PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME
Welcome to our Undergraduate and Postgraduate prospectus for 2016 and thank you for your interest in degree courses here at Colchester Institute. Colchester Institute is a well-established provider of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, focussing on vocational subject areas with programmes which genuinely prepare students for exciting jobs and careers. Our degrees are validated by the University of Essex and endorsed by employers to ensure that the content meets current and future industry requirements. We constantly review and update our course content, and this, coupled with large numbers of teaching staff who are current and recent practitioners contributes to our students’ success in developing the skills and knowledge most valued by employers. In turn this converts to high levels of relevant employment at the end of the course. Together with our diverse community of degree level students, you will enjoy the use of a Higher Education building, which provides lecture rooms, private study rooms, a common room and access to a team of staff whose role it is to ensure a first class experience for you. You will also enjoy a range of social, sporting and study facilities at the University of Essex, just a few miles away.

Another aspect of Colchester Institute’s Higher Education that is always highly prized by our students is the ready access they are given to teaching staff who take the time to really get to know their students and provide individualised support and guidance. But don’t just take our word for it! Come and see us at one of our Open Events held throughout the year, or call our Admissions team on 01206 712777 to arrange a visit at any time. We’d love to introduce you to the staff and students who can tell you first-hand about the fantastic experience you too could have with us. Alison Andreas Principal and Chief Executive

YOUR CAREER, YOUR FUTURE WHY STUDY WITH US? We offer a unique vocational learning experience, with practical and theoretical teaching embedded in our flexible full and part-time programmes. Our courses are designed with employers’ needs in mind and incorporate industry visits, guest lecturers and work placements. Flexible delivery provides the opportunity for students to fit their studies around employment or other commitments. Employability is central to what we do, we have recently been commended by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education for our innovative approach to embedding employability into all aspects of the curriculum and continue to ensure employability is always a priority for your learning. Our courses are delivered by tutors with strong backgrounds in industry and business; many continue to practise in their vocational field, so you will be learning from the best. Their professional expertise and academic knowledge is valued by our students and provides a unique understanding of the industry and a competitive edge when entering the workplace.

“The College takes a strategic and innovative approach to embedding employability, in its broadest sense, in all aspects of the curriculum, thereby facilitating improved student understanding of the relationship between theory and practice.” Review of College Higher Education of Colchester Institute, May 2013
“I have 22 years of industry experience. Although I am now a course leader, I continue to practise, growing my experience. I think that it is important to stay active in the field as there is always something to learn and another skill to improve in this fast paced industry.” Barry Hurd, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Graphic Design
Our strong links with local employers have enabled our students to gain placements with some of the best in the business, including Hiscox Insurance, Premier Inn and Platinum Crown, to name a few. We encourage all of our students to carry out work experience and placements alongside their course, where possible, to further develop their knowledge and understanding of the industry. This experience helps to build confidence in the work place and industry knowledge, both of which are highly valued by employers.
“The work placements have been especially worthwhile as part of my course; I’ve gained experience with all age groups and I’ve been able to put the theory learnt in the lectures into practice.” Louise, BA (Hons) Early Years
We also provide the opportunity for you to study abroad via the Erasmus Exchange programme. If you choose to study on a nationally recognised qualification, full-time or part-time, you can study part of your course in another European country, including Spain, Italy, Germany and Belgium. More information on the Erasmus programme can be found on our website at: www.colchester.ac.uk/international As well as the fantastic employability opportunities, we ensure that our students are supported throughout their studies, with dedicated careers, finance and welfare teams available to provide specialist advice. There is also an on-site nursery, which provides discounted rates for our students. You will find more information on our student support services on page 13.

