UPDATED THESIS:
The moon pulls the tides of our oceans and emotions on earth and is said to be symbolic of our deepest and most hidden selves. Instead of studying how emotions are affected under the moon, we experiment with how they are affected on top of the moon through the idea of space and shape in relation to human reaction. Creating connections through carefully thought out gathering areas and living quarters will c(r)ater to human needs and provide necessary comfort so far from home.
NARRATIVE:
The Wayne Gibbous House is a temporary residency to 10 different earth regulars. Located on the Shackleton Crater, this two story space age house is the site of a brand new, ground breaking social experiment between 10 nationally diverse individuals who are all of different ethnicity and speak different languages. None of them have anything in common with each other and need to figure out how to communicate with a 10 person language barrier. We plan to house the residents for 3-5 months. The house itself is designed to cater to human emotion, circulation and sound movement throughout. The structure is two story, with the bottom floor being submerged underground but also open to the outside. We created the common area to be more communal but with options for total privacy if needed. There are several amenities focused on keeping our guests stimulated and healthy. With a mid century modern aesthetic, the house is warm and inviting inside to ease the distress of the language barrier and uncharted site on the moon.
The ten residents, each from very different cultural backgrounds must collaborate together to solve their communication problem. Our first resident is Magnolia from Denmark, she strictly speaks danish and is 23 years old. Next resident is 30 year old Francisco, he is from Chile and speaks only Spanish. Our next resident is going to be 25 year old Phuong from Vietnam who, yes, only speaks vietnamese. Following Phuong, we have Francesca from the United States. She is 24 and has never spoken a word of any language other than english. Next up is 21 year old Medha, from India. She has only ever spoken Hindi. After Medha, is George who is 26 and from Russia. He speaks only russian. Following George, is Elise. Elise is 27 from France and speaks french. Next is Faraji from Tanzania who is 23 and only speaks Swahili. Our following guest is going to be Ahmed from Persia who strictly speaks Arabic and is 25 years old. The final resident goes by the name of Dante and is a 28 years old from Italy. He speaks Italian. All of our residents were picked using a set of guidelines. We looked for people who are open minded, physically and mentally fit for the moon, people who were educated but not in communications, and ranging from 20-30 years old. We picked five men and five women to balance out the energy in the house.
When in the house, the residents will utilize their surroundings and provided amenities to find a harmonious balance of living all together. The language barrier provides opportunity for non-traditional forms of communication. A certain concept we are capitalizing on is music and how it relates and helps people find common ground. It is the unspoken language of the world and we plan to highlight and use this throughout the experiment. We want to make the 3-5 months as comfortable and conducive as we possibly can and are relaying that through our design. The 10 residents will live a separate life for 3-5 months. We plan to record this entire process and take note of certain human tendencies to figure out how we can communicate better even in the face of obstacles and adversity.
The purpose of our experiment is to gather and guide 10 residents through our site on the moon. The moon is a daunting and mysterious place and we plan to design our structure around catering to emotion and assisting in natural human connection and communication. If our experiment deems successful, and our residents find harmony, The Wayne Gibbous house will begin to become a hot spot for human social studies for years to come.
