parents, Dear Transition Our First unit of inquiry this year is called “Give and Take”. In this letter you will find information regarding this unit as well as ways in which you can help your child at home. This unit started on August 13th and will last until September 17th 2012. Big Ideas: Feelings, Relationships, Problems and dilemmas
Communicators Children will learn that many problems we face are created due to poor communication. They will discuss what it means to be a good communicator and reflect on how to improve in this aspect Principled Students will explore their own principles and beliefs and how they can still be true to themselves when they listen and accept other people’s perspectives. Open Minded Students will explore how people with a different perspective can also be right and how by listening to other people’s perspectives and points of view we are being open - minded
Ideas to help at home • Ta l k a b o u t y o u r f a m i l y, d i ff e re n t relationships and roles, how conflicts often arise within members of a family and ways in which you solve them. Discuss vocabulary like: communication, relationship, discussion, points of view, care, empathy, resolution, commitment. • Discuss with your child reasons behind rules and agreements and how these contribute to making a community peaceful and organised. • Provide books (“Stelaluna” by Anell Cannon, “Un cuervo diferente” by Edith Schreiber, magazines, brochures and pictures for children to create a collage of images that show different relationships • Provide your child with a variety of writing and drawing materials and encourage him/her to express emotions and feelings creatively using art, poetry, storytelling, puppetry, modeling, etc.
