To laugh is to risk appearing a fool. To weep is to risk being called sentimental. To reach out to another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk showing your true self. To Place your ideas and dreams before the crowd is to risk being called naive.

To live is to risk dying. To hope is to risk despair. To try is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken, because the greatest risk in life is to ris'k nothing. The people who risk nothing do nothing, have nothing, are nothing, and become nothing. They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they simply cannot learn to feel and change and grow and love and live. Chained by their servitude, they are slaves; they've for feited their freedom. Only people who risk are truly free.

Office of the President

phone 207-872-3211 fax 207-872-3280

February

10, 2000

To the Class of 2000:

I was so pleased when Heather Daur and Matt Todesca asked me if I would write a I was more than happy

short message to the Class of 2000 for inclusion in your yearbook.

to do so, especially since they surprised me early in the fall by making me an honorary member of this special class! You have seen a number of changes during your four years at Colby-particularly in residential life-and so many of you have helped to provide the crucial student input to be sure that the new dormitory and dining hall projects-including the construction of Anthony-Mitchell-Schupf, and the Harold and Bibby Alfond Residence Complex, as well as all the renovations-reflected student priorities.

During your senior year, we began to see

the fruits of that planning and the disruptive construction which you have endured every year during your time at Colby. The athletic teams have had exceptionally successful records during your years at the College, and your contributions to music, art, publications, clubs, and the performing arts have, it seems to me, gotten more exciting each year.

The Echo, after 100 years as a tabloid,

became a broad-sheet paper, and the radio station, having lost its license, quickly regained it and was back on the air soon after the beginning of your senior year. The Student Government Association has struggled with a number of difficult issues, and their suggestions have clearly contributed to a much stronger campus consensus. Many of you are also serving as student representatives to the Trustee planning process which will help to refine the options available to Colby to be an even stronger college by the end of this new decade. You have helped to select and to welcome Bro Adams and Cathy Bruce while they are getting to know the campus, prior to Bro's assuming the Colby

presidency on July 1, 2000.

I know they are grateful for the support of the Class of 2000

and are eager to join the Colby community next summer. Mrs. Cotter and I have gotten to know a very large number of you over the years. She worked with you on internships, field experience, exchange programs, or study in Africa, and others of you have taken my class or served on various Trustee and College committees with us.

We are always inspired by the creativity and enthusiasm of the students with whom

we have had the privilege of working, including those in Piper where we have been Faculty Associates.

And, you all helped to stage the wonderful celebration of the completion of the Campaign for Colby where the alumni and other friends of the College raised $150 million to provide the kind of financial aid and faculty support-as well as needed new buildings-that position Colby well for this new century. We have enjoyed working with you, and we come away from each meeting or performance or athletic contest convinced that Colby students are the very best! We will be leaving Colby with you this spring, but I hope you will keep in touch with your alma mater in the years to come.

Best of luck-and do not forget to carry a good book!

e.. ca=::.Cordially,

Cotter

The Charles Bassett Senior Teaching Award Recipient It is a privilege to have been chosen by you to receive the Charles Bassett Senior Class Teaching Award. I can think of no higher honor than to receive this prize, named after the man who hired me, and who also spent the first two years of my stay at Colby calling me ''Tiger," for reasons that I still can't explain except that maybe he thought I was his nephew. It's also an honor to stand in the same line as other recipients of this award. Profes

sors Bryant, Weisbrot, Greenwood, LeFleur, and Osborn have all taught me a lot, particu

larly Bryant who, on one occasion, was the only other person in all of Waterville besides

myself attending a Thursday night showing at Hoyt's Cinema of "The Fly II. " How was the

film? Let's just say the English department was a little disappointed, although at one point

Professor Bryant screamed so loud he spilled his popcorn on the floor. People like me who tell stories for a living are fond of seeing lives as adventure stories and individuals as heroes on a quest. The four years you've spent at Colby form the "initia tion and trial" portion of your adventures, and I hope these rituals have helped you all find the courage you need to become yourselves. Now, having attained illumination, you head out into the world to slay dragons. I'm not much for advice but if I can tell you anything it's to be patient with yourselves. Sometimes it's hard to find a Dragon to slay. Sometimes the thing you have to slay isn't a dragon at all but something more subtle, complex, and invisible. You will be aided on your quest by your friends, your family, and (occasionally) by complete strangers. You will also be guided by the knowledge and insight you have gained here at Colby. With a little luck, you will surely become the heroes and heroines of the adventure of your own lives. It has been an honor and a pleasure serving as your teacher. Good luck, class of

2000. Sincerely, James Finney Boylan Associate Professor, English
