From Creativity to Employability The Faculty of the Creative Arts has been created through the amalgamation of the Colchester School of Art and the Centre for Music and Performing Arts. It brings together all of the arts courses including creative performance (acting), fashion and textiles, fine art, graphic design, music, popular music, musical theatre, technical theatre and 3D design and craft. This represents some 1600 full time students and 180 staff, both full and part time. Our courses can take you from entry level up to postgraduate study. Not only are we a large department in terms of student numbers we are also active as an arts organisation in our own right. We are an Associate College of the National Skills Academy for Creative and Cultural Skills and an active partner with the many arts organisations in Colchester. We work closely with firstsite, the Mercury Theatre, the Colchester Arts Centre and Colchester Borough Council. We have our own art gallery, The Minories, as well as a busy programme of concerts, gigs and theatre performances. At the heart of what we do is a belief in the importance of the creative arts as a realistic and achievable career. We do this by focusing on the intellectual and practical skills that musicians, performers, artists and designers need, both as a basis for understanding how ideas can exist and for the development of concepts, designs and objects that will challenge and inspire. The challenge for us, the thing we must constantly strive for, is that of maintaining the integrity of our courses by ensuring that those skills are developed within a relevant contemporary context. We believe that people learn best when they work together, exploring ideas and sharing insight. Our focus is on developing an environment where your imagination and creativity can flourish. I hope that you will find a course in this prospectus that can start you on that journey to a rewarding career in the creative arts.

Maths and English The development of maths and English skills are seen as an essential part of any full-time course of study at the College. These subjects can be developed either through the qualifications of Functional Skills or GCSEs, depending on the level which most suits your needs. Learners who study to improve their skills often find that they are better equipped to successfully complete their vocational courses and progress to employment or higher education. Employers have already told us they value people with maths and English skills that can be used in a range of real-life situations to work out solutions to everyday problems. Universities have told us that developing maths and English skills as part of the curriculum and learning routes mean young people and adults entering higher education are more able to focus right away on their course and can cope with what comes their way. Functional Skills Functional Skills are practical skills in English, maths and ICT that allow learners to work confidently, effectively and independently in life, including education and training. They aim to increase achievement in all learning, improve employability and provide a sound basis for progression to further study or training. They also help develop other important skills such as team work, presentation and problem solving. Functional Skills are essential for: • getting the most from education and training • personal development of all young people and adults • developing employability skills GCSE retakes Any school leaver on our full-time Further Education programme, who has grade D in GCSE English or maths will have the opportunity to take a re-sit. In order to give the best chance of success, students with a D grade in both subjects will normally only attempt one re-sit course per year.

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships These qualifications are gained in the workplace, where you can learn on the job and earn a wage at the same time. An Apprenticeship is made up of a group of qualifications, called a framework, devised by employers. It includes an NVQ or similar qualification, a technical element and Functional Skills, at the relevant level to your Apprenticeship framework. These nationally recognised qualifications give the apprentice transferable skills and the modular style of delivery enables the apprentice to achieve milestones throughout the Apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are offered at three levels: Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) – on completion this is equivalent to five GCSEs, grades A*- C. Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) – on completion this is equivalent to two A Levels. Higher Apprenticeship - on completion this is equivalent to a Foundation Degree, Level 4, Higher National Diploma. Apprenticeships have no set duration as the time taken will depend on the ability of the apprentice and the employer’s requirements. On average an Apprenticeship will take a year or more to complete, an Advanced Apprenticeship, two years and a Higher Apprenticeship between three and four years to complete. This can vary between sectors. Candidates must be over 16 years of age, not be in full-time education and live in England. There are no set qualification entry requirements; each Apprenticeship is different and will require a different set of skills and abilities. For further information please visit: www.colchester.ac.uk/apprenticeships.
www.colchester.ac.uk
To undertake an Apprenticeship you must be employed or be ready to start employment. We can assist you in finding employment.

Key benefits of being an apprentice include: Earning a salary Getting paid holidays Receiving training Gaining qualifications Learning job-specific skills Earning while you are learning Apprentices do real jobs for real employers. So you’re paid while you learn. If you are entering work for the first time, you will start earning from day one of your apprenticeship. There is no set rate of pay for apprentices, however all employed apprentices must receive a wage of no less than £2.68 per hour. However the average wage per week for an apprentice is now around £170 and in some job roles around £210 per week.
