Case Study 7YVÄSL Name: Phil Hawtin Course: HNC Electronic Engineering Experience: Field operations and engineering I originally studied at Colchester Institute for my ONC in Electronic Engineering so when my work approached the subject of returning part time to study a HNC, there was only one place I wanted to go! I enjoy the in-depth theory of electronics. It’s not something I get to do very often at work, as I tend to be designing whole systems rather than individual circuit boards, so it’s great to dive into something that is a little outside the box of everyday life. 0 OH]L JOHUNLK QVI YVSLZ ^P[OPU T` JVTWHU` YLJLU[S` SLH]PUN ÄLSK VWLYH[PVUZ HUK QVPUPUN [OL LUNPULLYPUN [LHT /H]PUN H /5* X\HSPÄJH[PVU is part of the competency framework for my current position, so studying here will allow me to progress further up the framework. Case Study 7YVÄSL Name: Scott Ampleford Course: BA (Hons) Film Music and Soundtrack Production Experience: Composer for The Doctor Puppet series Whilst studying BA (Hons) Film Music and Soundtrack Production I began writing music for The Doctor Puppet. I got the chance to work with creator Alisa Stern and her team of freelance animators in New York. I landed the opportunity when a friend spotted Alisa’s advertisement on Tumblr for a composer for her Christmas special and I’m so glad I followed it up. Since then there have been many more episodes of The Doctor Puppet with extended storylines, which has allowed me to explore and develop more unusual musical themes. In 2015 Doctor Puppet received recognition from the BBC with a full page feature in the January edition of Doctor Who magazine and we were honoured to have Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman from the TV series to provide the voices for an animated sketch for a BBC 3 documentary. The music for the second Christmas special was recorded at Colchester Institute and the majority of musicians were my fellow students, while the choir was made up of Colchester Institute musical theatre students. It is great to work with such a dedicated and talented group of animators, designers and musicians, including Phil Toms, Head of Digital Media, Music and Performing Arts, who orchestrates the music for live performances. :[\K`PUN ÄST T\ZPJ HUK JVTWVZPUN ;OL +VJ[VY 7\WWL[ ZLYPLZ OHZ NP]LU me an excellent understanding of working to a creative brief; turning a ZJVYL HYV\UK X\PJRS` PZ HU LZZLU[PHS ZRPSS PU [OL ÄST PUK\Z[Y` +PZJ\ZZPUN [OL brief with Alisa enabled me to take the musical score in the right direction and the freedom to collaborate with students across other courses really pushed the work forwards. 75

Case Study 7YVÄSL Name: Belinda Howell Course: BA (Hons) Technical Theatre Experience: Swan Lake, BBC Children in Need I really couldn’t have asked for a course with more variety than this one. The focus on mixing practical tasks and theory was what drew me in, and it’s quite a niche subject in comparison to other degree courses. Our lecturers also work in the industry so this provides us with a greater advantage as they understand what is desired in this competitive industry. Work placements have been a great experience throughout my time here. I have worked with the BBC’s Children in Need and Swan Lake and made some amazing industry contacts, who I look forward to working with again. Having graduated, I am now studying for a PGCE as I am really passionate about passing on my knowledge and skills to other young enthusiastic technicians. 83
