Can You Save Money on Utilities by Switching to Energy Efficient Bulbs?

Living on a teacher’s salary can be quite grim sometimes to be honest, and many months we are pinching every single penny we can. Since my husband became a teacher we’ve learned to reuse, recycle, go generic, buy used, and anything else we can possibly do to save money. I know MANY if not most of you are in the same situation! But sometimes you have to invest in order to save money. After having my son and going through the process of understanding his Asperger’s and sensory disorder issues, we have also spent the last few years “going green” as a healthier approach for our family. So when I was offered the opportunity to switch all of the light bulbs in my house from whatever we are using now to GE Energy Efficient light bulbs my husband and I were ALL over it! We have always wanted to switch to energy efficient bulbs but, to be honest, the upfront cost can be a bit daunting on a tight budget! So I invite you to join me on our journey the next month to see if our new energy efficient bulbs will really make a difference or not in our utilities bill!

Bye-Bye Incandescents, Hello CFLs While the move from incandescent to CFLs is voluntary at this time, the government has mandated the phasing out of incandescent bulbs. I hope that as production of incandescent bulbs ceases, light bulb manufacturers will work on solving the dimmable issue with a more affordable option. I am excited to see the energy savings that our whole house conversion will mean for our family. I will follow up next month with another post to compare my bill from last year at this time with this year’s bill to track those savings. I will also share tips on using CFL bulbs. Say good bye to our incandescent light bulbs‌

Our Light Bulbs are Turning Green!

Before the switch, anytime I bought light bulbs I got the GE Reveal. I liked the crisper light and didn’t mind to pay a bit more for those bulbs. My husband especially had it in his mind that it would cost a fortune to replace all of the light bulbs in our house to the GE Energy Smart bulbs. It might have a few years ago, but it seems that these Energy Smart bulbs have really dropped in price and are extremely affordable – especially when you factor in how long they last AND how much money they’ll save you on your energy bill! I am so excited that all of our light bulbs are green now – and I can’t wait to start seeing more green in our bank account, thanks to lower energy bills!

The Secret to Big Savings on Your Energy Bills I have been meaning to learn more about the new energy efficient light bulbs for awhile now – but as a busy mom, my list of things to do is always much longer than the time I have to do them. So when I had the chance to be a part of this energy smart challenge, I knew it was the perfect time to make a change. But – how do I figure out which bulbs are the right ones for me when there is this HUGE aisle filled with so many choices? I was hoping that there would be a sign or some flyers, but no luck. So it’s a good thing that I’m always a smart shopper, and prepared ahead of time! I downloaded the free LightSmart app before I shopped, and this thing is pretty awesome at helping you figure out the perfect picks to lighten your home. So helpful.

Changing Light Bulbs Once we got home from buying new energy efficient light bulbs to replace all the ones we had in the house, we began changing light bulbs. Ironically, when we left to go shop we went to turn on the outdoor light and it was blown. It reminded us that we needed to grab one for out there as well. It was the first bulb replaced when we got home, and then we went inside to start from the 1st floor up. The easiest light to change was the kitchen light over the sink so we started there. After finishing up downstairs, we headed to our bedroom and were curious to see how the light bulbs changed the lighting of the room. My husband said, “You realize it is probably going to not be as bright.” Ok, I guess we’ll see. Yeah, he was completely wrong! Even though the bulbs are only 11 watts they give off a powerful glow! The same held true for the six light bulbs we changed out over our bathroom sinks. The difference in lighting was incredible and I am anxious to see how they help save in energy costs over the next month.

Light Bulbs 101: What You Don’t Know May Be Costing You Money! I thought we had pretty much switched all of our lights to CFLs as Sean jumped on the CFL bandwagon years ago – my frugal guy! But when I was counting bulbs, I realized that we had an old light fixture in our guest bath that still used the incandescent bulb. We could have found round CFL bulbs but I’m using this as an excuse – time to change that puppy! We went to Walmart and found a great fixture for only $30! Instead of (4) 60 watt incandescents, we now have (3) CFLs.

click

f o r m o r es from thi blogger

According to the lighting calculator, if we switched (4) bulbs, we would save $26/year. So if my math is correct, by going to 3, we are saving almost $32/year. At least. More or less. Okay, I’m not really sure, but it’s a lot. And pays for the new fixture!

