Colby College Mayflower Hill Drive Waterville, Maine 04901

To the Class of '89: You were the largest graduating class in Colby's history and although quantity does not always indicate quality, in your case it clearly did. I hope you take pride in the changes you have helped make possible while you were at Colby. You revised the Commons governance system, which resulted in the larg est participation in student elections in memory; reasserted the values of free speech and free choice during the CIA debate; encouraged the College to divest completely its South African share holdings; and led vigorous and productive discussions this last spring on ways to strengthen racial understanding and to confront issues of gender dis crimination. Of course, we have not solved all these problems. Indeed the challenge to obtain a more diverse student body, fac ulty and staff will be with us for years and we must always remain vigilant in defense of freedom of expression be cause there are so frequently those on both the left and the right who would like us to curtail speech in order to promote some perceived higher goal. As alumni, you will need to continue to be constructive critics of the College but I hope also, supporters of those aspects which you find positive and important. Also, please help us identify those special young men and women in your new communities, particularly members of minority groups, who ought to populate our student body in the 1990s. Finally, don't forget my Baccalaureate advice: Take chances and don't ever settle into a rut; join the public library; take a good book with you when you travel; and keep in touch.

Cordially,·

To the Class of 1989:

Tony Corrado

When told that she must travel to the Emerald City to visit the wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy wondered how she should begin. Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, offered a sound bit of advice: "It's always best to start at the beginning." Most of you arrived at Colby in September 1985, preparing to embark on a four year journey. If your per ceptions were similar to mine when I entered col lege, four years seemed like a very long time. Al most forever. I arrived at Colby in February (unfortunately I did not spend the fall in Mexico or France) as a one semester replacement in the Gov ernment Department, looking forward to four months of teaching. Four months seemed like a very short time. Now you are leaving and I am staying. I do so in large part because of the help you have given me. Your challenges, interests, and concerns have taught me much about myself and my profession. For this I will always be grateful. Like the Wizard of Oz, I have no magic words. And I am not about to send you in search of a broomstick. But you might consider some of the wisdom of the advertising wizards of Madison Av enue as you embark on your next journey. Be All You Can Be: Continue to develop your selves in every possible way. Pursue new expe riences and continue to learn from old ones. Learn to enjoy the fullness of life and keep yourselves open to new possibilities. Just Do It: Too often we sit around and discuss what we would like to do "someday" or consider ideas and never pursue them. Whether an am bitious plan or simple pleasure, make the com mitment to carry it out. Time has a way of passing quickly. Feel the Heartbeat of America: We live in a large and diverse nation. Our geography, people, lifes tyles, and culture are remarkably different from one area of the country to another. Take the time to recognize this in your travels. Learn to appreciate these differences so that you might better under stand what we have in common. Remember that your college years are not an isolated period of time. Keep in touch with your classmates and instructors so as to build on what you have begun. After all, since we have shared the last four years together, there is now a little Kansas in all of us.

T<;> bE7 aked to te c;x dedication to a graduating class is an mvitation that is sunultaneously honorific and fright ening. It is honorific in that it suggests some members of the lass were willill:g to have me address them; it is frightening msofar as what IS there left to say, what can be said that is paramount enough to occupy a place in your yearbook? Over the years I have casually kept track of the number of graduating seniors who have shared a class with me. On the average, it is about one third of the class. In the last half dozen or so years this percentage is less. Observing you in my classes, it is hard for me to believe that anything we've shared, that anything I've said can in even the slightest way be of significance to you in future years; when you're out there in the real world. To me, Colby is my real world. While it is my real world, it is not yours, ergo the task of bidding you farewell and writing some gems of wisdom to take with you into that real world is truly frightening and perhaps even futile. With all due respect, I can think of no better words of wisdom and guidance than words already formulated. I do not think I could write anything tha! will serve you so well and do justice to the import of your mvitation to me. Thus, I offer to you the admonitions contained in a little statement entitled Desiderata . In all sincerity and humility, I deem this the best and the most honestly caring advice one human being can offer to another. So then, as my paean to you, the class of '89, I offer you the following copy of the Desiderata with the hope that some day you will sit quietly and reflect on the majesty of what it conveys. Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise & haste, & remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly & clearly; and listen to others, even the dull & ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud & ag gressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourseH with others, you may become vain & bitter; for always there will be greater & lesser persons than yourseH. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however hum ble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs,· for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourseH. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity & disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surren dering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you from sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourseH with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourseH. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees & the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors & as pirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Having provided you with the above, I think that ad ditional remarks would be redundant and lessen the im pact of what I am attempting to share with you. This is my final year at Colby as a full time faculty member. Therefore we share in common the termination of a college career. From one whose termination is the end of a career to all of you whose termination is but the start of a career may I offer you sincerest and warmest wishes for fulfillment, whatever your chosen endeavors may be. One last word of advice. As you engage that exciting, problematic and pulsating world of the rest of your life, remember what Colby has given you. Be wise and be critical. Above all be temperate. In the words of Gibran; "Do not tell me you have found the truth, tell me you have found a truth." Good luck and best wishes to each and every one of the members of the Class of '891

