labors easy, and the h ope of whose bright smiles of approval has prompted all our efforts, this work is humbly and affection ately dedicated by the

EDITORS.

-5-

Consider the work of the ORACLE man Ye who cavil and sneer and blame when yon cau; Con ider the terms of the labor you ask, .A.nd the thankless reward of bis arduous task! You waut something witty, Rparkling, and new, Enough for a hundred pages or two;

Yon want lots of joke , at another's expense

.A.nd then there mu8t be on the suffering Prof; . .A . t lea t se\eral pages of grin els, gibs, and scoffs; You want many pictures, all funny ancl Rharp,

Were an old one repeated, you surely would carp .A.t the taste of tho. e Editorďż˝. "who hardly know Enough to keep out of the rain ancl the

.A.ad, finally, no matter what they ba>e done, This license you wr.ot for each mother's son, To be chary of praise and lavish of blame, To brand each defect with an empha ized name, To tel l bow i t would be if you had your say,

There's one thing yon clon't want, and that is-to pay.

-6-

HE editorial quil was just on the point of penning the announcement that the ORACLE e litor

were about to make their little bow

before the public, and of requesting that upon this, their

first

appearance, the foot-lights

should be dimmed, in order that a soft.er radiance might befit their mode ty, when it was struck with the most harrowing su picion tbat possibly this sentiment might not be strictly original.

Undismayed, however, tbe quill

determined to plunge at once in rnedias res, and to say something both striking and unique by addressing the gentle reader.

But, alas! in the very act of stabbing the period to

this last sentence, the point of tbe quill was frozen fast to the page by the chilling reflection that the gentle reader is -7-

a genus absolutely foreign to college life.

Excuse us, fair

ladies, we know you are the bl'ight particular stars in our Alma "JJtfater's crown; we worship you-at a distance, but we know you will not be gentle readers. Thoughts of the ladies quickly thawed out tbe ice-bound unfortunate, bis spil'its revived, and proclamation was at once made to tbe world of critics.

" Your enemy is about

to write a book; welcome the critic and bis criticism. " Lay on, Macduff, And damned be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough.'"

Like some other things in tbe world, life at our Univer sity bas two sides-an outside and an inside; the former is simply our stage attitude, painted, automatic, pre-arranged, giving very little idea of the real, active, joyous stream of student life that flows, or should flow, beneath.

Tbe ORA

CLE, as an agent sent forth, not only to explore the above mentioned rivulet and to bring to the surface its choicest treasures of fact, fancy, and fun, but also, if possible, to contribute something to the volume of its fl.ow, ri es, at this point, to report that that brook bas run dry.

Only a few

muddy pools were found, in wbicb, now and then, some discontented warbler sets up a dismal croaking. In an antiquarian point of view, however, the exploration may be said to have been successful in developing what is supposed once to have been the conr e of such a stream; and some curious fossils found in the bed, indicate that in former times some really ridiculous things were accustomed to happen, even in Colby. While the explorer was wondering why the stream no longer flowed, a point was reached where even the fossils ceased, and, near by, bones were found; a discovery which gave rise to the gloomiest kind of conjectures as to the fate -8 -

We know of no library -where so many advan

tages for discovering the contents of the thousands of books

upon the shelves are afforded; it seems to be as near com plete, in its way, as it is possible to ataio.

The 1ibrary is

deserving of the best efforts of the friends of the college, and more such generous

donators as Prof. Mathews and

Mr. Blanchard are anxiously awaited. The student life of the University bas ft.owed on much

as usual, the stream being only a little more sluggish, a movement altogether to be regretted.

In nothing is this

tendency seen more conspicuously than in the decadence of college song.

Once there were songs upon the campus, and

boys to sing them; the former have long since taken their flight, and the latter have abdicated in favor of the frogs. Things are rapidly assuming a dead level, and you can hardly distinguish a college boy from the vulgus profanitm.