STUDENTS’ UNION We are here to represent students in all matters, whether they are related to welfare, studies or social matters. We provide students with a voice via course reps to regularly gather feedback on what our students really want. As a student with us you are automatically a member of CISU and are entitled to vote and stand in Union elections for positions such as President, Vice-President, Higher and Further Education Officer or Active College representative. This is my second term as President and my aim is to get as many students as possible involved in the Students’ Union. The Students’ Union organises activities throughout the year and trips every month for all students to enjoy. Freshers’ Fair in October is a highlight in the student calendar and is an exciting event where new students can meet and socialise at the start of the academic year. During Freshers’ Week there are lots of activities including sport tasters and fun workshops - like circus skills and chocolate making! Our new Student Zone has loads of great facilities for students including table tennis and pool tables, PCs for studying or games, a chill out area and the College Shop. There are a number of sporting and non-sporting activities to take part in across the college. Our anime and games clubs are very popular. We also have table tennis, volleyball and basketball clubs and classes such as Zumba. There is a club or society for everyone to join – but if you cannot find the right one for you, you could even start your own.

The College can give you so much; not only a qualification, but also valuable skills and experience that will really benefit you as you start your career. ART, DESIGN AND PHOTOGRAPHY 24
Creativity and innovation are cornerstones of the flourishing creative and cultural economy. Within our Faculty of Creative Arts there is a firmly held belief that art and design education is especially suited to the development of those attributes, together with the capacity to be flexible, versatile, adaptive and reflective thinkers. At the heart of all our courses is our desire to create concepts, designs and objects that will challenge and inspire. Our focus is on developing an environment where your imagination and creativity can develop, in studios and workshops that are equipped to offer you the opportunity to express and realise your ideas and ambitions.
25
UAL FOUNDATION DIPLOMA IN ART AND DESIGN This dynamic course provides you with the opportunity to develop a subject specific portfolio to support your application to a full degree level course or it can also provide you with base knowledge for a career in the creative industries.
Course outline This programme enables you to develop your practical and thinking skills and allows you to build a strong portfolio of work for applications to degree level programmes. During an intensive and dynamic year of study you will be introduced to a range of art and design disciplines through a combination of workshop, studio, off-site, seminar and lecture sessions. You will undertake a broad diagnostic approach to visual thinking and idea development and have opportunities to specialise in a variety of areas including: Fine Art, Graphic Design, Fashion, Textiles, Craft, Illustration and Lens-based Media. This programme encourages you to take risks, to experiment and to develop your reflective skills.
Modules include: Art and Design: Research Methods • Idea Development • Materials and Methods • Evaluation and Reflection • Preparation for Progression • Project Proposal and Realisation.
What our graduates do The majority of our students progress to degree level study in art and design. For example, after completing the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design in 2006, James Allen and Elliott Hammer went on to study Typography, at degree level, at the London College of Communication. Since graduating they have set up their own London-based design studio, Birch. They continue to visit the College to share their experience with current students. Another graduate of ours, Harry Watts, went on to study on the BA (Hons) Editorial Photography programme at Brighton University. He has since worked as an apprentice photographer at The Times newspaper and completed an Internship at Photoworks magazine.
Course content You will be taught by practicing artists and designers who will provide you with the knowledge and understanding to make an informed decision about further study and careers in art and design. Through introductions to a wide range of processes and practices, the course combines an opportunity for investigation, innovation and experimentation. In addition to attending taught sessions, you will be expected to develop your ideas independently through personal study and research. During the programme you will also have the opportunity to take part in educational visits and enrichment activities to enhance your portfolio material. Validated by

CASE STUDY
Computing students John Nolan (pictured), Byron Cooke and Christopher Byrne made the 2014 final of The Pitch, the UK’s biggest small business and start-up competition, with their social media business venture called Waffler. The competition attracts hundreds of entries each year and is run in partnership with AVG, Microsoft and Nokia. John explains, “Waffler is a speech based social networking platform enabling users to send a 10 second post called a ‘waffle’, which can be speech or any piece of audio or music; there is also a walkie-talkie function providing simultaneous live voice communication between friendship groups. “During my second year on the BSc programme I began looking for the ‘big idea’ for my final year project. Web accessibility has always been a passion of mine and one day when I read a social post aloud I thought “Hey! Nothing is lost in translation when social posts are spoken. Given that Colchester Institute has a very entrepreneurial atmosphere, turning my idea into a business was a natural process. All the project management and presentation skills I learned during my degree prepared me for the biggest pitch of my life - so far!” Waffler is now a registered company and John and his colleagues hope to expand the concept to Facebook, Twitter, smart watches and Google Glasses. “We gained a lot of exposure in the press and blogging community. Walking away with contacts from Silicon Valley was a huge plus; having our idea validated by people who created huge technology enterprises was very humbling. I think that social media has not realised its fullest potential and creating posts with our voices brings an almost human element back.” www.thepitch.uk

