over wand toys and catnip-dispensing balls. And food puzzles are a treat for any four-legged friend. Just consider waiting till Christmas morning to put in snackables, so your pet isn’t tempted to keep leaping up or jumping onto the mantel for a preview.
BAH, HUMBUG!
A great gift is a great gift, and if it just so happens to be perfect for a couple of family members, then go for it, says Mary Steffel, Ph.D., a professor of marketing at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, who studies consumer behavior. “People tend to obsess over holiday shopping, but the reality is, each recipient will appreciate a nice present, unique or not.” In fact, her research has found that when gift givers overly focus on not repeating prezzies, they end up choosing more obscure stuff that receivers might not like as much. If your aunts enjoy baking, they’ll each adore the adorable oven mitts you found. Sidestep any in-person gift-opening awkwardness by saying something like, “I loved this so much, I couldn’t resist getting it for both of you!”

how bah, humbug is it to give relatives the same gift?
PICKY. PASSIONATE. PROUD. ©2020 Blue Buffalo Co., Ltd.
Like BLUE.
We’re picky about the high-quality ingredients that go into BLUE foods and treats. From the start, the first ingredient in BLUE for Cats has always been high-quality, real meat. Not just a trend, but part of our foundation. And a big reason why millions of pet parents have trusted us since .003.
Love them like family. Feed them like family.®
good question
how bah, humbug is it to break the news about Santa to a child who’s not your own? “When it comes to cultural and philosophical matters that parents establish for a child, no one has a right to tread on them,” says John Mayer, Ph.D., a pediatric and adolescent psychologist in Chicago, IL. Rather than reprimanding, “say plainly, ‘Look, Nicky believes, and we’ve felt it’s important to keep that going for him.’ Let them know they crossed a boundary to help ensure they don’t do it again.” Keep the fantasy alive for little ones by explaining, “Maybe Uncle Claude said that because some people don’t believe in Santa, but we do, and we’re going to have the best Christmas!” For older kids, discuss how the myth of Santa helps children learn about giving and morals (as in, naughty vs. nice) and is just plain fun, and assure them they can keep the magic going for younger kids.
BAH, HUMBUG!
Does it have a seriously feel-good message? Yep. Is “Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings” one of the most iconic lines ever? Yep. But there are no “musts” when it comes to movies, says Bob Mondello, a film critic for NPR. “Although It’s a Wonderful Life can be comforting to watch, there are other gorgeous classics, like The Shop Around the Corner and great newer classics like Black Nativity and A Christmas Story.” Really, whatever feels like tradition works: “I have friends who watch Die Hard every Christmas!” he says. If you want to introduce Wonderful Life to “ick-that’s-so-old” kids, head to YouTube for a choice scene.

do those lights right! Your outdoor twinkle is about to glow up. ON THE GARAGE DOOR Define the perimeter with globe lights—the bulbs are largish and generate enough light for a big space, says Erin Swift, founder of Holiday Workroom in New York City. Hang with removable light clips. As with all lights, test ’em before you start.
For major impact and that ooh… aah wintry gleam, there’s nothing like icicle lights hung from eaves.
ON PORCH COLUMNS
ON OUTDOORSY STUFF Small LED lights strung on gear like a bike, a wagon, or garden decor—such as your friendly lawn gnome—look fun and unexpected, says HGTV designer Taniya Nayak. Attach with zip ties or floral wire. 62 HGTV Magazine
Cluster lights pack in twinkle with every twist. To keep strands in place, says Swift, rest each loop of lights on light clips, sticking them on the back of the column as you go.
ILLUSTRATIONS BY SYDNEY VAN DYKE WRITTEN BY LIZ KRIEGER
help wanted ON DORMERS Highlight each dormer with a pre-lit battery-operated wreath hung in the window. Look for timer-operated ones so you don’t have to turn them on and off each night. Experts recommend having 2 to 4 inches of space between each side of the wreath and the window frame.
ON A BARE-BRANCH TREE Choose mini LEDs with at least 300 lights per strand, says Lance Allen, who oversees holiday decorations for The Home Depot. It’ll be a bright moment for your utility bill, too—LEDs can use up to about 75% less energy than incandescent lights.
ON SHRUBS OR BUSHES All hail net lighting: “It’s a quick way to cover a lot of greenery and ensure uniformly spaced light,” says Allen. “Gently pull some branches through the holes in the net for the most natural look.”
help wanted
ON AN EVERGREEN TREE Teardrop-shaped C7 or C9 bulbs stand out against the thick greenery. Do at least 50 lights per vertical foot. “For trees taller than 5 feet, get a helper to hand them to you,” says Swift. Weave in and out of branches so your spruce or pine looks lit from within.
ON WINDOWS You want a smooth ribbon of light that melds with the glow coming from inside. For that, reach for LED rope lights that you can attach with light clips or staples.
ON RAILINGS Strands of icicle lights here, too, offer great coverage across and down. No worries about getting them totally straight—ripples mimic the real deal.
DON’T FORGET THE YARD! Lighting up the same tree every year? Consider having an in-ground power outlet installed—so you’ll have fewer (if any) extension cords to contend with.
64 HGTV Magazine
Looking out into pitch darkness: not so festive. Light up a tire swing, the kids’ swing set, or the doghouse, says Nayak. Battery-operated twinkle lights are a particularly happy sight.