Are Energy Efficient Light Bulbs Worth It? Incandescent < CFL < LED I wouldn’t be a frugal person if I told you that you had to run to the store {right now-this instant-what are you waiting for} and buy these bulbs. A frugal person waits and strikes when the coupon and sale stars align. That is exactly what we did and not once have we paid full price for a light bulb. We are actually in the process of recycling all of our CFL bulbs for LED bulbs because those are EVEN BETTER! You can reference this sale that I posted for Walmart last week and you can also print out this $2 coupon! Keeping with my main tip of swapping your bulbs over time, I am here to tell you that you should start right now if you are looking to maximize the sale cycles! By 2014 all light bulbs that don’t meet the 30% efficiency minimum standard will be phased out. So in order to not be caught with your pants around your ankles you should get started. Technology really has come a long way with light bulbs and this legislation is really for the greater good of our pocketbooks.

A Bright New World

When I decided we were going to reduce our energy consumption even more, I flitted through ideas to find new ways to save. Raise the thermostat in summer and lower it in winter? Check. Plant shade around our air conditioning unit? Check. Clean out the dryer lint filter after each use? Check. Change to an energy efficient light bulb? Wait. Nope, not doing that one. I’d been purchasing incandescent light bulbs because they had an initial low cost. Plus, to be honest, I was somewhat put off by the curly shape of the energy efficient bulbs. When I read that incandescent bulbs were being phased out in 2012, I decided to do some research on the newer CFL and LED bulbs at GElighting.com. I used their savings calculator to determine how much money I would save if I replaced all my bulbs with their Energy Smart products.

23

Patricia Cook~frugalfamilytree.com

Saving Energy and Money By Switching To GE Energy Efficient Light Bulbs I have been very concerned about the rising costs of my electricity bills in the last few years. They get higher every year, and I finally felt it was time to do something about it. How could I use less energy and save money at the same time? I found out that switching my old light bulbs to GE Energy Efficient bulbs would make an impact on my electric bill, and that I could start saving money right away! So I went to Walmart to buy my new GE light bulbs. GE Energy Smart Bright From the Start bulbs are not like the old fluorescent lighting. New GE Hybrid Technology allows these bulbs to achieve full brightness and light the instant you turn them on. They use 75% less energy than regular bulbs and are guaranteed to last 5 years. That impressed me. And how many times have you had to pull out a ladder or chair to change a bulb on the ceiling? You certainly will be changing your bulbs far less frequently with these!

Our Kitchen Lighting Makeover I prefer Reveal because the light is so clean. It looks better in pictures, too. Most photos taken indoors at night have a yellow color cast that needs removed in editing. Annoying. The graphic on the left should explain why I love Reveal bulbs. My husband and I brainstormed what else we should do in our kitchen. Although improving the quality of light was a good start, we still needed more lighting. Option #1 included installing four additional recessed can lights and a drop-down pendant light over the kitchen sink. Option #2 involved hanging a ceiling fan with lights. I asked friends on Facebook and got favorable responses from those who have kitchen ceiling fans. Maybe I wouldn’t avoid using the oven in the summer (or bring in a fan from another room) with more air circulation. When my husband said that Option #2 required less work and we found a fan we liked for $60, the decision was easy.

New Lamp, New Lights, New Room! I’m sure by now you know that we’re a fairly “green” family and we like our products to be eco-friendly as often as possible. We’ve been on the energy-efficient light bulb bandwagon for a long time now. Our incandescent bulbs were replaced with compact fluorescent light bulbs as soon as possible. I have Steve to thank for that – he’s always been on top of that kind of thing. He’s the light-bulb buyer in this house!

I knew I wanted energy efficient CFLs, some for a ceiling fan (that weren’t ugly), and one for a lamp to make a more cozy environment. Beyond that information, I wasn’t sure exactly how many lumens I wanted… how bright would 500 lumens be? 800? 1200? AH! There was a package that said “ceiling fan” on it (perfect!), but another box with less lumens had a picture of a ceiling fan on it… so there I was all confused again. Finally I found a package that had a chart on it that helped me out.

