What is an Apprenticeship? An Apprenticeship is a great way to combine learning with working. You can develop your practical skills and knowledge in the workplace and at College, and gain nationally recognised qualifications to enable you to succeed in your chosen career. An Apprenticeship is made up of a group of qualifications, called a framework, devised by employers.

Apprenticeship Framework Technical Certificate (Award, Certificate, Diploma) These are industry recognised qualifications which focus on the relevant knowledge that underpins the Apprenticeship. Most Apprenticeship programmes will normally include one or more technical certificate or diploma, dependent on the industry sector and level of study. Training is normally delivered at College on a day-release basis.

Work-Based Learning (NVQ) NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) and VCQs (Vocational Competence Qualifications) are achieved through assessment and training in the workplace. They are recognised by employers as evidence that apprentices are competent in their job role and meet the national standards set by the Sector Skills Council for the industry sector.

Functional Skills (English, Maths and ICT) Functional Skills in English, Maths and Information Communications Technology (ICT) are included in the Apprenticeship and equip learners with the practical skills required in everyday life, education and the workplace. Advanced apprentices will study either Functional Skills or GCSEs English and Maths, depending on their existing grades.

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Apprentices are required to demonstrate that they know and understand areas such as employer and employee rights and responsibilities, equality and diversity, and health and safety procedures for their organisation. This may be through completion of a specific qualification or workbook.

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) Apprentices will have the opportunity to develop skills and qualities that are important in preparing for successful learning, work and life. Skills include planning and decision making, problem solving and setting targets, working effectively with others, creativity and enterprise.

Higher Apprenticeship (Level 4) Higher Apprenticeships can take between three and four years to complete and are equivalent to a Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma.

Applying for an Apprenticeship All Apprenticeship programmes require you to be in a suitable job role or ready to start employment. If you are not in employment we can talk to you about the ways we can help you to improve your skills and find a job.

Prepare for your Apprenticeship • Register with the National Apprenticeship Service who run an online vacancy service (See page 7). • Come to one of our Open Events (see back of this guide) and talk to staff with specific industry knowledge and experience. • Keep your CV up-to-date and research interview techniques. • Start networking! Talk to friends, family and contact companies who may be interested in employing you. Use the local paper and Internet to find out who is offering Apprenticeships. If you are employed and would like to do an Apprenticeship, you are required to be in a suitable job role, with an employer that will support you through your Apprenticeship programme. You will need to hold a contract of employment, working a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Qualification entry requirements will differ for each Apprenticeship, as they each require a different set of skills and abilities. Please see the Apprenticeship course pages on our website www.colchester.ac.uk/apprenticeships for more information. You will need to attend an interview and an initial assessment test in English and maths. For some Apprenticeships there is also a pre-course skills aptitude assessment. You must be over 16 years of age and live in England. If you are interested in applying for one of our Apprenticeship programmes you can complete the application form in the back of this guide.

When can I start? Most of our Apprenticeships start at various times throughout the year. The Accountancy Apprenticeships start in September and Dental Nursing Apprenticeships start in January and September. You can apply for an Apprenticeship at any time of year. When you begin the work-based training depends upon the availability of a position with an employer.

Key benefits of being an apprentice include: • • • • •

Earning a salary Getting paid holidays Receiving training Gaining qualifications Learning job-specific skills

Earning while you are learning Apprentices do real jobs for real employers. So you’re paid while you learn. Employers all over the country recognise and value Apprenticeships as they show that you’ve been trained in the skills they need.

8

Training at College You will attend College, either on day-release or over a number of days in a block. The amount of time you spend at College varies according to your Apprenticeship. All the things you study will be useful in your job and help you succeed in your future career.

Pre-Apprenticeships Pre-Apprenticeships are specially designed training programmes to help you gain the skills you need to secure an Apprenticeship. Apprenticeship Opportunities Colchester Institute is proud to offer even more Apprenticeships through the BCT, where our highly regarded training providers offer even more choice. Our network of valued training providers offers a wide range of work-based training across Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk.

Case Study Having left school at 16, Aydan, from Benfleet in Essex, was interested in a career in the automotive sector and was introduced to the Independent Windscreen Academy. IWA found Aydan an Apprenticeship with Windscreen Services, based in Canvey Island. I’ve always wanted to have a career that involved working on cars and I found out about automotive glazing when I left school. Being able to fit a windscreen on my own has been one of my best ever achievements and I hope to be out working in my own van in a couple of years.

ip h s e c i t n e r p Ap ry Success Sto Maldon Primary School The school’s ‘Good’ Ofsted rating has been achieved through strong teaching and leadership. School Business Manager, Lynda Ferguson-Watts, leads a team of customer focused staff in the busy school office. The team liaises with parents, teachers and external services to ensure the efficiency of administrative and financial processes.

