La Obra del Prestigioso Ingeniero y Hom. bre PUblico, Comendador Felix Benitez ! Rexach dentro y fuera de Puerto Rico I El ingeniero Felix Benitez Rexach nacio en Vieques, Puerto Rico. Se ha destacado notablemente en la profesion de Ingeniero Civil y por su labor en el desarrollo portuario y economico de la Republica Dominicana, ha sido condecorado par el Gobierno de la misma con la Orden de Juan Pablo Duarte y la Orden de Cristobal Colon. Al analizar el progreso de Puerto Rico durante los ul timos veinte aiios no podemos dejar de reconocer que el desarrollo portuario de San Juan, Puerto Rico en su mayor parte se debe a su dinamica labor profesional y a sus esfuerzos pecuniarios personales. Fue el senor Benitez Rexach el Pionero del turismo en Puerto Rico. Cuando en Puerto Rico nadie se ocupaba del turismo y las facilidades eran pesimas para esta industria, ana para el aiio 1930, el construyo con capital personal el Muelle Num. 3 de dos plantas, para que el turista que llegara a la Isla, por vapor y cuando aun no se sofi.aba con la transportacion aerea, usase la segunda planta para desembarcar evitando a este las inconveniencias de las carretas y el peonaj e sudoroso del muelle. Este muelle puei:le decirse que se inauguro con el regreso del heroe puertorriquefio, Dctor Franceschi Caballero. Fue ahi donde este desembarco acudiendo a recibirle el pueblo entero de Puerto Rico. Los esfuerzos del Comendador Felix Benitez Rexach en impulsar y desarrollar el turismo llegaron basta el punto de que cuando en Puerto Rico nadie invertia un solo centavo en empresa privada alguna el con capital pro-
pio construyo el Escambron Beach Club, el primero y unico balneario de seguridad para los bafiistas que aun existe en Puerto Rico y que por su belleza natural continua siendo el unico sitio exclusive de recreo de mas atraccion y confort para. el turista y mas aun para la sociedad puertorriqueiia. No conforme con esto y visionando la necesidad de hoteles modernos en Puerto Rico. concibio y construyo el moderno Hotel Nonnandie el mas comodo y lujoso hotel del pais. Para la realizacion de todas estas empresas y otras mas que nose citan aqui, jamas el Gobierno de Puerto Rico aporto su cooperaci6n economica y puede decirse que la yuda de este, ha sido negada y entorpecedora muchas veces. Contra todo esto, el Sr. Benitez Rexach sigue adelante como barca invencible con sus velas infladas, todo por el bienestar de su pais que tanto ama. El Comendador Felix Benitez Rexach en su brillante y enaltecedora carrera politica siempre ha mantenido el ideal de que su pueblo debe ser libre y soberano. Contra los ataques de unos y otros siempre ha seguido adelante defendiendo este ideal. Fue candidato a alcalde para la Capital de Puerto Rico, alla por el 1940, candidatura que acept6 con Ja promesa de dejarle hacer del San Juan antiguo una Capital n1oderna. Los intereses creados e:::J.torpecieron sus prop6sitos y desvelos. Siguiendo el afan de sus ideales fue Delegado del Congreso de Independencia de Puerto Rico ante el Congreso de los Estados Unidos, investido con la alta mision de abogar por la independencia de Puerto Rico. vicciones firmes sigue este camino con valor y empefio en perjuicio de sus propios intereses. Fuera de Puerto Rico y desde el aiio 1935 en union del dinamica y sabio Estadista de la Republica de Santo Domingo, Generalisimo Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina ha contribuido al progreso de dicho pais y a sus mej oras portuarias. Ha construido puertos artificiales en toda la republica y de ahi el progreso economico de la Republica Dominicana envidiado por muchos paises que no han podido tener la vision del Generalisimo Trujillo Molina y los servicios del prestigioso puertorriqueiio Ingeniero Felix Benitez Rexach. Y aqui en Puerto Rico, a parte del progreso portuario que se relata al principia de este comentario sabre su obra, en todo lo que se ha hecho en rna te~ ria de ingenieria no se puede eliminar el nombre del Sr. Felix Benitez Rexach, ya que la mano creadora de este gran puertorriqueiio ha sido puesta desinteresadamente en la misma. Ahi estan sus obras: el Puente Guillermo Esteves"; el Saneamiento del conocido arrabal "El Fanguito"; el Puerto de Mayaguez; carreteras, edificios publicos y -:>tras obras de ingenieria modern a que hacen honor a Puerto Rico. Podriamos hablar mucho de la carrera profesional de este gran puertorriquefio que se llama Comendador Felix Benitez Rexach, cuya obra aun mas grande en tierra hermana tan to admira el pueblo dominicano, asi como tambit~n los hombres puertorriquefios de pensamiento libre que tienen altos ideales y honradas convicciones. 9

El Hotel Termas Quitandinha
Una preciosa vista del Hotel Quitandinha situ a tlo cerca de ciudad de Petropolis.
