WILLIAM R. COTTER
The class of 1983 and the Cotters were both freshmen in the fall of 1979. At the inauguration that September, I set forth the goals of a liberal education: "Our general mission is clear, to aid students search for a viable self-identity. A liberal education should free each to find and fulfill his or her unique potential. In the process we hope students will become more tolerant of diversity and more compassion ate toward others, able to distinguish fact from opinion, intellectually curious and aesthetically awarei able to syn thesize as well as to analyze, broadly educated with depth in some area, able to create and enjoy opportunities for lifelong learning, useful to society and happy with them selves." Life at Colby has changed over the past four years thanks, in many instances, to student initiative - and
most of the new efforts relate to these goals for individual growth. The completion of the Heights (designed to re flect student preference for dormitory arrangements) helped relieve the overcrowding which greeted you in 1979, and this summer we will do a complete renovation of Averill and Johnson, the beginning of a decade-long pro gram to modernize all of our older dormitories. You have led efforts to diversify your social life and have estab lished a Residential Life Council, the Better Alcohol Re sponsibility Committee, the new Coffee House and an e panded winter sports program. The fraternities them selves have begun to live with the Fraternity Guidelines and many campus groups are now preparing to participate in the comprehensive study of residential and social life to be undertaken by the recently established Trustees Com mission. The faculty spend increasing amounts of time with stu dents in informal and extracurricular settings even though first-rate teaching remains their primary task. The new facuity apartments on campus, the faculty forums, the faculty affiliates program and expanded student-faculty dining opportunities are all designed to increase that friendly interaction. The academic program also changed during your four years. The January Program was revised. new programs were introduced in anthropology, black studies and com puter sciences and the college embarked on an ambitious program to move toward universal computer literacy. In addition to those new computer facilities, the science program has been strengthened by the addition of elec tron microscopes, and we all have lived with the pain and joy associated with the expansion and total renovation of the library. I am only sorry that members of the class of 1983 - who have had to put up with all of the construction and inconvenience (including no showers in the Ouad when blasting for the library foundation ruptured water mains) - will not be here next fall to enjoy the spacious completed building. So much for the past four years - what of the future? You will find when you leave Colby that you are well prepared, both for graduate school and the world of work. Spurred by the recommendations of students and the Overseers Visiting Committee, our Career Services Of fice has been substantially expanded and the job market for liberal arts graduates - regardless of major - contin ues to be strong even in the current economic recession. Colby's 1980 Conference on Business and Liberal Arts, as well as a recent Bell Telephone Study, confirm that suc cess rates within major corporations are greater for those who majored in humanities and social sciences than those who specialized in narrower fields such as business ad ministration or engineerinR. Good luck to every member of the class of 19831 Come back and see us often. This is your college and a warm welcome will always be waiting for you here. - William R. Cotter President Colby College

COMMENCEMENT
202
May 22, 1983
My third piece of advice calls for the rejection of what cartoonist Garry Trudeau calls the "way-sta tion mentality:" the feeling that who you are is defined not by where you are now, but by where you are going. We must not be so obsessed with the future. with self-advance ment, that we neglect the present. It is a difficult obsession to avoid. The question we have all been asked most frequently during the past year is: "What's up for next year? What are you going to do with the rest of your life?" We are tempted to rush ourselves, but we should not. No doubt, to put inadequate thought into the future would be imprudent and potentially tragic. But to em phasize where you are going too heavily over where you are now can be equally counterproductive. for it can rob us of our sense of purpose, and narrow our vision of the world and our role within it. Lastly, I advise that we never re duce our personal growth to a drive for "marketability." The recent trend on college campuses has been toward technical, professionally oriented training. in short, toward marketability. Many of our peers have sold out - they have done whatever they deemed necessary to get the job which will provide them with the high standard of liv ing which they have come to ex pect. They have made themselves marketable. A common criticism of a liberal arts education is that it leaves many of its students with no real market able skill. But some educators, like our own President Cotter, have ar gued that liberal arts graduates are (continued on page JOlj)
203
(continued from page .203) also Marketable, and perhaps more so, because we are well-rounded and well-educated, we can ap proach a variety of situations with creativity and adapt readily to change. Personally, I loathe the word marketable in describing hu man beings. It should be reserved for descriptions of laundry deter gents and toothpastes. We should not follow those who place the almighty dollar above their own freedom to choose. We should not allow the inquisitive spir it which has been cultivated within us here at Colby to be overwhelmed by the acquisitive spirit that is cul tivated outside. In closing, I'd like to share with you all the following passage which I read recently in an unlikely source - Newsweek Magazine. There are several names listed after the arti cle, so it is unclear exactly who wrote this particular segment, but it is something which I wish I had written myself, and about which we can all think: "And so, heads high, smiling confi dently but not excessively, clear of eye and purpose, the marketable generation rises to meet its future, asking only that it be allowed to buy what it wants. Time enough to dis cover that being able to buy what they want is just another form of enslavement, as the generation of the 1960's has only recently discov ered about being able to do what ever they want. With luck, a few o'f today's students will discover the secret of true freedom, which is to be whatever they want. -Class speaker Steven S. Nicholas
