The Higher National Certificate/Diploma provides a broad introduction to the areas of creative media in the first year including camera and lighting techniques, editing techniques and production techniques within the industry. Film studies and enrichment screenings are provided in both years to broaden the students’ understanding of the industry and genres, and provide a critical context to their project work. In the second year of the HND, there is the opportunity to specialise in a particular genre or contextual area and to produce a project within that genre through the sequence of preproduction, production techniques and postproduction for their films. On completion of the course, students will have their own ‘showreel’ of work shot to professional standard which will help them gain access to jobs in the industry. The course includes a work placement in the second year. The Faculty of Creative Arts provides a rich source of projects through collaborative working with actors, musicians, dancers, music technologists, film music composers and technical theatre practitioners.

Creative employment provides around two million jobs, in the creative sector itself and in creative roles in other sectors. Employment in the sector has grown at double the rate of the economy as a whole.

The thing I enjoyed most… was performance workshop, as I feel it really helped me to develop as a performer and also challenged me to be creative for assessments. I also greatly enjoyed the recording module as it taught me lots and lots of techniques which have proven to be incredibly useful since leaving the course and have had a large impact on my skill level as a recording engineer. Course description The first year provides a broad introduction to the areas of technical theatre including lighting, sound, stage management and scenic construction. These will be studied within the context of the nature of theatre and the role of technicians and stage managers within theatrical performance. The research and investigation module is designed to provide students with the opportunity to widen their understanding of the theatre business by a focused investigation of policies, procedures and business systems within a local theatre venue. Throughout the year, students will support and assist with the public performances mounted within the Faculty of Creative Arts. There are a range of performances throughout the year including; dance, musical theatre, acting and music. The second year builds on these foundations by developing skills in lighting and sound design and introduces new skills in computer aided design and scenic design. Students will work in production capacities across a range of events including concerts, plays and musicals. What our graduates do Successful completion of the Foundation Degree in Technical Theatre allows for progression to year three of the full-time BA (Hons) in Technical Theatre. Some graduates of the Foundation Degree have gone directly into work within the industry. Previous students have moved into the area of events management and scenic design, taking on the skills learnt on the course and using them in the wider context of the creative and cultural industries.

Since starting the course I have learnt lots of new skills in a wide variety of areas within technical theatre, including lighting, sound and scenic construction.

This course aims to develop confident and proficient practitioners able to compose and coordinate original music in a variety of styles using musicians in a variety of ensembles and through technology both in performance and recording.

Course description The programme is designed to train the students in the musical, technical and analytical skills needed to succeed in a variety of media industry positions including self-employed musician, composer, arranger, sound designer, mixing engineer. Whilst studying a variety of traditional and modern techniques, students have the opportunity to extend their existing music and music technology skills at the same time as expanding their knowledge of other practices such as orchestration, vocal mixing and musical direction. Members of staff are working practitioners in the industry, working in live music, composing for film, television, video games, the internet, radio, theatre and with sound companies. Although designed as three year full-time degree (six years part-time) programme, there are named exit routes at the end of year one (Certificate of Higher Education in Film Music and Soundtrack Production) and year two (Diploma of Higher Education in Film Music and Soundtrack Production). Our facilities include a suite of 28 Macs running Logic, Reason, Sibelius and Soundtrack Pro and two main recording studios. We have a concert hall and many bookable practice rooms for bands and orchestral ensembles.

MA Music A postgraduate course designed to enhance the professional skills of current music practitioners, whether recent graduates or working professionals.

Who is this course for? This course will suit recent music graduates as well as those already working in the music industry. It provides a broad academic framework for study at this level and beyond, and the ability to specialise in an area which is relevant to the individual. Four specialist subject areas reflect the nature of employment within the profession; performance, composition, music management and education (both mainstream music education and instrumental/vocal tuition in private practice).

Course description The MA in Music can be seen as a ‘taught’ programme which achieves a balance between research and practical elements within a particular area of focus (performance, composition, music management or education). Its modular structure allows both full and part-time study. Relatively small postgraduate numbers facilitate a high level of student support and the potential for students to develop their individual research interests.

Course content In each specialist subject area, the course culminates in a final 60 credit module which is based on practice. This module will be undertaken independently by students with tutorial supervision and seminars to share work in practice.

Fees Major Government reforms to student finance commenced in 2012-2013 resulting in universities and colleges being able to charge variable fees. Universities and colleges that want to charge more than the basic fee (level not yet set for 2015-2016) must provide additional support to promote access to disadvantaged students.