As we write, the ghost of tbe Class of '80 jogs our elbow

just long enough to impart the information that all the members of that body secured their diplomas, then flits away, leaving the editor to wonder at the ease with which people may be forgotten.

The Ivy Day of the Class of '81 was pronounced by all to

be a model of its kind, an affair to be imitated not excelled. The universal verdict upon the Fre bmao Clas , in view of the record they have made during the last two term , i sui generis. Our literary safety valve, the Echo, bas gone on the even tenor of its way, only invigorated and strengthened by the lopping off of its superflnous branches, and the reduction of its editorial force from six to four. The illu trated yearly, known a

the Catalogue, made it

appearance a little later than u ual, nevertheless it met with a hearty welcome.

It i

somewhat checkered,

In ba e-ball we have woo

ictories and

sustained defeats, neitller being unduly elated by the one, nor greatly depressed by tbe other. -12-

Our Field Day was an undoubted success; records were made of which we were ju tly proucl.

Under the manage

ment of the Athletic Association, \Thich bas been formed, we look for even better re ult

in the future.

Such are some records we deemed it better to make here, because we could not portray them iu tbe succeeding pages.

More of our real life will be found there than here.

To those pages we invite your attention.

Of the embers bright,

Within my room I sit to-night; And as I muse

The changing hues

Seem to dissolve in old-time views. I see again,

And brawls, and sing ,

Far, vague and dim, Katabdin's brim ls veiled i n cloud" that round i t swi m ; While farther down The bare cliff¡ frown, Granite and lichened, sere and brown. As in a boat,

I seem to float Around those purple peaks remote, Where in the dells, The legend tell", Among tbe clouds Pamoh1. dwells. We camped to-day Beneath thy sway, Whose mandates e'en the rocks obey; And at thy gate We calmly wait Thy smile or frown, oar patron Fate ! Ai thy stem oall These gray m i ts fall, And shroud the summit in their pall: Thy ligbte t breath

Dispells the wreath, .And san et gilds the peaks beneath. Their crimson glow Falls far below, And dims the shadow tall pines throw: What nobler tongue Has ever sung Y

What grander anthem ever rang? With sweet accord They sound abroad The majesty and strength of God; I fancy even

Through them is given A way that windeth up to Heaven.

HE F al l Term of 1877 opened with an unusual number of students in attend ance.

The Fresh-

man Class was the lar gest that had entered

years.

for

Of the fifty catalogued, forty-ei ght appeared at the usual place, No. 6 Cllampliu Hal l, and per

for med tb e accustomed chiro grapb i c exercise.

" Re

form " was the motto instantaneously adopted by '81. Tl.le classic balls of learnin g, which had proved so ample for her predecessors, were found far too l imited an area for '81 properly to display her wisdom, and the Faculty, catch i n g the spir it of her motto, soon bad them enlarged to their pres ent di mensions. Owin g to our superiority in numbers, onr Freshman Year ebbed away very quietly with a dai ly routine of Latin, Greek, and Mathe matics, weekly lectures, and that bane of a Freshman's l ife, the Monday m orn i ng recitation.

Tl.le chief event of the year, and

the first of our many reformatory introductions, was a rope-pull between '80 and '81, which occurred soon after the open i n g of the Fall Term.

In

consideration of the broad numerical d iffer

ence between the two classes, we foi·bear to g ive any account of the harrowing scene; suffice it to say that a neat medal was presented by '78 to

'

81

in commemoration of her vi ctory.

As a

second variation in a somewhat monotonous programme, we de cided to have no Freshman Exit, and shared the common fate of all who have ever been prudent beyond their fellows.

As we assembled on the first mornin g of our.'opbomore -24-

und ou.-sel ves reduced to fo.-ty-fou.-, but with this I..-g,..esi

d ue we pursued the cveu tenor of our way.

A somewhat surpris

ing event took place in the early part of the year: a

opbornore

Fresbmau reception was given at the bou e of the President, where

'

1 very amicably entertained

'82.