GE {Lighting} Room Makeover

I LOVE the new GE Lighting in our kitchen! We really should have done this a long time ago! I also love that we will be saving money in the long run by using energy efficient light bulbs. Now if I can just get my kiddos to remember to turn their lights off when they leave a room and to close the door when they go outside we’d be doing even better! Winking smile!

I Love Lamps and GE Lighting!!!

A little decor and my lighting quick fix made all of the difference. I mean seriously!!!! Much much more relaxing and inviting right?! Not perfect by any means…. BUT BETTER! I mean come on… it can only be so good when you have painted plywood as your flooring… right?! But at this point I am just happy that there isn’t wallpaper to peel! I now realize that I need a “space” that feels like home while working on these renovations! I have a feeling I will be using my studio bedroom as a living space MUCH MORE from here on out when I need a break from all of the house projects!

GE Energy Efficient Lighting Creates A Whole New Look I wanted to work on the chandelier hanging above our dining room table. It uses the 60 watt candelabra bulbs and a standard 75 watt bulb. That is a lot of energy. I wanted a comfortable inviting light for the dining room, so I learned from the back of the package I would want to buy a 13 W. I also learned that by replacing six 60 Watt bulbs that were there, I would be saving $50.22 a year on one lighting fixture and $275 over the life of one bulb. I love the way the lighting is. It just looks brighter and without the yellow glow which used to drive me crazy when I took food pictures. Look how dark the picture looks before I changed the lights. Isn’t it amazing how the room looks lighter when I just changed the bulbs. Now that my lighting has changed, I can start taking beautiful pictures without hours of editing!

A Brighter Bedroom

During the day, our bedroom can be quite dark without the curtains open. I normally keep the large curtains closed because that side of the house faces the sun and lets in A LOT of heat – which is very bad for my cooling costs! Whenever I try to do anything in the bedroom during the day, I find myself tired and sleepy‌the combination of the low light level and my soft blue walls is so relaxing that it makes me want to take a nap! After setting up the new lamp, I found that the room is much more bright on that side of the bedroom and I can actually go in there and fold laundry or read a book and not end up taking a nap!

GE Lighting Home Makeover Updating a Bedroom Before I started this project, I assumed all energy efficient bulbs were the unattractive spiral kind. I’m sure you know the ones I am talking about. Although I knew the right thing to do was to use these bulbs, I just couldn’t bring myself to buy them. They are ugly. Very ugly. Little did I know that there are attractive energy efficient bulbs out there, and what a difference they make! GE Energy Efficient soft white bulbs are a great alternative to the traditional incandescent bulbs, and by using these, you can save up to 28%, without sacrificing the look of the bulbs we’ve grown to know and love. Lighting plays such a huge part in the ambiance of a room, and a bedroom of all places is supposed to be inviting. It is the one room you should always be able to go to for calm and quiet. When bright lights are used in a bedroom, it isn’t relaxing at all. I am guilty of this, but I finally changed it!

A Lighting Makeover With both lights now up, we could see a huge difference in the feel of the room. The lights were neither blinding nor too dim. It was nice to be able to sit in our living room with the ceiling fan AND ceiling fan light on and enjoy our evening. The GE Energy Smart CFL bulbs gave off a nice warm glow; not an orange-yellow like some, but just warm. See the huge difference in the light and how it actually bounces off all the walls? The light reaches all the way to the floor. So much more useful!

Guest Room Makeover {Lighting & Design} My interior design hero has to be Candice Olson. Her work is simply stunning, and if you’ve watched every single episode of her show as I have, you’d know one thing. She loves lighting. In all of her designs, she focuses a huge amount of time and effort on lighting. She will rip out ceilings, spend half the budget on a chandelier, etc. We have a guest room in our home that gets used maybe 5 times a year. Every time we have guests, all we do is wash the linens and tell them to make themselves at home. It’s about time we showed our guest room a little TLC. Now, unlike many of my makeovers, I didn’t buy a ton of accessories or paint any walls. I simply focused on the foundation of a good room—lighting.

