In this letter you will find information regarding this unit as well as ways in which you can help your child at home. This unit will last from November 19th until January 18th. Ideas to help at home • Talk to your child about your family traditions and celebrations, particularly those that are special to you. Discuss vocabulary like: celebrations, traditions, identity, symbols. • Discuss with your child reasons behind family traditions (extended or close family). Talk to other members of your family (grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins) about the traditions they have. • Visit websites like: http://www.zuzu.org/ daze.html or http://kids.yahoo.com/ directory/Around-the-World/Holidays or http://www.grupoese.com.ni/2002/bm/ ed71/mundo71.htm to find out about ways in which other cultures celebrate their holidays and traditions. • Encourage your child to reflect on the meaning of celebrations. • Provide books, magazines, brochures and pictures for children to find facts and interesting data about different holidays, traditions and the beliefs behind each one. • Talk to your child about the differences that exist between cultures and their traditions. Emphasize how respect, open mindedness, tolerance and empathy should be exercised when considering the beliefs and attitudes of others.