Why did you choose an Apprenticeship Scheme?

Will you continue to employ apprentices in the future?

I chose an Apprenticeship scheme because I wanted to build a new Administration and Finance team for the school with new people, with no preconceived ideas about what needed to be done and how it should happen. Being new to the education sector myself, I wanted to explore alternative ways of working and achieving our goals. Recruiting a motivated and committed team with the right skills and an enthusiasm for learning was a key part of this process.

Absolutely! Katie, my first apprentice in the office, has developed into an important member of our team and she is an asset to the school. Our second apprentice, Sasha, is also doing extremely well and I would anticipate her being made a permanent staff member at the end of her Apprenticeship. My only issue is that I have been spoiled by the first two apprentices being so good that I don’t have room for any more!

How do you feel the school has benefited?

Our apprentices have excelled our expectations, with the support from Colchester Institute being a valuable contribution.

BUSINESS

Colchester Institute provided the benefits of pre-screening and interviewing Apprenticeship candidates, which has saved me a huge amount of time in my already hefty workload.

20

It meant that the apprentices have a well thought out course to complete which could be adapted to my needs in a school setting. It also allowed us to ensure we were managing the needs of the apprentice effectively, by ensuring enough time was allowed for course work and that their learning and progress were being monitored by the College as well as ourselves.

ip h s e c i t n e r p Ap ry Success Sto Name: Amy Apprenticeship: Children and Young People’s Workforce (Intermediate) Employer: Kiddi Caru Day Nursery Amy knew before she completed her GSCE studies at St Helena School that she wanted to work with children. After accepting a place on the level 3 childcare course at Colchester Institute, Amy decided that an Apprenticeship would be the best career move. Following a successful interview at Kiddi Caru in Colchester Amy started an Intermediate Apprenticeship in November 2012.

With support from my tutors I was given the opportunity to take on an Apprenticeship. This has enabled me to practise the skills I’ve learned in class, and to evaluate my work activities in College. I also wanted to get a better understanding of children, from babies to preschool age, and how play and learning resources are used. An Apprenticeship is a mature way to learn, as a paid member of staff I am required to be professional and well-presented; at College I enjoy training with a friendly group, of all ages, where we learn from each other’s work experiences.

How will the Apprenticeship help you? The Apprenticeship has definitely prepared me for work in a childcare setting. I know how a nursery operates and everything that goes into the job of a nursery nurse. Being treated like an adult, and taking responsibility for my work at the nursery and at College, has prepared me for how adult life will be. I’ve also completed training at work in the Early Years Foundation Stage, EpiPen and first aid.

What are your career plans and ambitions for the future? I am going to do the level 3 Apprenticeship at Kiddi Caru, to become a qualified nursery nurse. In the future I hope to go to university to take a degree and then have a career as an Early Years teacher in a primary school.

ip h s e c i t n e r p Ap ry Success Sto N.E.C.T.L. Electrical Services N.E.C.T.L. was established in 1998 and received full approval from the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting in 2000. The company specialises in high quality commercial and domestic work and bespoke inspection and testing services for prominent customers in the retail, medical and television industries.

I also look for someone who can think outside the box, because not every job is straightforward; I need people who are willing to adapt and find solutions to any problems they encounter. As we cover all electrical work our apprentices are taught in a range of fields, from fault finding in a domestic setting to inspection and testing of medical facilities and everything in between.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS

Why did you choose an Apprenticeship scheme?

34

We decided to take on an apprentice as we felt it was the best way to employ someone who could be trained in the high standards that our customers expect, while giving them the opportunity to earn and to communicate in a college environment, which helps them adapt socially. As I myself attended Colchester Institute I was aware of the quality of the programmes available. I specifically look for apprentices who are fully committed to working and making electrical services their career; someone who is well presented and interested in following what is happening in the industry.

How do you feel the company has benefitted? Employing apprentices has enabled us to grow organically as a company, while ensuring the quality of work produced, our customer service and the reputation of the company is maintained. It also gives us a sense of family. Three qualified apprentices (photographed above, from left, Josh, Matt and Ryan) are now valued members of the Team. Ryan has worked with the company for ten years, Josh for six years and Matt for two years.

