At the heart of all our courses is our desire to develop concepts, designs and objects that will challenge and inspire. Colchester School of Art has a history dating back to 1885, the year the original Art School was founded. As well as being witness to the many great developments and upheavals of the twentieth century, the School has adapted to the various changes that have taken place in art and design practice during that time. Despite all those changes, the basic principles we work with are not so dissimilar to those of the original art school. For at the heart of what we do is a belief in the importance of acquiring the intellectual and practical skills that artists and designers need, both as a basis for understanding how ideas can exist and for developing concepts, designs and objects that will challenge and inspire. The challenge for us, the thing we must constantly strive for, is that of maintaining the integrity of our courses by ensuring that those skills are developed within a relevant contemporary context.

Foundation Diploma in Art and Design This long-established course has an excellent record in placing students in higher education.

Course Type Full-time
This course is designed to help students identify subject specialisms and apply to higher education. Students are able to take pathways in 3D design and craft, fashion and textiles, fine art, graphic design and photography. It will provide individuals with the opportunity to develop a subject specific portfolio for application to Honours level courses or a career in the creative industries.

Course Code ZH19851 Applications Direct to Colchester Institute Entry Requirements You will be required to present a portfolio of recent work and demonstrate an enthusiasm and aptitude for art and design. One A Level grade C (or equivalent) in an art and design subject and a strong GCSE profile including English at grade C or above. All equivalent international qualifications are welcome, as are applications from mature students with alternative qualifications and/or work experience. All applicants are formally interviewed.
Students will be taught by practicing artists and designers who will provide them with the knowledge and understanding to make an informed decision about further study and careers in art and design. Through introductions to a wide range of processes and practices, the course combines an opportunity for investigation, innovation and experimentation.
Course content The course is divided into three stages.
Stage 1 - Exploratory Set projects encourage students to challenge pre-conceptions and to become more independent in their study. Students will also undertake workshop inductions in media, such as clay, digital, metal, photography, plaster, printmaking and wood. As new skills are explained, students will develop a better understanding of the nature of different specialist areas and of their own preferences and abilities.
Stage 2 - Pathway Validated by

Following the exploratory stage, students will discuss with tutors which of the pathways they would prefer to specialise in. This stage provides focused teaching in one of these specialisms: 3D design and craft, fashion and textiles, fine art, graphic design and photography. Students will explore the processes and materials associated with their pathway and involve themselves in contemporary and historical art and design practice by visiting
a variety of exhibitions, museums and venues independently. This complements a programme of visits to London galleries and an international residential study visit. Students will also prepare their portfolio and make applications for further study.
Stage 3 - Confirmatory This is the culmination of the Foundation experience and takes the form of a ten week, self-initiated project resulting in a final exhibition, presented to the public in the End of Year Show. During this project students are expected to demonstrate their ability to work independently and realise their ideas in a professional manner.
What our graduates do After completing the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design in 2006, James Allen and Elliott Hammer went on to study Typography, at degree level, at the London College of Communication. Since graduating they have set up their own London-based design studio, Birch, working with clients such as Salvatore Ferragamo and Black Box Press. They both share their experience with current Foundation students as visiting lecturers. Harry Watts completed his Foundation in the 2006 and went on to study on the BA (Hons) Editorial Photography programme at Brighton University. He has since worked as an apprentice photographer at The Times newspaper and completed an Internship at Photoworks magazine. His recent photographic work featured as part of the 2010 Brighton Photo Fringe Festival.

Foundation Degree in Photography A broad-based course designed to prepare students for a career in commercial photography, fine art, photojournalism, picture editing, picture research, curating and exhibition organisation, photography writing and criticism.

Who is this course for?
Art, design and craft analysis
This course is designed for applicants who already have a clear understanding of the specialist direction they wish to pursue. It will extend and develop their knowledge and understanding within one of the four discreet pathways on the BA (Hons) Art and Design courses.
Through lecturers, seminar discussions, research, practical and written work, students will be introduced to historical and contemporary art and design practice, theory and ideas.
Course description This course is delivered through set projects, lectures, seminars, tutorials, demonstrations, theoretical and practical investigation, studio and workshop practice, exhibitions, field trips and self-directed study. Students will explore essential skills and processes relating to their subject pathway as well as subject relevant aspects of drawing, researching and recording. Encouragement and support is given to build and develop the personal and study skills needed to express and communicate ideas.
Course content Drawing An introduction to a range of drawing practices and principles relating to the subject area. As well as engaging in reflection on their own work, students will learn about the drawing of other historical and contemporary artists in their field. The skills and understanding developed here will assist students in developing and giving form to their ideas in all other areas of their studies.

I travelled around, looking at a lot of different courses and found this one offered me everything I wanted, including a breadth of choice and experience that I hadn’t expected to find anywhere.
Materials, processes and procedures An introduction to the practical skills and expertise that students will need to explore and realise their ideas. As well as receiving separate inductions in these areas, students will also be encouraged to explore and experiment with integrating and combining them on set project work.
Art and design development Explore, investigate and develop responses to a brief through research, practical work and reflection. As well as spending time working in the studio students will be free to independently access appropriate workshops in the department. Emphasis is on the independent development of ideas and encouraging students to take ownership of the learning process.
Art and design specialist project An opportunity to further extend, develop and refine, research and ideas and the practical execution of work. Whether it is via a set brief or a project proposal that has been devised, students will be encouraged to take further responsibility for the direction their work takes.
What our graduates do Following successful completion of their foundation year, Jade O’Bryan and Hannah Parry are currently in the second year of the BA (Hons) Art and Design: Graphic Design course. Jade and Hannah recently collaborated on a live project set by OMC Investments to develop a brand identity for a new boutique hotel in Colchester and won third prize.

