Welcome! On Living Together The focus of the Osthang Project is the search for new open, social spaces and an alternative planning and building practice. Over the last twenty years the importance of public spaces as locations for the exchange of goods and information has decreased. However, sociocultural and economic changes have led to new demands and possibilities of using, but also appropriating public spaces. Simultaneously more and more groups of young architects work not only as designers in their offices, but also build prototypes and parts of their interior designs and buildings. In these projects, planning, researching, participating, designing and debating are combined into an 1:1 experiment, which offers abundance and an enormous amount of freedom that usually gets lost in conventional planning structures and building processes. In the Osthang Project, this discourse on new urban practices, will be overlaid on location, with the design-and-build projects led by the invited tutors. Taking place in Darmstadt on an abandoned plot of land, within the famous former Artists Colony „Mathildenhöhe“ and inspired by the freely developed designs of a century ago, the discourse will take the form of an in becoming utopian campus for July and August 2014.

The 27th of July the Campus will be open to the public and the program of the Thinking Together will start. Thinking Together is a transdisciplinary platform for political imagination. “Political” because it is concerned with the way in which we organize the spaces, practices and lives that we share, locally as well as globally. “Imagination” because it is aimed at forming new ideas and imaginaries about how to do so. The main theory-related format of the Osthang Project is thus focused on rethinking future modes of living together in a pluricentric world. The project is set up as a public forum composed of informal seminars, lectures, discussions, film screenings, performances and cooking. International guests from the fields of political theory, economics, social sciences, anthropology, philosophy, management studies, computer science as well as activism, architecture, arts and design are invited to connect their different knowledges and practices towards future Imaginaries of Living Together.

The symposium: „The City as a Sphere for Action“ organised on 24th and 25th of July brings the discussion to a broader context by debating on the questions of how to generate sustainable change for our cities from this emancipatory movement? How can we achieve conjunction with our formal planning platform and develop a process-oriented concept of planning? 4

Radio Station

The Osthang Radio will be a tool to trace the interconnection between the different parts involved in the Osthang Project. It will offer the way to intervene on a verbal and sound level in response to the situation of the Summer School and more. Keep it in mind and if you like, think about interventions, words, sounds, readings and story tellings connected to the issue of Living Together, that you would like to transmit during the project.

Osthang Presse Osthang Presse will be a weekly folded poster, each number designed by a different author. One of them will be realized by the artist Ruth Sacks with the collaboration of a group of students of the summer school involved in a workshop that will explore the idea of Utopian design and the Total Artwork

OSTHANG SYMPOSIUM // The city as a sphere for action

Thursday 24.7.

new collective spaces // process based participatory planning strategies

New collective spaces // process based participatory planning strategies The first day of the Symposium focuses on new emanzipatory urban practices in relation to the city and city planning. We want to engage all participants in this discourse emphasizing the following questions: Are we still able to imagine a better future society, better places and better cities? What is the meaning of public space for our imagination of how we want to live together in our societies? Which are the methods to generate real participation and include different user groups into development of our common spaces. How can we plan in open processes? How can we integrate bottom up strategies into the administrative and political realities of our cities. Self build city // experimental building practice More and more groups of young architects work not only as designers in their offices, but also build prototypes and parts of their interior designs and buildings. In these projects, planning, researching, participating, designing and debating are combined into an 1:1 experiment, which offers abundance and an enormous amount of freedom that usually gets lost in conventional planning structures and building processes. To be present – on location – and to be able to react to existing or developing social and architectural conditions is a component of their work. Participation and building in temporary communities creates the foundation for a new a culture of planning. The architects and planners also find themselves in the role of mediators between the various local interest groups and between levels of urban planning. Their presence on location can reveal potential, move processes along and realize appropriation activities. Empty buildings, urban wasteland and dead traffic nodes become nodes of action. The following questions should be discussed in this section: How do we see the Osthang Project in relation to the historical “Mathildenhöhe Artist Colony”. What are the objectives and methods of the build and design movement? Is it essential for these socially engaged projects that the architects are present on site? Does the involvement of the user and the architect in the active building process lead to another architecture? How can this kind of open building processes be applied to more long term and large-scale projects? 14