Since the class of 1989 entered in the fall of 1985, a Student Center rs been built; Mary Low Commons has been renovated; a Nautilis om has been added to the field house; and, computers have •come the norm. Your class has experienced the addition of the >lunteer Center, a reduction in classload, the growth of the Colby 5exual. Lesbian, and Gay Community, and the purchase of the ctron microscope.

And your class has struggled through the CIA discussions, issues race on a predominantly white campus, lack of multiculturalism in 1ur "outside of the classroom experiences," the building of the >mmons System, the issue of the growth of underground fraternities nd subsequent dissolution of two of the grous); and, the homeless . the streets of Waterville, Maine - yes, even here in Waterville. >U too have struggled with the issues that define the world outside Colby: a growing world-wide economic crisis; the dilemma of .clear power and waste; a n ecological threat that is so great that it beyond comprehension; a famished third world, and, the threat of u on a planet that could easily destroy istelf with its arsenals. :my of these issues will be a part of the world that you face as you :xve Colby - it is o n that world, and your role within it, that I would e to focus.

What choices will you make as you leave Colby? Will you continue . in school. choose a significant other with whom to live, travel, end a year or two volunteering, and/or get a job? The choice of the xt step in your life is important - a choice that many of you are ::using on with excitement and fear. It is a significant choice, one uch will shape your next choices in life.

Joyce McPlietres-Maise(

However, it is not the most important of the choices you will make as you begin to live your life away from Colby. The far more important question is how you will live your life. Will you commit yourself to the betterment of society? Will you be involved in ecological issues that face our planet? Will you give of your time and energy to those less fortunate than you? If you have children, will you commit the time nec essary to raising them in this world in which professional life takes its toll on many a family? Will you remember the time that you were down when you have the chance to assist another significantly? Will you follow your conscience even when no one is looking? Will you define in your life the need to search for truth, despite the fact that it is not always pretty (and do so with humility and understanding for those who have made mistakes, and are trying to change)? Will you come to understand that to judge others without caring and self-reflection is merely a way to raise yourself up artificially in others' pain and misforutne? Can you be humble in suc cess or optimistic in failure? The way in which you face the life ahead of you, and the actions that you take will constitute your "gesture" to the world. Nadine Gordimer, in her new book The Essential Gesture relates her hope for the world in an individuals' "courage-in-spite-of." Gordimer writes that she and others who possess a skill with words have a responsibility despite possible censorship and jail - to write of the in justices that they witness. Like writers, you who are blessed with an education like that which Colby provides, have a responsibility to do more than remain passive throughout your lives - a passivity, in and of itself, defines a "gesture" to the world. In our world, education provides a freedom, and a responsibility. Because of your years and quality of education, your life will be filled with both opportunity and decision. Opportunity to impact, decisions that force you to evaluate your ethical behavior and actions repeatedly. You will make mistakes. But, you must recover because it is you and those like you who will be involved in the changes that will bring us to the next decade and shape the world that many generations will experience. The 90's present a very significant opportunity for our world to evaluate the past century and plan for the next. It is a time when forgiveness is given for mistakes of the past, for there is the understanding that without the chance for forgiveness, corrections and new goals are unattainable. In this decade of the 90's, you must open your thoughts to new possibilities. Broadened thinking - that which is in clusive rather than exclusive - is necessary to advance our society and the various cultures of the world. For too long we have attempted to define out, rather than define in, people, nations, thoughts, and actions, of those who are different. As we all share one planet, and many natural resources, we must learn to find understanding in and compassion for all that is different. I am not asking you to put aside your liberal or conservative preference, but rather to understand that the problems that face our nations cannot be solved through the strict interpretation of any one political or religious thought - just as no one human problem can be solved through proscribed methods that do not allow for differences. Your challenge is not a small one. You will often be confronted with dilemmas which reach to your very soul, to the very essence of your existence. These dilemmas are oftentimes found in situations in which values of seemingly equal importance conflict. The dilemmas may help you to understand that you must speak out when it is not easy, to take a stand which may seem disloyal, and to persist, in the face of adversity, with integrity and compassion Gordimer's "courage-in-spite-of." Who prepared us for these dilemmas? Who, or what, will be our conscience?