Will you continue to employ apprentices in the future? I will continue to employ an apprentice as other people move upwards. It can be an excellent way to grow your company, whilst instilling the skills you want and need for a successful business. www.colchester.ac.uk/apprenticeships

ip h s e c i t n e r p Ap ry Success Sto Name: Max Apprenticeship: Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair (Intermediate) Employer: Piccolo Moto Ltd Max’s interest in motorbikes began while he was a student at Colne Community School. After finishing his GCSEs Max decided motorcycle mechanics was the career route he wanted to take. He completed the full-time level 1 Motorcycle Maintenance Diploma at Braintree and started an Apprenticeship in September 2013.

Why did you choose an Apprenticeship at Colchester Institute? I enjoyed the level 1 course and knew that an Apprenticeship would be the best way for me to get the right skills for the industry. I’d volunteered on Saturdays at Piccolo Moto in Colchester, as a trial to see how I got on, and am pleased they offered me an Apprenticeship because I want to get more experience in the workplace. It is also good to be earning money while I’m training.

MOTORCYCLE

How will the Apprenticeship help you?

50

Doing an Apprenticeship is enabling me to learn a lot more and get a real insight into what a work environment is like, after studying full-time at College. Working on different types of motorcycles, including high performance bikes and older models, is helping me to gain a wide range of important skills. Feedback from my employer and tutors at College is giving me the knowledge and confidence to get on with practical work by myself.

What are your career plans and ambitions for the future? I plan to keep on learning and building up my skills, to take my career as far as I can. There are so many opportunities in the motorcycle industry and I want to make sure that I have the right qualifications and experience.

Information for employers Why choose Apprenticeships? Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of you the employer, which lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Most of the training will take place at your premises, with day-release at one of our many sites. Apprenticeships are designed by the Sector Skills Councils and business representatives from the sector or industry. The Sector Skills Councils develop the course content for the Apprenticeships within their own specialised area and because they genuinely understand your business, the training will be relevant for your industry.

Apprenticeships focus on the whole job, not just individual skills, allowing apprentices to learn through on and off-the-job education and training. Apprentices will be trained on-thejob by your staff, to your company’s standards, in line with the Apprenticeship framework; at our campuses they will learn in supportive environments, with tutors who have extensive knowledge of their industries. The Apprenticeship Scheme can be used to train both new and existing employees.

Facts about Apprenticeships • Over 130,000 employers currently offer Apprenticeship places to attract new talent and re-skill existing staff. • 92% of employers who employ apprentices believe that Apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce. • 83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on their Apprenticeships programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future. • 80% of those employers who employ apprentices agree they make their workplace more productive. • One in five employers are hiring more apprentices to help them through the tough economic climate. • 81% of consumers favour using a company which takes on apprentices. • Employers who take on a 16 - 18 year old apprentice only pay their salary. The Government will fund their training. • The National Minimum Wage for apprentices is £2.68 per hour. Many employers prefer to pay more and research shows that the average salary is approximately £170 per week. (Source: National Apprenticeship Service)

Apprenticeship Enquiries (01206) 712242

57

How will my company benefit from employing an apprentice? By recruiting an apprentice you are given the opportunity to address any existing or potential skills gaps using Government funded training. We can assist you with the recruitment of an apprentice, or you may have staff already in the workplace who require training and want a nationally recognised qualification. An Apprenticeship is available to anyone over the age of 16 who lives in England. For further information contact our Employer Liaison Officers on (01206) 712250 or email elo@colchester.ac.uk.

As an employer what are my responsibilities? • To provide your apprentice with a contract of employment • To provide an induction into their role • Provide on-the-job relevant training • Pay your apprentice their wages • Contribute to the course fees for apprentices aged 19 or over • To undertake a Health and Safety check • To provide opportunities for your apprentice to practise their skills and develop their portfolio

58

National Minimum Wage A National Minimum Wage for apprentices was introduced in October 2010. The wage is currently £2.68 per hour and applies to all apprentices in the first year of their Apprenticeship. This applies to time working, plus time spent training as part of the Apprenticeship. Employers pay an apprentice the National Minimum Wage if aged 19 or older and in the second year of an Apprenticeship. These are the minimum wages an employer must pay and employers are actively encouraged to pay more. An employee who is already on a higher rate of pay prior to starting an Apprenticeship must continue to be paid the higher rate. Wage subsidy grants may be available, subject to eligibility. Please visit www.colchester. ac.uk/apprenticeships for further information.
