Football CBB Champions

The Mules coming off a dis appointing 4-4 eason i n 2002 and hav i ng multiple starters re turn i ng on offense and defense were fired up for a run at a championsh i p season in 2003 . The defense would have a very experienced (and rather handsome ) secondary return ing i ncluding Mike Civitello, Jeremy Jamieson , and senior Captain B randon I rw i n . The defensive l i ne , led by Greg Lynch and Peter S herman, and l inebackers led by senior Jimbo B radford would, de pite the loss of key players to gradua t i on, fil l the gaps quite n icely with some great athleticism, strength, speed, and vicious body hair. On the offensive side of the ball , t he Mule Train would return an All-American running back i n Aaron Stepka along ide the knowledgeable leadership of quarterback B .L. Lippert. A young and "hungry" but promising offen i ve

l i ne would certainly be capable of pushing around ome bod ies and free up some l anes for Stepka. The Mules would eventu ally lose the season opener to Trin ity, but come back strong to win the next two away games vs Middlebury and Wesleyan, attributable to strong defense and an i m pro v i n g offense. Amherst, the following week, put a halt to the two game win ning streak at the Mules home comi ng weekend that would then fuel t he Mule to win two more consecutive games v H am i lton and of course the annually annoying Bates Bobcats. Overall , the team saw key contributions from young players such as kicker John G o s s , l i n e b a c k e r M i ke K asperski , defen ive l ineman Conor Sull ivan, and receiver S teve Marchesich. The team has a bright and promising fu ture ahead of them . ( Irwi n )

Field l-lockey Nationally Ranked The Colby Field Hockey team has been continuously uccessful year b y year. This year i s no different. Led by co-cap t a i n s I nj oo Han and Brittney Lazar, the 2003 team returns eight of their eleven starters. Proving to be one of the program's most successful sea ons, their record is cur rently 8 -4, and are ranked 5th i n the NESCAC. One of the biggest accompl i shments thus far this season i s that they were nat ionall y ranked at n umber 1 9.

This is a first in Colby Field Hockey h i story. Wendy Bonner, returning All -Ameri can, once again proves to be a domi nant offensive threat as she is the leading goal scorer i n the NESCAC. Molly Rice, first year goalie, has also proven to be a force to be reckoned with. With a tight knit group of strong experienced players, they have capital ized on their i mpressive skil l and team ca maraderie to continue on the upward road to success. ( Han & Lazar)

Six Seniors Help Lead Team to Victory The Colby Hockey team enjoyed another s ucces ful season fi nishing up with an overall record of 14 - 7 - 4. After finishing the season in fourth place in a very tough NESCAC league, the M u l e s earned home ice for their quaterfinal game against Will iams. After beating W i l l iams 3 - 1 before a h uge crowd at Alfond Arena, they moved onto the final four at M iddlebury .

Paired up against Trinity, they l ost a tough game 4-2 to end their season . The team graduated ix eniors who will be sorely mis ed. However, with a strong nucleus coming back including NESCAC first team member Patrick Walsh and NESCAC econd team member Nick Bayley, the fu ture look promising. ( MacM i llan)

Sights Set High Women--They faced a diffi cult ta k thi spring a defend ing NCAA champion of Divi sion I I I Rowing. The crew et its sights on another national champion hip from early on in the year. Both the fal l head racing and the w inter training were ucce fu1 and prepared the crews as be t as pos ible for the spring racing. However, t h i s spring the compe t i t ion proved to be more of a chal lenge for the women than had been expected. The varsity women earned a 7lh place fi n ish at the New England Cham p ionship which qualified them for the ECAC Championship the fol lowing weekend. Dep i te the speed that was gained over the lat ter part of the eaon by both the varsity and JV women ' s crew , Colby fi n ished the eason with a 1 3 111

Men--Colby Men ' s Crew ha really developed over the years into a tronger and more com petitive team i n part to a greater development of the program as well a excellent coach ing. They rai ed the bar thi year by committing themselve to the needed extra training and conditioning which paid off this spri ng with a respectable record of 1 0-2. They were able to defeat pa t rival thi pring such as Bate and Coast Guard Academy in some very excit ing dual meets. Lastly, men ' s var i t y placed 1 3th a t the New England Rowing Champion ships, however, this fin ish was not reflective of the team ' s great progre t h i sea on. Senior captain , Nick Gambino, ha been with the team for four year attaining captain his la t year. Gambino' co-captai n, place finish which would not Jeff Sparrow '05 , will continue qual i fy for a bid to the NCAA on next year with Ted Farwell Championship. Nevertheless, 'OS joining him a co-captain. goftball Finish ing Strong The 2004 sea on for Colby oftball wa almo t bitter weet, as we experienced overall suc ce s and a great record, but fai led to make NESCAC play offs. At 1 6- 1 1 - 1 , we had one of the best overal l records in recent year . However, we lost key games agai nst NESCAC opponents. After l ast year' s accompl ishment o f h o t i n g the NESCAC playoffs, this year was di appointing in that re spect. The e cruc ial conference games proved to be really fru trating, since the majority of our losses were by I or 2 runs. The three pitchers for our team this year, Lauren Olmsted '06,

Toni -Lynn Robbins '05 and Lindsey Toomey '07, had great seasons. They kept u in v i rtu al ly every game, and gave us a chance to get the job done with our bats. Wendy Bonner '05 stood out as our most talented hitter this year, fini hing w ith a .385 batting average. She was the only player hitting above . 300 for the year. Al so, we proved to maintain mental trength and a per evering att i tude after we were knocked out of playoff contention we fi n ished the season by win ning 8 of our la t 9 games, inc l uding a 7 game winning treak. Women--This spring we aw the return of 3 junior from abroad and the addition of a new freshman . We went from being a relatively young but talented team in the fal l , to a team with incredible depth right down the entire ladder in the spring. We just mi sed qualifying for the NCAA tour nament which was di appoint ing after uch a great competi tive season(arguabl y one of the best in CWT's history ) but with only our senior captain gradu ating thi year, there i no doubt that thi team w i J I be reari ng to take on the rest of the North east agai n next year. Badminton The Colby Badminton Club has been in existence ince 1 996 when Michael Farrell created the club his freshman year. Since then, the club has only grown. Although it has been an athletic club there are no tryouts and it is open to all who want to play.

Besides being open to all levels of play, the

club spans international boundaries. Students from the all across the Eurasian continent play in the club and make up a very large contingent. The club also draws illustrious professor from Colby academia including Professor Scheck and Professor Livshits. The club now owns over 20 racquets and four nets. Regularly scheduled meeting times happen every Friday and Sunday throughout the year on the basketball courts of the Alfond Sports Complex. The third annual badminton tournament went well again this year with over 25 participants and we hope to be part of future intercollegiate tournaments as our club grows. The leadership continues with the effort of President Will Sander ' 04 and VP Rafa! Urban ' 04. We cannot forget to mention all the students that have come down once or numerous times to help support the club.