As you live your life, I hope that you will continue to grow towards the understanding of others' hopes, dreams, and needs, while examining and defining those that are im portant to you. I pray that your "gesture" in the world will be one which brings this world forward to a more peaceful existence.

There were many season highlights: big wins over Plymouth, Bates, and Bowdoin; first time ever being ranked in New England; five shutouts in a row; and some of the best team play ever by a Colby field hockey team. New team records were set: senior goal-keeper broke the record of fewest goals allowed in a season with 7 a major accom plishment. Junior Jodie Brown tied the record for most interceptions/tackles by an offensive play er with 84. -

T he fall of 1988 marked the resurgence of

Colby football as the White Mules, led by co-captains Andy Ayers and Dan Valeri, won the CBB Championship on their way to completing the best win-loss record this decade. A group of six very committed seni ors depart, leaving behind the most mean ingful gift to any program - the legacy of winning. As a team, Colby did not allow a touchdown in either of their CBB contests and finished tenth in the Final ECAC Di vision III poll. Three players were selected to the All-NESCAC team: Dan Valeri, Guy Prescott and junior Joe Vecchi.

For both Jill Volleweiler i Karen Boomer, earning All American status was very dal. Overall, the women harriers won the CBB meet. ned third place at NESCAC's, fourth at states. fourth at A.C's, and second at the New England Division III Cham nship by outscoring Bates by one point. he Women's Basketball team finished the season with a record of 3-19. However, this record is not entirely indicative of the strong efforts put forth by the women. Colby was led by juniors Clare DeAngelis, Maeve Costin, Jen Lally and Debbie Adams with able support from sophomore Kim Derrington. Adams and Der rington were the leading scorers (averaging 14 points per game) while DeAngelis chipped in with 8 points and an important floor game. The highlight of the year came on February 11 when the women hosted Husson College (23-1) in a televised effort before more than 2000 fans. In a hotly contested game, the Mules trailed by only two points with 30 seconds remaining before an unfortunate turnover led to a win by the Braves. However this near-miss against a nationally ranked team was a big night for Women's Basketball. During the season, Colby played nine of the top ten teams in New England in a schedule that included only two teams under .500 - a true test of character!

1988-89 Men's Squash Team had the finest T he season in Colby's squash history. The team com

piled an overall record of 15-9, finishing nineteenth overall in the nation. Led by Senior Captain Rob Schwandt, and Seniors Dave Longcope, Jeff Smith, and Ogden Timpson, Colby's Men's Squash Team was the recipient of the Jack Barnaby Trophy, awarded to the nation's Most Improved Team. The team defeated Bates and historically powerful Bowdoin on numerous occasions, had big wins over M.I.T., George Washington, and Army, and was competitive with some of the best teams in the nation. Although the team is losing its top four players, and this year's Most Improved Player Shaun Dakin, the top spots will be replaced by what was this year, the heart of the ladder. The key returning players will ensure that Colby Squash will remain strong for years to come.

