Preface The 3 9th vol u m e of our College Ann ual, The Colby Oracle, i ready for the press. We trust and hope that this olume will, e en better than i ts predecessors, represent the t ru e type of u ndergrad uate l ife at Col by and the ever increasing love and devotion which we ha e for our A l m a Mater. It has been our aim to produce an annual wh ich would contain an accurate idea of the activities and the spirit of s tudent l ife and wh ich would be of interest to all , whether student, alumnus or friend . The changes m ade this year have been only those which in our arefu l estimation are for the best. This year has seen the Oracle Association become m ore definitely organized than formerly. We bel ieve that this is surely an indication of the progress in our college acti ities wh ich are bound to keep pace with the College itsel f. But t o go back t o the beginning, have we succeeded in our aim ? Perhaps not . Some worthy m aterial may ha e been left out, some j ke m ay h i t a little too hard . H owever, all we ask is that you ' i l l giv credit where it is d ue, and feeling sure that y ur c riticism will at lea t be of val ue to our successors we submit with grateful heart the re ult of our lab rs .

the year 1 904, when King Autumn was t urning the green of the lea e to beautiful tints of crim son and gold, when old Colby was once more opening her doors to the troops of incoming students a ne'V dignity ettled upon th women of 1 907. They had become Sophomores. D i tinguished for capabil ity for talent, for schol arship and for their achievement during the pre,·ions year, they "·ere indeed well fi t ted to assume the new d utie and re pon ibilitie before them . In their early college history a friend ( ? ) kno" n as 1 906 took great intere. t in their affairs and showed them much attention. H owever, peedily learning college cu toms, they soon a!' erted t hemsel es and quenched all friendly ( ? ) enthu ia m for their improYement . Tho e were the days of many " pread " and m uch m errymaking, especially on Friday evening , when, for a brief time, Mathematic ceased to t roubl e . At length, they made a feast for their brethren, and by m uch dancing t ran gre secl the law. From thi time on their ban1lers alway wa eel in victory, and prosperity increa eel until the end of the ear, and a ride to orth Belgrade brought them a m ore complete liberty . With the coming o f another ) e a r graver care t h a n they h a d y e t known began to r e t upon them . The number of their feast ings grew le , and d iligently did they apply them elYes. Phy ics the l ion of their e pecial d read, was bra el attacked ; yard of Daily Theme were written ; German erbs were con quered · and lastly, 1 908 found them ready to ad i e and correc t . \;\Tit h the cheerfulne s and courage characteri tic of them, ha e they undertaken all the e duties, especially the last named, h oping that " fidelity to a righ teou cause ' " ould fi nally be re\ ardecl in successors worthy of filling their honored place . Thu l iving in the consciou ness of " du t ie well performed " in atisfa tion with their numerous s uccesses do they look forward with eagernes to the j oy of en tering into that land of eas t he J un ior Year.

fall of nineteen h undred and four M other Colby adopted into I Nherthealready large family of girls fi fty-two l usty young babes . These

new arrivals were received with open arms by their older sisters and were tenderly cared for by the Sophomores, whose special charges they becam e . For the fi rst few days they were very docile, doing j ust as they were told ; but oon, seeing that they o utnumbered the Sopho mores by more than two to one, they grew bold and h eadstrong. The fi rst evidence of this was shown in their flaunting of their class colors at the h orn rush and ball game and their immodest actions after the game , when they flocked to greet t heir broth ers and adorned them with t h ese colors . But their triumph was destined t o be short-lived, for that very day these bits of baby ribbon mysteriously disappearerl . I n the evening they received a visit from t h eir Sophomore sisters, by whom they were summarily dealt with . Some of them took their p un ishment quietly ; others were so terrified hat they went into hysterics, but one and all displayed their various talents and d uly swore allegiance to 1 907 . Next , advised and assisted by all their aunts and uncles and offi c ious friends, som e of t hem succeeded in having a peanut drunk . This affair caused them a good deal of t rouble for they were kept busy with broom and du stpan tor a week afterwards, sweeping up peanut shells in their own and the Sophomores' rooms . Later they gave a reception t o their brothers, for whom t hey had so openly m an ifested their affection at the very fi rst . G u arded as they were by rows of policemen, t hey felt secure, and spent the time in dancing until the Dean and the other chaperones arrived, after wh ich t hey had to content themselves with less exciting amusement s . We trust that they enjoyed the compa ny of those of their brothers who were present even t hough the class president and certain others were ' unavoidably detained and had t o send in their regrets. A t the H allowe'en party given by the Sophomores to thei r baby sisters, t h e latter learned that wickedness never goes long unpunished, and they sorely repented of their evil way s . After having been initiated into the mysteries of Phi Chi, they greatly enj oyed the games

and r freshments suited to young childhood, and which the ophomores o kindly furni hed them . in e then the Fresh man class has been somewhat d im in ished by some of its mem bers having gone home to their mam mas, unable longer to endure the separation i n spite of our tender care. But tho e who still remain are beginn ing to realize that it is for their own good to recognize the superiority f the Sophomores and to subm it to our authority . We can ay with j ustice that they are the most easy-going and least t roublesome class that has ever entered o l by . I f they con tinue to profit by our exam ple and advice and learn a little self-reliance, we have some hopes that by the end of the year they will be ready to pu t away childish t hings and will be fi t ted to assume the cares and duties of Sophomores .