En el camino de herradura que unia antiguamente Petropolis a :Rio de Janeiro, habia un modesto establecimiento que ofrecia a l viajero posada y refrigerio. En su pintoresco lenguaje, los habitantes de la region llamaban 'quitandinha' a aquel albergue, situado al borde del camino. En el mismo sitio se yergue hoy un hotel majestuoso. Sin embargo, el progreso no ha destruido a la tradicion. y el n ombre, consagrado por el estilo popular, durante largos afios, perdura todavia: Hotel Termas Quitandinha. Pecos minutes despues de abandonar la m etropolis, comienza la carretera de h oy a trepar pc,r la sierra. Paulatinamente , en un crescendo de bellezas tel(u¡icas, se suceden los panoramas. Al principia surge aqui un cerro, otro alli. Despues progresivam ente, las olas de mont afias se extienden hasta el ho-
rizonte, ya emergiendo de las nubes bafiadas por el sol, ya entrevistas entre retazos de neblina, formando manchas oscuras. Siempre en ascenso, la carretera, excavada en el granito, ofrece moment o s em ocionantes cuando se contempla, en el imponente escenario, el trecho r ecorrido-faja rojiza que serpea en el abismo y se abre camino en los claros de la exhuberante vegetacion. :San Juan was First Sellled by Juan Ponce de leon, that Searched After the Youth Who Later Discovered Florida SAN JUAN is not only the ¡Oldest city flying the American flag but nowhere on American soil is there such a wealth of ancient and his~oric buildings as are crowed within its walls. The town within the wans with its six streets runing east and west is basically much the same today as it was hundreds of years ago. Many of the fine homes of wealthy Spaniards are now government offices; many have fallen on evil days, their dignity obscured by modern shop windows and neon signs. But the beauty of structure, the sturdy walls, the heavy ceiling beams, the marble and Spanish tiled floors and the vistas into spacious patios no ignominious usage can destroy. There is no executive mansian in the States as old and in as beautiful a setting as La Fortaleza where Puerto Rico's first elected governor, the Honorable Luis Munoz Marin, has his residence. The buildings was begun in 1533 and since 1693 La Fortaleza has been the official residence of the governors of Puerto Rico. Men still worship at the church of San Jose, men whose ancestors took refuge in times of danger behind its strong walls over four hundred years ago. San Juan was first settled by Juan Ponce de Leon, that searcher after the Fountain of Youth who later discovered Florida. He set sail in 1508 from Columbu's headquarters in Santo Domingo and started his first settlement in the rich meadows of Caparra across San Juan Bay. Eleven years later, in 1519, the colony noved to the little island, two and a half miles long by half a mile wide, the present site of San Juan. By 1529 the colony was thriving. These was the Domini-

It is the terminal point for the buses. To the east the city wall once stood, where the Y. M.C.A. now is. There was a city gate here, known as the Puerta de Tierra. To the northeast is the massive San Cristobal, to the south is the Ta pia Municipal Theatre. newly restored and reopened. In the old days as in present time companies were imported from Spa in to play here. e San Cristobal (St. Christopher) was started in 1631 when repeated breaching of the land