Just as amicable, but

perhaps not as agreeable was the friendly meeting one morning after prayers, when a large Freshman having the effrontery to

'81

sport a large cane,

took exception to the procedure and dis

tributed the relics among lier members. From a j ust regard for the self- complacency so proudly attained by us, we were now permitted to substitute an easier study in place of one of our cl assics, and were thus enabled to devote more of our attention to the investigation of Nature ,, human

an d otherwise."

Durin(l' the summer we rendered

efficient and valuable aid to our

Alma Mater, all

the more valu

able becau e gratuitou , i n making a careful survey (with the as i tance of the Profe .it about thi

time we recei,ed an u n i n tentional gratuity.

Prex was suddenly called away on the morning of June

The

th, and,

this not being the first morning of the term, the Profs. cut, as usual, hence prayers i n the chapel were omitted for the first time in the history of the in titution . A fourth nornlty was intToduced during this year

he again vetoed an exit, and again she endured, with

her characteristic fortitude, the jeers of disapprobation. The Junior year opened with forty-one members, and a n ew field of research was di co,·erecl to our wondering gaze in the natural sciences.

A room having been recently fitted up for

laboratory work , n ine took

the

special

course in Chemistry

and rapidly de,e!oped a rare talent for the production of explo sive gases.

After careful re earch into the realms of Physiology,

after much long-continued and nu tiring labor, we were at length enabled to place beyond the shadow of a rational doubt the fact that' Mrs. A. undoubtedly saw what she said she saw."

In

Geol

ogy the cla s took an un usual in terest, winning the approbation of their instructor, and obtaining more than the ordinary al low ance of excursions.

In o u r visit to the "Devil's Chair," how

ever, we were sadly deceived.

Instead of bowling smoothly

along the traditional downward road with the broad gate, wllich atanic Majesty's Dominions, we were all well leads to his -25-

much

to all rules laid dmrn, and unmindfu l of their own interests, take for their ti m e of practice only pleasant e venings.

It

may be au

advantage to row at such t i me, as to avoidi ng the beat of the day, but w e feel confide n t that the i l l success " hich attended their races la t year at Lake Marauocook and the Thames was due only to their t i m e of trai ning.

The crew is i n fair condit.ion

The following selections have been made, with the greatest care, from the best literature of the day. that this gratuitous means of cultur

It is earnestly hoped

will be fully improved by

the reading public.

The following beautiful poem wa original1y written a n part of " Hiawatha," bnt owing lo numerous cla s.ical allusions and several slight defects in meter, Mr. Longfellow would not permit its publication. It now appears for the 11rst time in print. In the l au d of southern college, iu the upper topmost story, Dwelt in years agone a Fresbmau, dwel t a fair and rnrdant Freshman, Tall and slender, meek aud geutle, swift and agile as the roebuck,

Cared b e not for beast or de>il, big or little, straight or crooked. So bis slumbers ne'er were broken by the horn's melodious clatter, By the calls for blood and Freshman nor the fierce requests for " more beef" ; But his pensive, sad demeanor drew to him, " Ala , poor Yorick," The attention of a people whose delibt i t i s to torture Such as, being young and tender, know not of the world's harsh conflict. They, i n secret conclave 'sembled, hear reports from their com mittees I n regard to the condition of their wards, the Freshantbropoi. And when called o n for our hero, tbu, the chairman bad responded : ' ' Seems to be in fair condition, yet to bring to full perfection Needs a copious irrigation. '

Voted, That the brother have i t. •

'Twas 11. night in chill October, resting on his couch was Yorick, Wrapped in deep and pleasing slumber, little dreaming of disaster.

A e h e lay thus calm reposing, suddenly he hears a rustling ;

K

- 85 -

Bolt upright he sits and, list'o iog, hark ! a rush-a cry and tableau

Yorick, in a single garment, borne amid a crowd of ruffians

Down the dark and winding stairway, to the college irrigator.

