In 2016 Colchester Institute successfully applied to deliver its degree provision under the name of University Centre Colchester (UCC), recognising fifty years of excellence in delivering degrees and the success of our employer-led, research driven courses. We work in partnership with the University of Essex for the validation of our degrees.

Our degrees are validated by the University of Essex, endorsed by employers and taught by staff with extensive industry experience. The 1,100 students who study at University Centre Colchester (UCC), not only enjoy the use of their own building and study facilities here in central Colchester, but have access to a range of social, sporting and study facilities at the University of Essex, just a few miles away. Students value their small teaching groups and ready access to academic staff who know their students well and provide individualised support and guidance. For fifty years we have equipped thousands of students with the skills they have needed to realise their aspirations and helped students of all backgrounds exceed their potential. Whilst studying with us, you will embark on a journey of selfdiscovery, but at the same time you can expect the highest levels of academic, pastoral and employability support, giving you the best chance of success, now and in the future. I studied BA Sculpture at university, as I was drawn to hands-on 3D making. Whilst at university, I did some work experience with Anthony Caro, the abstract sculptor. Afterwards I worked with Anthony as an Artist’s Assistant I’ve always liked the idea of teaching, as I wanted to give something back. Before going into the profession, I was a firm believer of living and working as an artist first - in order to be a better teacher. Neil Ailing, Lecturer in Fine Art

At the same time I began a part-time IT degree at UCC, graduating with First Class Honours, before starting a post-graduate qualification in Education. My tutors were fantastic and the support and encouragement I received during my degree gave me the confidence to put myself out there in the world of fashion and interior design. In my final year I won the Graduate Fashion Week Protégé Project and worked at Matches Fashion. After winning BBC2’s The Great Interior Design Challenge I have now started my own interior design business and aim to build a design studio of distinction with products representing my defined aesthetic. Daniela Tasca York, BA (Hons) Fashion and Textiles, graduated 2009

I always knew I wanted to go into fashion and textiles, even from a very young age. I studied for an MA in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern at the Royal College of Art, before becoming an Art Director at a fashion print studio in London. At UCC we provide a nurturing learning environment and small class sizes, enabling students to build up working relationships and work together collaboratively. Employer-led standards provide specialist industry-based training, allowing you to acquire higher level skills that can lead to professional accreditation and membership. With additional Government funding available for higher and degree apprenticeships you can study without incurring the cost of tuition fees or running up student debt. Working closely with employers UCC is developing apprenticeship standards that meet industry needs and incorporate current practice, in areas including management, healthcare, construction, engineering and information technology. Higher apprenticeships at Level 4 and 5 are equivalent to a CertHE, DipHE or Foundation degree, with Levels 6 and 7 equivalent to master’s and bachelor’s degrees.

There were so many opportunities available to us, from experimenting with materials to public exhibitions. The facilities in the Art department are a huge asset, with technicians and tutors who continuously support you. I completed an internship at the Saatchi Gallery in London and also worked at Honywood Academy School, supporting the Art department. I am now studying the PGCE at UCC and working with Level 2 Art and Design students.

The course has given me an excellent grounding for re-entering my career at a higher level and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to work in a managerial role on-site. The Psychology behind People Management, Site Management, and Health and Safety modules were especially interesting and I use them extensively in my current position. I now work as an Assistant Site Manager for Cadman and I am currently working on the College’s new STEM Centre.

Having studied science at Masters level, I wanted to transfer my skills towards a career in teaching. The PGCE gave me a really good advantage as I was able to get lots of practical experience to complement the theory I was learning. The lecturers were really supportive and I enjoyed the refreshing learning environment. I am now Course Leader for Science at Colchester Institute and get so much out of my rewarding career. Rachel Shedd, PGCE, graduated 2015

I had previously completed both the National Diploma in Art and Design and Foundation Diploma in Art and Design before starting the degree course. The creative briefs were especially rewarding and gave me a lot of freedom to explore. I pretty much went straight into an internship after graduating and started at Ustwo digital product studio in August 2013. Design is my passion and I look forward to progressing my craft with the team at Ustwo. Adam Benton, BA (Hons) Graphic Design, graduated 2013
