Why Colchester? At Colchester Institute, we aim to provide you with a high quality, industry related, learning experience, whether that is in the creative industries, construction or hospitality, or in one of our many other specialist vocational areas. We oer Edexcel HNC and HND programmes and also Foundation Degrees, Honours Degrees and postgraduate programmes awarded by the University of Essex. The College is very proud of its well established partnership with the University of Essex. In a competitive market, having a quality mark such as the Essex brand is important for you as you invest in your future. Having our partner university only five miles away, means that as a degree student at the College, you can study in their library, apply for sports centre membership, access accommodation (for degree students moving into the town), engage with student union activity and enjoy the lively social scene. Entry to most entertainment organised by the University of Essex Students’ Union is available to Colchester Institute degree students on production of a valid NUS card.

Our teaching staff are able to meet up with their counterparts at the University in order to share best practice and engage in scholarly activity that enhances learning and teaching. Our students say that they are very pleased with the professional expertise and the academic knowledge of tutors, many of whom continue to practice in their vocational field. They celebrate the level of support provided by tutors and the accessibility of teaching teams. Our students also applaud opportunities for professional accreditation and industry based activity during their studies. Examples include accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) for those undertaking construction degrees, the development of underpinning knowledge for Cisco qualifications (computing), external performances, exhibitions and competition for those studying in the creative arts. Take a look at the details provided in the course prospectus for the programmes that interest you. You will appreciate the benefits of studying in smaller groups than might be found at university, together with the study support available (and much valued by many in their first year of higher level study), the specialist vocational facilities, the responsiveness of our programme development teams and the way in which we listen to our student feedback. In September 2012 we welcomed students to our new Higher Education Centre, a dedicated space for our degree level students. The Centre includes the base for the HE Operations Team - a one-stop shop for all higher education enquiries. We have provided quiet and group study areas and an HE Common Room, together with dedicated teaching spaces. The Higher Education Centre has www.colchester.ac.uk
I am also excited to tell you that as a new degree or HNC/D student enrolling on your first year of degree level study at the College, you will be given an iPad* to assist the mobility and flexibility of your learning experience, together with an iTunes gift card to get you started with your purchase of educational apps. The iPad has many exciting features to support your learning journey. Some examples include; a battery that will last all day, a plethora of free educational applications, access to your course Moodle and the potential to develop a learning network through social media. We will also be developing our own bespoke apps to allow you to get the most from your time at College.

been flooded with WiFi and houses a new coffee shop for degree level students, staff and visitors only. The development of the Centre was requested by our students and underlines the commitment of the College to the quality enhancement of the learning experience for degree level students.
These are just a few of the actions we are taking to enhance your higher education experience and I am looking forward to celebrating further aspirations and achievements through both our website and Twitter feed @CI_HE as we continue to move forward in our quest for excellence. I look forward to welcoming you to Colchester Institute. Jane Davis Director of Teaching and Learning *Please see www.colchester.ac.uk for full terms and conditions relating to the supply of iPads. Colchester Institute offers many services to the public, and its staff and students. The hair and beauty salons offer great treatments at exceptional prices. Fancy a new hair colour, or perhaps a full body massage? Whatever you’re after, the salons at the College are sure to offer it. Celebrity chef, Gary Rhodes is patron of the Centre for Hospitality and Salon Studies - which also has two fantastic, award winning restaurants. The Colne Bistro and Balkerne Restaurant are open to the public five days a week and offer delicious, five star meals at great value. If you’re shooting off to a class and have no time to sit and eat, the three refectories offer tasty food at even tastier prices. Or, why not relax with a coffee in our on-campus Starbucks or 55 Degrees, our new coffee shop within the dedicated Higher Education Centre?

Why Colchester?
The Town Colchester Institute is set within Britain’s oldest recorded town, a town that exudes history, modern culture and creativity. The thriving university town has a population of 170,000 and demonstrates a dynamic and exciting urban lifestyle. Studying with us means being only a ten minute walk away from the town centre, where you can find an abundance of shopping facilities, bars, clubs and restaurants. Whether your taste is English, Chinese, Japanese, Italian or perhaps Indian - Colchester has it all and, what’s more, caters for all budgets! Colchester’s nightlife offers something for everyone. If a traditional pub is what you’re looking for, or dancing till the early hours, you won’t be disappointed. Instead of dancing until you drop, perhaps shopping until you drop is more your style. The town offers quirky, independent boutiques along the little lanes, as well as the larger, more famous brands and stores. The town has a diverse range of modern and historic cultural activities to take part in, from the Colchester Arts Centre (whose home is a converted church - and has seen the likes of Lucy Porter, Sean Lock, Tim Vine and Adrian Edmondson perform) to the wonders of the Norman castle set in the beautiful Castle Park.
10
An exciting programme of exhibitions, lectures, films and events takes place at firstsite, Colchester’s spectacular new venue for world class contemporary arts. The Mercury Theatre is well known throughout the town, with quality performances staged during the year. It has also played host to some well known acts, including Lee Evans and Michael McIntyre. If that wasn’t enough, Colchester offers many more attractions including one of Europe’s finest zoos, a multi-screen cinema and a spa combined with top notch leisure facilities at Leisure World. The town really does cater for all ages, interests and tastes. Making Colchester your place to study or live means you are in good company. TV presenter Dermot O’Leary lived and studied in Colchester whilst Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz fame and X Factor winner Matt Cardle, are also from the area. Colchester is situated in north east Essex, just a few miles from the Suffolk border, with more towns, countryside and coastline to explore. For those seduced by the bright lights of the big city, they are less than an hour by train from London. Colchester Institute is only a 10 minute walk from North Station, where you will find regular trains into the capital. If a little sea air is what you’re after, then you’re in luck too. The beautiful sea shores of the award winning Frinton coastline are only a half-hour drive away, along with the seaside towns of Clacton and Walton.

These can include Tuition Fee Loans, Maintenance Loans and Grants, and Disabled Students’ Allowance. For more information please visit the Student Finance website at www.gov.uk/studentfinance, or call 0845 300 5090. For part-time courses, applications open in August.
DUAL ORT NING