Thon the co.Im of night was broken by the sound of bubbling water Bursting i n refreshing showers oo the Fre bantbropic co.put.

Once again .Aurora, :flying just before the Sun's bright chariot,

Gazing down on things terrestrial, secs a joyous, wild commotion, Caused by kind permis ion given to the generous irrigators

To absent them elves from studios, as reward for service rendered.

And the H20 inducer likewise was excused from duty

For the most substantial reason that 'twas "particeps criminis."

Come, let up your noise and I'll tell you a tale TbaL will make ernry bone in your body turn pale; For the smell of the battle will be i u the air, And you'll sure be reminded of Donnybrook Fair. Ia the cold, win try gray o f a morning i n spring, While sore-throated robins were trying to sing, .A terrible racket from slumber did cal l The ornrworked student' of old Chaplin Hal l ; And boys al l regardle's of comf'table beds, With much blinking eye

and much rumpled beads,

I n very light costume, appeared o n the scene

'ro ask what this terrible tumult could mean. For the ball it was fi J led with a

trngaliug crowd

And curse · resounded fall deeply and loud, Aud the flash of

billalies was seen i n the air,

Through a haze of

birt collars, boot', blood, dust, aud hair.

Aud various geutlemen seized for the throats O f various small boys without any coats, Aud

lammed 'em around on the floor and the wall,

Which iujnred completely the looks of th e b al l ; Aud wbitc-lirnred young·ters a· fierce at i t went .A s vet'ran " pl ug uglies " ( ee Waterville Sent.). A n d while thus the clamor did loudly re'ound

Upro e from a. corner the most Doe-lful sound, And a scrap of a boy, with bis face to the floor, Adm itted qu ite freely be wauted no more. And so i t went on, i n .uch artistic way, That no one i n blame could a single word say ! But why they hould fight with no object in ;iew Well-nobody answered, for uobody k uew,

No one seemed to know, n o one seemed t o care ; 'Twas a second editiou of Donnybrook Fair. -From '' New Idyls of tlte King," by A. Ten nyson.

C H APTE R C XXXIV. The Baron makes a speech to the assembly, and drives 01t all the mem,_ bers ;

routs the yaggers and the man eaters, and wins the day.

Passing through the town on my way from the P. 0., I was informed

by a messenger arri\ing i n post-baste, that several of the nobility bad been depri'red of the honors and i m munities especially belonging to us

gentlemen.

I beard of their sufferings with much feeling, and swore to

avenge every blow with which they had beeu insulted.

I went to the den

of these .A.ntbropopbagi, assembled to exult and discu s. and very grace fully putting my cane to my lips, " I swear," cried I, " by the revered

bead of my cane, that if you do not instantly make redress for your

many and cruel insults upon us, I will beat the one hal f-of you to pieces."

On which, their President, taking op a huge dumb-bel l, flung i t at

my head.

I stooped to avoid the blow (this mass of irou cru bed

through the side of the buildi ng and sunk, with a dull thud, twenty

feet into the earth), and, ru bing to the front, seized the speaker, who was ful minating against the nobles, and taking the villain by one leg,

after swinging him several times round my head, flung him at the Pres ident.

I laid about me most no1'ly (for I had taken lessons in fencing

and !)oxing three whole days when I was younger), drove them al l out of the room, and locking the door put the key i n ray pocket.

Upon going out I perceived a party of the same, who bad rallied,

and a vast number of yaggers, ad 11aucing againElt me. and went t o meet them.

I drew my cane

Three hundred yaggers came hallooing and

warring against me l i ke so many furies.

I scorned to use my cane, but

seized the first that came Dp, alld mak ing him kneel down, I took away his club, which so terrified the rest that they al l set up a yell and ran

away as fa t as they could, through fear of me.

As to the rest I soon

put them to flight, after having made prisoners of some of them, thus gaining the day.
