OFSTED DECLARE US ‘GOOD’ IN EVERY RESPECT In February 2016, Ofsted inspectors visited our three main campuses in Colchester, Braintree and Clacton, as well as the Energy Skills Centre in Harwich and The Learning Shop in Dovercourt. We were declared ‘Good’ in every respect and we are delighted with the result, which came in the same month we moved into our new £10m Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) centre in our South Wing building on Colchester campus. Our staff were observed challenging students to work at a high standard and supporting them to develop new skills to prepare them for the working world. We are proud to be a ‘GOOD’ college and look forward to welcoming you to one of our campuses.

This guide aims to provide you with the information you need to help you make the right choice about your next steps in education and training – but a prospectus cannot tell you everything! STUDY PROGRAMMES Our Study Programmes, or full-time courses, combine a number of different components to equip you with a set of well-rounded skills for the future. Every programme incorporates a vocational qualification (for example an Extended Diploma), development of Great English and Maths (GEM) and work experience, which we call GAP.
PROGRAMME LEVELS AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Aim Higher Level 4 and beyond! See page 10 for information about higher-level study. Level 3
Typically* five GCSEs (grades A*-C/9-4)
Level 2
Typically* four GCSEs (grades A*-E/9-3)
Level 1
Typically* three GCSEs (grades A*-G/9-1)
Entry level No formal entry requirements, just an enthusiasm to learn and develop your skills to allow you to progress onto another programme within the College.
Unsure which programme level is for you? Come along to an Open Event, speak to your Careers Adviser at school for guidance or call our enquiry line: 01206 712777 *Specific entry requirements for each programme are listed on the individual subject pages. In some cases, we will consider other qualifications that are deemed to be equivalent to GCSEs, for example Functional Skills and qualifications achieved outside the UK, provided valid certificates are produced. PLEASE NOTE: The new grading system (9-1) only applies to GCSEs taken from 2017.
NEW GCSE GRADING SYSTEM 2017 Ofqual has introduced a new grading system for many GCSE subjects. These GCSEs will be graded 9 to 1, instead of A* to G, with 9 being the top level. The Ofqual grading structure to the right is a comparison guide showing the ‘old’ and new GCSE system. For more information please visit: gov.uk/government/organisations/ofqual

This training will enable you to learn professional techniques and perfect your chosen craft to get you ready for the working world.

GREAT ENGLISH AND Maths English and maths skills are essential building blocks for any career. Almost every job requires you to have the ability to read, write and use numbers confidently. That’s why we are prioritising the use of Great English and Maths (GEM), not only at College but in all areas of life. Words and numbers are all around us and being able to use them well is a valuable skill for work, study and everyday activities. Our GEM initiative encourages you to look at words and numbers differently, approach challenges in new, innovative ways and explore different ways of thinking. GEM is all about getting the skills you need to get on. We have a dedicated team of GEM tutors, specialising in English and maths, to help you every step of the way, whatever your ability. Whether you join us with GCSEs in English and Maths (grades 9-4) or are still looking to achieve this level, we have something for everyone.
Maths used to be my most hated subject at school because I didn’t think I was any good at it. But my judgement soon changed when I took my GCSEs again this year at Colchester Institute. The GAP placement that I did at A. Smiths of Great Bentley provided me with a valuable insight into how highquality coaches and specialist vehicles are built. Over the two days, I was paired with skilled staff who helped support me in applying what I have learnt at the College to a real working environment. If at any point during the application process you wish to change your programme choice, please contact our Admissions team on: 01206 712777
Will my school/college be contacted?
Yes, if you are currently at school/college. We will ask them for confirmation of your predicted grades and general information about how you are progressing.
How will I know if have been offered a place?
Once you have attended an interview, we will contact you with details of whether your application has been successful. Offers will be subject to meeting the entry requirements of the programme as outlined in this guide. In the event that you did not get onto your chosen programme, we will do our best to ensure you are referred to an appropriate alternative. Please check your email account regularly so that you don’t miss important information about your offer.
What if I don’t get the GCSE results I need?
If you don’t get the GCSE results you needed to meet your conditional offer, don’t panic. We hold advice sessions at the end of August each year so you can come and speak with our tutors to find out about your options. The dates and times for each advice session are displayed on our website in the months leading up to GCSE results day.
When I finish my programme, will I be able to progress onto the next level of study?
We always encourage our students to aim high to achieve their maximum potential. On most programmes there is an opportunity to progress onto a higher level, and after Level 3, we offer a number of different degree-level programmes too. Progression to a higher level is not guaranteed and will be subject to you gaining a satisfactory result in the preceding qualification and meeting the necessary entry requirements for the higher-level qualification.