…and easygoing and naturally unfussy in this St. Paul, MN, home.
sunroom Long Minnesota winters are no match for this cheerful addition off the kitchen. Emphasizing the vaulted ceiling, a gallery wall stagger-steps upward. IKEA cabinets got an easy DIY update: A cushion topper made from a piece of plywood, a rectangle of foam, and a windowpane fabric from JoAnn turned them into a perfect spot for putting on and taking off boots. The snowflake pillows are from Arcadia Home. PHOTOGRAPHS BY ADAM ALBRIGHT STYLED BY MATTHEW GLEASON
Joe and Kate with August, 4, and Bennett, 2
hen Kate Arends and Joe Peters moved into this 1,900-square-foot Tudor in St. Paul, MN, in 2014, it was just them. Within a few years, there was a lovable English Lab, Winnie, skittering around and two animated kids racing from room to room (sometimes in search of Winnie). Given the whirl of joyful activity, it’s no surprise that Kate, creator of the Wit & Delight blog, was looking for a distinctly peaceful, practical home with style—or, as she says, “a place of comfort and beauty.” When it came to decorating, she turned to sleek, Scandinavian-style pieces and neutral colors, along with hushed tones of blue, blush, and green. Paying respect to the home’s almost 100-year-old history, she worked around existing beams, arches, and various funky wall angles. “We are at a time in our lives where we spill things and the house will be messy,” she says. “But that doesn’t mean we have to wait to enjoy our space.”

living room “This super-cozy setup is our sweet spot—we spend lots of time here,” says Kate. The misty gray armchairs get pushed back to make way for board games played on the floor, the velvet ottoman is a plush landing pad, and a deep leather sofa (all pieces are from Article) is great for movie nights. Above the mantel, a Samsung Frame TV can showcase art on the screen. The vintage rug from Frances Loom beautifully disguises snags and stains. HGTV Magazine 71
kitchen “I wanted the kitchen to feel a bit moody, where the adults could sit and think over a cup of coffee, says Kate. (And ponder, say, the origins of dinosaurs with August.) So she chose a deep gray-green for all the cabinets, contrasted by a quartz-top white oak island. Brass pendants, brass cabinet hardware from Rejuvenation, and a brasshued faucet from Delta add glow.

Kate’s new hobby. “I needed a home for it that wasn’t on the floor (toddlers!), and it fit that wall nicely,” she says.
dining room Similar tones of wood keep the serenity going between the oak table from Article, an old IKEA coffee table repurposed as a bench, and retroesque rubberwood-blend chairs from Dot & Bo. Come Christmas Eve, the room is a flurry of paper— it’s where Kate and Joe cut out snowflakes and loops for paper chains to string up around the living room for an early morning surprise for the kids.

When life is hectic, it’s an escape to have a bedroom that’s cozy yet minimalist and airy. Ours feels like our own tree house. —Kate
main bedroom “To me, a bed with posts feels really adult!” says Kate. This one once had four, but losing the footboard and two posts was comfier for tall Joe. Blush bedding from Serena & Lily and a cream wool rug by Sarah Sherman Samuel are temptingly tranquil, yet the room is hardly a yawn. Zigzaggy lines on the bench from Lulu and Georgia jazz things up. And velvet curtains in golden yellow are, says Kate, “energizing and optimistic. It felt like something was missing until we added them.”

august’s room What kid wouldn’t want to live in an enchanted forest? August and his little sis refer to the Cole & Son wallpaper as “their woods,” says Kate, “and they love to ‘camp out’ here.” That is, when they’re not pretending the bunk bed is a pirate ship or hosting tea parties for stuffies on the pint-size Lulu and Georgia chairs. A round metal shelf from Target corrals books, keepsakes, and holiday decorations.

bennett’s room This was once Kate’s office. She left the peaceful mossy hue on the wall and brought in splashes of pink, her preschooler’s fave color (that fun print is from Amazon). The fringed rug from Rejuvenation and A-frame bookcase by Babyletto are popular destinations: “Bennett memorizes books I read to her and recites them,” says her proud mama. FOR SOURCES, SEE PAGE 105.

christmas A family in Florence, OR, creates seriously magical holidays.
a crafty living room One really fresh tree: To complement keepsake ornaments, this family ties ribbons in bright colors to the branches. This season: pink and orange for the win. Stockings made with care: They were easily done by sewing together strips of colored felt, cutting them into a stocking shape, then sewing the edges together. Coffee-table craftiness: The base was the metal drum of a washing machine! It was found at a thrift store, along with the tabletop. Spray-painted glossy white, they make one awesome piece.