fortifications convinced Spain another fort was n ecessary. There are several legends attached to it; among them, one concerning La Garita del Diablo (the Devil's Sentry Box) from which the sentry is supposed to have been spirited by the Devil; another, the miraculous painting of San Cristobal over the old cistern which is credited with having kept the cistern filled in the time of drought. The strong outworks called El Aba nico (the fan) are well wor th seeing. Also see t h e Santa Barbara section which con sists of tunnels, corridors and strong room s of the stor age of ordnance and ammunition. Continuation from pages 39) ved) not proven underground passages once connected San Cristobal with El Morro and La Fortaleza. e Alcaldia (visitors welcome) , the City Hall on the Plaza Baldorioty, is a fine example of Spanish architecture of the 17th century. Finished in 1604, it has a fine patio. On the second floor is a state chamber (notice the ceremonial maces.) To the west of the Plaza is the Intendencia of Treasury, built in the middle of the 19th century. 8 Cathedral of San Juan Bautista (visitors welcome) was originally built of wood and thatch in 1519. It was badly damaged by the hurricane of 1527 and in 1549 it was rebuilt of more durable material. In 1625 the Dutch occupied the city and destroyed much of it.
Rebuilt in 1646 and practically rebuilt again in 1867 after an earthquake, it has survived storm, enemy and earthquake. The Island's first bishop became General Inquisitor of the Indies. The Inquisition is supposed to have taken place in the Cathedral. Bells date from the seventeenh century. The Earl of Cumberland stole both the original bells and the organ in 1598. Ponce de Leon is buried here. e San Jose (visitors welcome) was begun about 1530. It is the oldest on U. S. soil. Originally called Santo Tomas de Aquino, it mas the church of the Dominican monastery, which is just behind it (now headquarters of the U.S. Army). The church is very little changed form the days when the family of Ponce de Leon warshipped there. The presbytery was built by the
grandson of Ponce de Leon. Ponce de Leon's body rested here form 1559 until 1909 when it was moved to the Cathedral. A picture, "Our Lady of Belen", in an antique frame, is said to have been brought from Spain and to have been in the church since its beginning; also the "Christ of the Ponce's", a crucifix ordered from Spain by Juan Ponce de Leon for his family. The ship carrying it was lost with all aboard and only this crucifix was washed ashore. A granddaughter of Ponde de Leon presented it to the church. In front of the church in the plaza a statue of Ponce de Le6n cast from cannon captured from the British in 1797. It points toward Caparra, the original settlement. San Juan was first settled I I I (Continuation on pages 37) pel of Santo Cristo. Before you leave San Jose look well at the heavily buttressed house on your left. That's where the¡ workmen lived while they were building Ponce de Leon's residence. the Casa Blanca, in 1523. Casa Blanca is now the residence of the Commanding General of the Antilles Forces of the U.S. Army. As you wander downhill from San Jose on your right you will pass first the Bishop's Mansion, occupied by Bishops of Puerto Rico since 1733. In the next
block is the old convent seminary. To the left is the Cathedral of San Juan, the final resting place of Ponce de Leon. In front of the Cathedral is the oldest square in town, the Plazuela de las Monjas. Look across the square and down the Caleta de San Juan to the San Juan Gate. This is the only remaining city gate. Here the new governor's landed from Spain to be received with great pomp and pageantry and escqtted up the hill to the Cathedral. There they gave thanks for a safe vo-
yage and received the blessing of the church before proceeding to La Fortaleza to take office. Stroll along Calle Fortaleza, other street in this section and along Calle de la Luna or any keep your eyes open. Old courtyards, Spanish tiled floors, blue glazed paving blocks t h a t crossed the ocean as ballast in Spanish ships and a friendly and interested people are waiting for you. With a smile for a calling card you are welcome anywhere in San Juan.