CASE STUDY
Danielle studied the BSc (Hons) in Construction Management (Commercial) part-time over six years. “I chose construction as it was something different and had brilliant prospects - I certainly wasn’t fazed by the fact I was in a male dominated industry. I initially came to Colchester Institute to study for a BTEC Diploma in Construction. However, once I was here, I was attracted on to the degree programme because of the level of teaching I had previously received and the smaller classes. “Alongside studying I am a management trainee for Barnes Construction, in Ipswich. I found the placement myself and instantly knew that it would have a positive influence on my degree course. I was able to apply what I learn at work to my assignments and vice versa. After graduating I plan to continue working with Barnes Construction and settle down in the department that I chose and work my way up.”

CASE STUDY
The BA (Hons) in Counselling Studies has given Agne a goal to focus on, with plans for further study on a Masters degree and a career working with children and young people. “I moved to Colchester when I was 21 and was unsure about what I wanted to do with my life. However, working just around the corner from the College and seeing the students was really inspiring. I decided to look into the courses that were available and called in to have a chat - everyone was really helpful. I learned about the counselling course and felt it was perfect for me. I had an interview, a couple of days later I was told I could enrol, and here I am! “The course has helped me to believe that I can make a difference. It has taught me so much about emotions, fears, insecurities, difficulties of bereavement and the challenges people have to overcome in their journey through life. I am hoping to study for a Masters degree in child play therapy and work with children and adolescents in need of support. I’m specifically interested in working with children who have experienced neglect and young offenders. Thanks to this course, I now have a goal to focus on and exciting plans for the future.”

CASE STUDY
Our music students have been instrumental in composing and performing the soundtrack for The Doctor Puppet Christmas Special, a traditional stop motion animated series made in the USA based on the hit BBC series Doctor Who. The YouTube series has over 65,000 subscribers and has had over 1.7 million views. Composer Scott Ampleford, who is studying on the Film Music and Soundtrack Production degree has been writing music for the series for the past two years and enjoys working with professional animator and The Doctor Puppet creator Alisa Stern, and her team of freelance animators in New York. “A friend spotted Alisa’s advertisement on Tumblr for a composer for her Christmas Special and I’m so glad I followed it up! “, says Scott. “Since then there have been many more episodes of The Doctor Puppet with extended storylines, which has allowed me to explore and develop more unusual musical themes. In 2015 The Doctor Puppet received recognition from the BBC with a full page feature in the January edition of Doctor Who magazine and we were honoured to have Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman from the TV series to provide the voices for an animated sketch for their documentary on BBC Three. “The music for the second Christmas Special was recorded at Colchester Institute and though the 2014 Christmas episode used other locations the majority of musicians were Colchester Institute students and the choir comprised musical theatre students. It is great to work with such a dedicated and talented group of animators, designers and musicians, including Phil Toms, Head of Digital Media, who orchestrates the music for live performance. Composing for The Doctor Puppet series has given me an excellent understanding of working to a creative brief; turning a score around quickly is an essential skill in the film industry. Discussing the brief with Alisa enabled me to take the musical score in the right direction and the freedom to collaborate with students across other courses really pushed the work forwards.” You can watch The Doctor Puppet Christmas Special on Youtube: www.youtube.com/hellodoctorpuppet http://doctorpuppet.tumblr.com