BA (Hons) in Art and Design with Foundation Year (Part-time) This is a higher education programme for mature students. The course will refresh and develop skills and help students to choose the subject they want to continue to studying in art and design.
Who is this course for? We currently have a range of art and design courses that can be studied at degree level, but for those wanting to return to education after a number of years away, it can be a daunting prospect and that’s exactly who this course is for.
Course description The first year is a general introduction to art and design practice, via a drawing programme, practical skills workshops, art history, research and study skills, all of which are aimed at providing the student with expertise and knowledge needed to progress, and consider which subject area to specialise in. The second year will focus on producing work in the student’s chosen subject (for example, Fine Art, Fashion and Textiles, 3D Design and Craft, or Graphic Design). The emphasis here is on employing and further enhancing the skills and knowledge acquired during the first year to develop a portfolio of work for progression onto a degree level course in that subject.

Structured practical sessions introduce the student to a range of drawing practices and principles in both traditional and unconventional drawing materials. The skills and understanding developed here will assist in developing and giving form to ideas in all other areas of study, which makes it an important cornerstone of the course.

Art and design specialist project
This final module is a continuation of the work produced for the art and design development module, providing the opportunity to further extend, develop and refine their research and ideas and the practical execution of their work. Students will be encouraged to take greater responsibility for the direction their work takes. The module will conclude with a presentation of their work in an appropriate exhibition space.

Who is this course for? Applicants for this broad-based course will develop a range of skills in wood, metal, plastics, ceramics and glass, that will enable them to pursue diverse careers from glass and ceramics to product and furniture design, through working in consultancies or self employment as applied artists. This course will develop and refine the students’ visual language skills through rigorous engagement with materials and processes. What our graduates do Amy Turnbull was awarded the annual Cuckoo Farm Studios Graduate Award which gives her free studio space for a year and a solo exhibition at The Minories art gallery. She also found employment as a part-time gallery assistant, at the newly opened firstsite, shortly after graduation. This is a healthy balance for her, as she can practice and work in a professional arts organisation where she is also developing educational tools.
The theoretical aspect of the course has been inspiring and has solidified my understanding of the process of making and interpreting art. The large studio spaces provide the raw atmosphere required by artists.

In the second year, I felt a lot more confident with my ideas and projects. This is probably because I learnt a lot about using new programs and feel able to produce a larger variety of things. The punctuation project I enjoyed because it felt like a team effort. I do like it when we work in groups because this is how it will be when we find jobs.

MA Art, Design and the Book Explore the intellectual, practical and commercial means through which artists and designers can utilise the book as an appropriate vehicle for carrying concepts, from one-off artworks to limited edition runs and to mainstream publishing projects.

This course is for individuals looking to broaden their understanding of art, design and the book through individually tailored research projects, coupled with in-depth analysis and facilitate a personal application of concepts to appropriate professional practices. Graduates can expect careers as practising artists and as designers serving a wide range of publishing media including books, magazines and websites.
Miranda Hart graduated in 2011. She is a practising book artist and writer, and recently exhibited at the Codex book exhibition and symposium in Berkeley, California and at the Fine Press Book Association Exhibition in Oxford. She project manages The New Bookbinder for the Designer Bookbinders. Miranda’s work has been commissioned for public and private collections in America and she is currently applying to undertake a PhD.
Course description The existence of the book, its functions and influence have grown and diversified enormously since the introduction of electronic media and online publishing. The growth in exhibitions, book fairs and independent publishers demonstrates the extent to which new technology has freed the book from its traditional function as a formal container of information. This course aims to explore these dynamic functions and influences.

Course description The MA Contemporary Art and Professional Practice provides opportunities for artist teachers to review and develop their personal creative practice in relation to the highest levels of contemporary practice in the contexts of higher education institutions, museums and galleries. Students will benefit from the art, design and educational expertise of Colchester School of Art and firstsite. This provides direct access to contemporary art and artists through engagement with the contemporary art programme and resources at firstsite, and other galleries, and allows for greater opportunity to experience a range of professional contexts.

The opening module, Re-thinking Our Practice, is structured to support art practitioners re-engaging with their own practice and experimenting with new ways of working. Alongside this, they are introduced to research methods and encouraged to develop independent approaches that are appropriate for their particular interests and practices. Later modules build on these foundations so that through critical reflection, practical and theoretical engagement with contemporary art practices and ideas students will build a solid base for future study, creating new work and continuing professional development as artist educators. Course delivery is through lectures, seminars, group critiques and tutorials, which will address the students’ own practice in the
context of debates relating to contemporary art and educational practices as well as wider cultural theory.
The award The programme is divided into three postgraduate awards, each of 60 Merit level credits. On successful completion of each stage, students will progress to the next: Postgraduate Certificate/ Postgraduate Diploma/Master of Arts.

MA Sculptural Practice The MA in Sculptural Practice is a unique cross disciplinary practical MA, focusing on the realisation of ideas into objects through making supported by workshops and critical reflection.

This course is aimed at and attracts a broad range of applicants, from those previously associated with fine art/sculpture to those within craft and design areas. It is particularly suited to individuals who are interested in developing their practice as artists, by exploring the relationship between making and thinking and the way in which ideas can be developed into objects through that process.
Many graduates continue to develop their work as sculpture or craft practitioners as well as continuing their study at doctoral level.
Course description This programme is based in a dedicated studio spaces at The Minories in the centre of Colchester. It provides a high level of tutorial contact time from a range of lecturers and practitioners. As a studio-based course, study is predominantly practice-based, but there are also modules on the History and Theory of Contemporary Practice and Action Research, which individuals will pursue with specific reference to their own interests and ideas.
