Advanced Learner Loan

Available to Further Education Students 19+ Learner Loan Overview

Repayments

If you are aged 19 or over and are thinking about further education, you may be eligible for a Advanced Learner Loan, for help with your tuition fees.

Repayments are linked to what you earn and not how much you borrow.



You will start to repay your loan in the year after you finish studying or after three years from the start of your course, whichever is earlier, if you are earning more than £21,000.



Repayments will automatically be deducted from your earnings through the tax system, once you have left the course and your income is £21,000 a year.



19 years old or over on the first day of your course (there’s no upper age limit)

If your income falls below £21,000, your repayments will stop.



Living in the UK on the first day of your course, and have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for three years immediately before this

The repayment rate is 9% of your income, above the first £21,000 before tax, so for example, if you were earning £23,000 a year your monthly repayment would be £15.



You can pay some, or all of your loan at any time without an extra charge.



Any outstanding balance is written off after 30 years.

Applicants must be studying further education at level 3 to level 6. Most learners that fall into this bracket will be eligible, it doesn’t depend on your household income and there’s no credit check! Am I eligible? To qualify for this loan you must be:

What can I get? The Advanced Learner Loan, to help pay your tuition fees. The minimum loan you can get is £300 but the maximum will depend on how much the fees are and the type of course you take. You don’t have to borrow the full cost of your course – if you wish to pay some of it yourself, and take the rest as a loan, you can choose to do that. How is the loan paid? The money is paid directly to the College.

Access to Higher Education (HE) If you get a loan to cover tuition fees for the Access to HE course and then complete a higher education (degree) course, you won’t have to repay the remaining loan for the Access course.

AAT Certificate and Diploma Fast Track Financial management is at the heart of every business, so demand for accounting and finance skills is consistently high across all sectors. Association of Accounting Technicians The AAT Certificate and Diploma is a fast track to Level 3 and includes the AAT Level 2 Certificate. This intensive fast-track programme provides you with an introduction to professional accountancy. Completion of the full programme will allow you to work as a trainee accountant and provide a firm grounding for future training and progression. You will receive foundation knowledge of accountancy through a mixture of classroom teaching and simulated activities to replicate the type of work you would be doing in industry. Assessment per unit is achieved by external computer based exams. There is only one opportunity to re-sit an exam and all mandatory units must be completed before the synoptic exam is completed. The dates for exams are set. Entry Requirements AAT Foundation, or Certificate Level 2, or an A Level in Accounting, including extensive knowledge of double entry bookkeeping. Applicants without the above criteria will be interviewed to assess academic suitability. Applicants should visit the AAT website and undertake the skills check to ensure that they start at the correct level. Course Progression On successful completion, students could progress to the Diploma in Accounting Level 4 to gain further accountancy skills that can lead to full membership of the AAT, and to higher professional accounting qualifications.

AAT Accounting Professional Diploma Level 4 Get the skills you need to become a financial team leader or set up your own practice with the AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting. Art and Design

Art and Design Foundation Diploma UAL Level 3 This long-established course has an excellent record in placing students in higher education. The Art and Design Foundation Diploma course will introduce you to a range of art and design disciplines, where you will be able to build a portfolio to showcase your skills for job interviews or applications to higher education. It consists of seven core units and offers a mixture of practice and theory, highlighting visual and wider introductory, contextual and diagnostic studies. You will have the choice to specialise in one of our seven areas of study: Fine Art, Graphic Design, Fashion and Textiles, Illustration, 3D Design and Craft and Photography. This enables you to gain a refined understanding of a particular area of the profession. This course is delivered through a combination of studio and workshop practice, guided assignments, tutorials, seminars and lectures. A considerable amount of personal study and research will be required. By taking responsibility for independent learning and managing time effectively, this course will provide an excellent springboard to future study and progress towards careers objectives or further study. The course begins with a visit to a museum/art gallery that provides artwork for the first two units. There is also an educational visit abroad that provides students with the inspiration to enhance their portfolio material.

The foundation year was an excellent way to determine what subject specialism I wanted to study further. The tutors were always supportive of my ideas and decisions, enabling me in my creative approach. Bricklaying Diploma Level 3 The Bricklaying Diploma Level 3 course has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions ensuring you leave us with the expertise and knowledge required industry. Working within our fully equipped training workshops you will work with real materials and on projects you would expect to find in industry. Practical and theory sessions are combined to provide you with an understanding of basic and more advanced bricklaying techniques. Assessment is based on the student demonstrating competence as an individual through the completion of all the requirements of the qualification. Children’s Play, Learning Development Children’s Play, Learning and Development BTEC Foundation/Extended Diploma Level 3 This programme is designed to help you build the knowledge and childcare skills needed when working with children and young people from birth to eight years. Complementary Therapies Diploma Level 3 This level 3 Diploma is for students who want to practice as a level 3 therapist in the Complementary Therapy sector. Candidates will gain an understanding of Body Massage, Aromatherapy and Reflexology, as well as business practice, anatomy, physiology and pathology and integrate health and safety into all treatments. Entry Requirements A keen interest in Complementary Therapies is essential, as well as an understanding of Anatomy and Physiology and a good standard of education. It is highly recommended that candidates should have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSEs (grades A*-E), including English and maths, or satisfactory results in a relevant Level 2 qualification, and an interview. However exceptions may be made to adult returnees with experience in the workplace. In particular students who have achieved Level 2 and/or Level 3 in Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing will be considered, subject to successful board of studies decision and reference. Career Opportunities Many career paths will be opened through this course including work in salons, leisure centres, spas and health farms. This award qualifies candidates to operate their own clinic or home visiting practice. It also forms the basis of the first steps in becoming an independent Complementary Practitioner. Current students participate in voluntary work at Colchester NHS Hospital, working on the wards alongside Healthcare Practitioners and Ward sisters offering Complementary Therapies to patients and attending Health Care wellbeing events, which provides valuable work experience. From couture fashion houses to high street retailers, they all need their designers to have the appropriate mix of creative and technical skills. The Public Services BTEC Diploma course provides many opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life. Sport (Development)

Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) BTEC 90 Credit / Extended Diploma Level 3 The Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) BTEC Extended Diploma course will provide the opportunity to develop practical vocational skills, knowledge and understanding for work and coaching in the expanding area of leisure and recreation. A variety of learning styles are developed. These include formal class learning, group work, presentation and individual tutorials relating to the assessment programme. Learners initially enrol on the course as a one year programme with the option to leave after successfully completing the first year. Sports Coaching

Sports Coaching College Diploma Level 3 This course is designed to give you qualifications and practical skills directly applicable to the sports industry. The main themes of the College Diploma are sports coaching, sports leadership, working with children and fitness instructing. The course is made up of a diverse range of modules that form the College Diploma in Sports Coaching. A variety of learning styles are developed and include formal classroom lessons, group work, presentations, individual tutorials and practical coaching sessions. All students are encouraged to find voluntary work in sports coaching prior to starting the course. Course Content Sports Coaching Diploma students have the opportunity to achieve a range awards that may include the following – Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leaders – this includes Event Management, Disability Sport and Emergency First Aid Training. 30 UCAS points are awarded on achieving this qualification.

The modules on the course are recognised nationally in the sport, leisure and recreation field, providing students with very comprehensive curriculum vitaes (CVs). Course Progression As the College Diploma is a diverse combination of various awards it is not nationally recognised in its own right (although each individual award is). The opportunity may exist for students to progress onto Higher Education. The extra UCAS points available may enhance a university application.

Technical Theatre

Technical Theatre BTEC 90 Credit Diploma/Extended Diploma Level 3 Set, lighting, sound, props and costume! These are a few of the considerations required to put together a production. This course looks at each of these and more develop skills that are transferable from an arena sized concert or a theatrical production all the way to small scale touring theatre. Employment has grown alongside technology in this area and so there are job and higher education opportunities for students who complete this course of study. The Technical Theatre Extended Diploma course programme focuses on developing the broad range of skills necessary for progression to work or further study at degree level in technical theatre. The qualification has been designed to meet the needs of the creative and cultural industries. The emphasis is on practical skills underpinned by theoretical understanding and industry standard health and safety practices. Much of the work will be in support of the wide range of performances in theatre, dance and music that take place each year as well as having opportunity to speak to industry professionals, take part in production workshops and visit local and regional theatres. Each project you complete is designed to be realistic to what you would expect in industry. Course Content You will complete the 90 Credit Diploma in your first year and continue to the Extended Diploma in your second year.

There are many opportunities in the field of production arts including stage management, sound operation, lighting design and operation, rigging and set construction. This may involve working in a theatre, an arts centre, schools and colleges, conference venues or touring. Course Progression Successful students could progress directly into work or on to higher education courses such as the Foundation Degree/BA (Hons) in Technical Theatre at Colchester Institute, BA (Hons) in Lighting Design at Rose Bruford or BA (Hons) in Technical Theatre in East 15.

Vehicle Accident Repair Paint Principles Vehicle Accident Repair Paint Principles Diploma Level 3 The Vehicle Accident Repair course is for learners who have already achieved a level 2 paint qualification and wish to develop their paint skills further. The course will enable the learners to develop skills and understanding of the procedures for the refinishing of new and repaired vehicle panels. Welding Fabrication Day Release Level 3 An intensive course designed to produce craft persons capable of employment in industry. This modular scheme develops practical skills and theoretical knowledge to a level that suits the individual’s needs. The mandatory units are Metal-Arc Gas Shielded, Tungsten-Arc Gas Shielded, Manual Metal-Arc, Engineering Drawing, Fabrication, Materials and Science and Calculations. Class-led activities include theory, practical tasks and demonstrations. Entry Requirements For the Level 3 day time programme it is expected that individuals will be employed in the welding or fabrication industry.

Welding and Fabrication Practice Certificate Level 3 The Welding and Fabrication Practice Certificate Level 3 programme covers a range of different advanced techniques required by industry including welding of fine grained, low alloy steel and stainless steel. The programme makes extensive use of practical training in our modern fabrication and welding workshops, where you acquire the skills to operate manual metal-arc, metal arc gas shielded and tungsten arc gas shielded processes. This is a work-related qualification, with content reflecting the developing technologies in industry. You will combine practical activities such as engineering drawing with lectures, assignments, personal and group tutorials. On successful completion, you will be competent in the welding of fine grained, low alloy steel and stainless steel. Fabrication skills will involve engineering drawing and the production of fabricated exercises requiring competence in pattern development. Delivery includes a combination of classroom lectures and tutorials, workshop practice and demonstrations.