Joybird armchairs with green upholstery look festive this time of year.
“A front door should represent your family, and this is us—fun and kind of loud!” says Ann. (For a similar shade, try Fun Yellow by SherwinWilliams.)

ust about every inch of this pretty house in Florence, OR, was DIYed by homeowners Ann and Brian Lacouture. A contractor by trade, Brian built it in 2016 from floor plans the couple designed, and crafts aficionado Ann decked it out in the ensuing years. Although she was working on a tight budget, it didn’t hold her back: “Even the most simple handmade things have a way of making a house more interesting and personal,” she says. Ann also put in pieces with “a traditional feel, but modernized” and bold patterns and colors. As a hands-on family, decorating for Christmas is something the Lacouture brood—Camp, 17; Jane, 15; Danin, 13; and Skip, 9—look forward to all year. Once Thanksgiving is over, they flock to Santa’s workshop (a.k.a. the crafting room). “Virtually every day at least one person is in that room making something,” says Brian. Playful punches of pinks, oranges, and turquoise bring the cheer just as much as traditional red and green, and mesh with their home’s eccentric style. “Our kids have said they love Christmas because of how our place feels,” says Ann. It just goes to show: The more crafts, the merrier.
Brian and Camp hang at the walnut island Brian built.
house tours Clear glass fixtures from Overstock keep the look light and airy.
a crafty kitchen Dried orange slices work great for garlands: Ann baked slices of orange on a parchment-lined cookie sheet at 200˚F for 2 hours, flipping them every half hour. She then strung them together with a needle and thread before wrapping them around an evergreen garland. “They add a burst of color and smell good too,” says Ann. Open cabinets + bright paper = wowza! Patterned wrapping paper from Spoonflower cut to size and attached with spray adhesive funs up these spots on top. Dangle a wreath: Command-hooked on a cabinet with a ribbon, it brings insta-cheer.
HGTV Magazine 83
a crafty dining room A light with year-round cheer: An IKEA pendant got a rad update with orange spray paint on the outside (Real Orange) and mint inside (Ocean Mist, both by Rust-Oleum). Paint chips can make amazing art: “Besides being free, you can find colors that match any decor perfectly,” Ann says of the DIYs adorning the shelves. She cut chips into triangles of various sizes and stuck them onto white kraft paper with a glue stick. Use rug samples, while you’re at it: Instead of upholstering an old bench in her kitchen, Ann stapled on four $12 sample pieces of fabric from Annie Selke (they match the Annie Selke rug on the front porch).
The mint seats of these Anthropologie chairs play off the inside of the light fixture.

a crafty…crafts room How cute are those yarn trees?! They’re formed by wrapping colorful yarn around conical floral foam and securing the ends with hot glue. The best gallery wall is an ever-changing gallery wall: Almost all of the art here, and throughout the home, was made by the Lacouture children. Ann regularly moves pieces from room to room, but everyone cooks up new creations for the holidays. Christmas tree string art is the coolest: And you don’t have to be a super-crafter to do it. Ann and her mother-in-law painted a giant square of plywood green, traced a tree shape, hammered brad nails an inch apart along the outline, then wove white string randomly throughout.
Craft supplies look like art on a pegboard Ann painted with a mix of leftover paint samples.

a crafty boys’ room Yes, those are floor planks on the ceiling: They were left over from the family’s previous home. Brian flipped the panels upside down and nailed them onto the ceiling in the room Skip (below) and Camp share. “It’s reminiscent of a basketball court,” says Ann. The stripes on the shades? Paint! Ann revived white woven shades with stripes in Kelly Green by Benjamin Moore. “She says she wanted them to pop next to the thrift store dresser,” says Brian, “but I think she just ran out of things to paint!” Speaking of: She spray-painted the bed Spring Green by Rust-Oleum to match. A paper-circle garland is always jolly: Ann used a circle punch to cut 2-inch dots from cardstock, then sewed them together with white thread.
Joy to the world! It’s a stick-on mural from World Maps Online.