w 0 M E N' s The 1988-1989 Women's Squash

team was a strong unified group. Many of this season's ex citing matches remained unde cided until the final game. The team's strengths came from its veterans, two of whom were Lau ra Thornton and Jen Pierce, strong dedlc ed s eniors and also newcomers. Freshmen Mar ggret I and Meredith Johnson added to the depth of the team by playing # 1 and #2, respectively. The squash team finished out the season well by ranking seven teenth in the country, ahead of both Bates and Bowdoin.

he Colby Men's Hockey team bounced back in February and barely missed the playoffs. There were only seven teams chosen for the ECAC playoffs, and it was felt that Colby would have been the eighth. The final record was 9- 1 1-3, but in the last two weeks of the season, the Mules had impressive wins over nationally ranked Hamilton, Babson and tied Union. With eight freshmen playing on a regular basis, including goaltender Eric Turner, the team made great strides in rebuilding the hockey tradition in Waterville. The team had a record seven overtime games in which they were 2-2-3. The inexperience showed up at times, but the enthusiasm and unselfish play of the team made this season a success.

Colby College Men's Lacrosse team started the season with a suc cessful spring break trip to San Diego. Only one loss in California indicated that the team was off to a great start, but Colby's New England schedule was not going to be as easy. The Mules lost four of the first six games, and the playoff picture looked any thing but promising. However, the team worn its final three games against Bates, Babson and New Eng land Collge to get into the tourney to a rematch with undefeated Bowdoin. Even though the White Mules lost, Coach Pfeiffer stated that "it was a great year." The team finished the reg ular season at 1 0-5. Key players in cluded senior attackman Kevin Plum mer (a 1989 Division III All-American honorable mention who racked up 39 goals and 1 3 assists), sophomore at tacbnan P J Perroni (22 goals and a team-high 24 assists) and sophomore midfielder Eric Russman ( 1 7 goals and 22 assists). .

Sophomore Todd O'Connor was the leading hitter, while sophomores Mike McRea, Brian Garvey and Steve Marshall each had two pitching wins The highlight of the year came early in the season at Florida's "Boardwalk and Baseball" as jun ior Jay Olson struck out fifteen Wil liams Ephmen en route to a 4- 1 complete game victory in which he gave up only two hits and the Mules played errorless behind him. The lady white mules jumped right into the season h no pre-season games or scrimmages. The team was 1 -7 after the first half of the season. Their mainstay s pitcher Jayne Holman who kept them in every game and had an ERA of 1 .49. Great team improvement :uacterized the next eight games as players adjusted to new positions. wo new class records and an individual NESCAC champion highlighted the 1 989 spring Track and Field T season. Joe Tamburini improved upon the 2 1 year old record held by Michael Salvetti as he pushed the

freshman hammer throw record out to 1 37 '9.5". Senior Doug St. Lawrence improved upon Chris Balsley's 22 year old senior intermediate hurdle mark. Doug ran his personal best of 57 .44 in the last race of his Colby career at the N.E. Division III Championships to establish the new senior mark. Sophomore Dave Donnelly ran down the leaders in the 1 0, 000 meter run at the NESCAC championships to capture the event in 32:2 1 :59. Doug's leadership and athletic prowess will be greatly missed on Colby's 1 990 Track and Field team. Joe and Dave, however, have demonstrated the outstanding young talent that does exist on this year's team and the promise of exciting seasons to come in Track and Field at Colby.

Editor's Notes: The l 1 9th edition of the Oracle, the oldest student publication on campus, was the result of intense dedication by a relatively few number of people. Although distinctive titles were given, we worked as an interdependent whole in which this yearbook would not have been produced otherwise. We hope this yearbook has captured the memories of this past year. I know that doing this yearbook gave me a different perspective of "a year at Colby." Besides thanking all those that are mentioned above, I would like to thank all those that effected this yearbook in their own special ways. A big thanks to John Farkas and Trudy King who were always there for me. Much gratitude is given to Mary Ellen in Public Affairs for helping me replace those photos that somehow never got taken or were lost. But somehow Cole Harris and Steve Law of Taylor Publishing get a standing ovation. Their patience and ideas could never be surpassed. I have enjoyed working with you over the years and will miss you. To all those reading this, whether you are seniors, underclassmen, or professors, I wish you all good luck in life. Thank you for all that you have given me. Whether directly or indirectly each of you have influenced my life. Take Care Lara