Thorn flower wreaths from Target were hung in Christmas 2016; they looked so good, they’ve stayed put.
a crafty girls’ room Half-and-half Roman shades: To get the look of high-end window treatments in Jane and Danin’s room, Ann draped fabric she lined from Etsy store Premier Prints Express over a tension rod. She left the bottoms uneven to create a “pleat,” with the bamboo shade peeking out. Pom-pom garland greatness: The girls made pompoms the traditional way, from wrapping layers of yarn around pieces of cardboard to fraying the ends with scissors. Ann strung them into a garland. Ooh, handmade headboards: Brian cut the wood and Ann upholstered them with fabric from IKEA.
house tours
“It’s like a party on a wall!” Ann says of the floral wallpaper by Thibaut.
a crafty bathroom That vanity used to be a dresser: Brian installed a quartz countertop and double sinks on a vintage dresser that was once in Danin’s room, keeping its charm (including the scratches and dings) intact. “It still has her name carved into a panel from when she was little,” Ann says. Frosty the Snowman on the wall: It’s a commissioned piece by… Danin! The simplicity is a nice contrast with the bold wallpaper.
a crafty-ish bedroom Deck the headboard: An evergreen garland draped on top brings even more serene spirit to a low-key bedroom. To give lampshades new life… Ann hot-glued on fabric left over from her daughters’ Roman shade project. Not surprisingly, she re-covers them several times a year! Check out more of her Christmas craftiness on Instagram @annlacouture6. 88 HGTV Magazine

hile Mandi and Courtney Gubler’s kids have been known to jokingly ask, “Why can’t we live in a normal home?!” the family wouldn’t have it any other way. Three years ago, when the vacant general store in Santa Clara, UT—known as “The Merc”—went up for sale, the couple pounced on it. “We wanted to take a historic spot and make our mark on it,” says Mandi, creator of the blog Vintage Revivals. Surrounded by residential homes on the town’s main street, the gutted 1928 adobe structure hadn’t been used for 20 years. They turned the sun-filled 300-square-foot area near the front door into their kitchen. “We maxed out the space and went for an eclectic look, focusing on materials and details that feel like ones you’d see in an old store, but updated,” says Mandi. It’s become the family’s favorite spot. The penny candy may be long gone, but it feels like home sweet home.

cabinets Mandi researched how ’20s kitchens handled storage. Roomy built-in cabinets were becoming popular, often in darker colors. So she put in custom ceilingheight Shaker-style cabinets painted a deep green (Jasper by Sherwin-Williams), with steel pulls she designed and had made by a local metalworker.
plant wall floors Mandi sketched the largescale diamond pattern for the 1-inch hex tile floors from Daltile. “It’s in line with the period,” she says, “but also really special and impactful.” The vintage rug brings lived-in texture.
To avoid blocking out light but still provide privacy, the windows got frosted film and greenery galore. The hardiest plants are on the top shelf— less watering needed up there.

MUSHROOM-STUFFED PORK ROULADE 7 1
tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil pound wild mushrooms (such as oyster and/or hen of the woods), trimmed and sliced 1 small head garlic, minced Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper ½ cup finely chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh thyme, plus 2 sprigs 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary, plus 1 sprig 1 center-cut boneless pork loin roast (3½ to 4 pounds) ¼ cup dry sherry 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
tablespoon olive oil and the garlic to the other side of the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until the garlic is softened, about 30 seconds. Stir the garlic into the mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Let cool. 2. Meanwhile, combine the parsley, chopped thyme and rosemary and 3 tablespoons olive oil in a small bowl; season with salt and pepper. Set aside. 3. Butterfly the pork: Position your knife about one-third of the way up the length of the pork loin, with your knife parallel to the cutting board. Begin cutting into the pork, pulling the meat away with your other hand so that it opens up into a flat, evenly thick piece. Season the pork with salt and pepper, spread the herb oil over the top, and top with the mushrooms. Roll the pork into a log and tie in 1-inch intervals using kitchen twine. Season with salt and pepper. 4. Set a rack in a large roasting pan. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the pork, fat-side down, and cook until browned, about 3 minutes. Cook, turning,
until browned all over, 1 to 2 more minutes. Transfer the pork, seam-side down, to the rack in the pan. Roast on the lower oven rack until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the meat (not the filling) registers 135˚, 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. Transfer the pork on the rack to a cutting board, tent with foil and let rest 30 minutes. 5. Meanwhile, make the sauce: Skim off any excess fat from the juices in the roasting pan and add the sherry. Place the pan across two burners over medium-high heat. Add the thyme and rosemary sprigs and cook, scraping up any browned bits with a wooden spoon and stirring, until the liquid is reduced by about half, about 1 minute. Pour into a small saucepan, add the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Lower the heat so the liquid simmers and cook until slightly reduced, 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the butter and season with salt. Strain the sauce through a fine-mesh sieve. 6. Place the pork on the cutting board and remove the twine; cut into ½-inch-thick slices. Transfer to a platter and serve with the sauce.