Amazing Lighting Makeover with GE Reveal CFL’s! After visiting the GE Lighting website I knew that I wanted to get GE Reveal CFL bulbs. Reveal CFL’s last up to eight times as long as incandescent bulbs and use 75% less energy. The Reveal lights also provide pleasing light that enhances patterns and colors! We ended up getting two packages of the GE Reveal CFL light-bulbs to replace the lamp lights and also use with our new lamp. On the package it says that these are as bright as a 100 watt bulb, but use only 26 watts worth of energy! You can see the rest of my shopping trip on google plus! So how did it turn out? Clearly, the lighting transformation is amazing! The lighting is so beautiful now. I have found myself being drawn to this room more often just to sit and read or relax than I did before. It’s amazing how lights can make all the difference in a room. The light that these bulbs emit is so clean and bright. It’s not too yellow like the others that we had.

A Lighting Makeover For The Girls

Last week, Tate and I trekked off to Walmart on a fan and light bulb mission. We looked at all of the GE Energy Smart light bulbs ...and the GE Reveal bulbs. I even pondered switching to LED lighting but I need to do a bit more research on that first. The final light bulb decision was made once I found a fan {on clearance!} that was perfect for an idea I had. I came home with GE Energy Smart bulbs for the new fixture. The packaging on these light bulbs contains some great information about savings but GE also has a neat energy savings calculator on their website. The calculator told me that by replacing the three bulbs in my old fan with Energy Smart CFL’s, I’d save $19.71 a year and $108 over the life of the bulbs. Pretty good, huh? You can calculate the savings for your house too!

GE Light Fantastic Makeover Are You Ready for the Changes to Come? With the flip of a switch, we created a beautiful new atmosphere while eliminating wasted electricity. By opting to embrace the new technology of compact fluorescent bulbs, I will use up to 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs…so they say. I must admit I was sad to learn that within the next few years incandescent bulbs will be phased out. Did you know that 100-watt bulbs are being phased out during 2012 by the U.S. Government? Did you know that 75-watt and 60-watt bulbs are being phased out over the next two years? I was also more than a little skeptical that I would be able to see as well with the new CFLs as I have had some not so good results with fluorescent lighting in the past. The room after the makeover by night…so warm and inviting…we will have many happy moments to share with each other, our family and our friends here…thank you GE!!!

Food Photography Kitchen Makeover with GE Smart Energy Lighting I decided it’s time to give my workspace (also known as my kitchen) a lighting makeover. It was time to bring outdoor quality lighting into my kitchen that allows me the versatility to work, photograph and videotape whenever I want. Being energy efficient was also a major factor in my makeover decisions. With some help from GE Energy Smart’s Bright From The Start CFL, I found that I can achieve better lighting with their hybrid halogen, and save on my power bill. GE Energy Smart bulbs last 8 times longer and use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs.

Living Room Lighting Makeover In our living room we have 1 table lamp and 1 floor lamp. It is always too dark. The table lamp used to have a matching floor lamp but one of our kids tipped it over and the glass shattered. We used to have matching table lamps but they were both broken during pillow fights and balls being tossed in the house. So, it was definitely time for a living room lighting makeover. Now doesn’t that look better? It is so much brighter! I cleaned up, added a cream throw and pillow to the couch and of course added new lamps with energy efficient bulbs! Adding new lighting to a room and new bulbs made the atmosphere change for the better. It brightens things up and made the room more inviting. Everyone in the family commented on the lighting makeover I did and they all love how it looks! We already spend a lot of time in our living room so that will not change but now we will be able to see better.

New Ways To Boost My Family’s Eco Footprint and Save Money

Not only did our local Sam’s Club offer a wide selection of GE energy efficient bulbs, but they offered every specialty bulb we would require to completely convert our home’s lighting for the green! With a number of energy wasting fixtures, such as the (shudder) 80’s style large globe fixtures in the master bath and kid’s bathroom on the hit list for replacement in the near future, we decided converting the dining room chandelier bulbs would be a great place to start. Sam’s offered GE halogen candle style bulbs, as well as energy smart LED bulbs. We decided to purchase the LEDs, despite the larger price tag, as they were the greenest option.

I Had a GE Light Bulb Moment! Did changing the light bulbs have any effect on my photos or the lighting in the bathroom? The first thing I did was switch out two light bulbs in the lights above the mirror, the main lighting in my bathroom. I wanted to determine if I could see a difference in the light bulbs next to each other. Without a doubt there is a difference between the two types of bulbs. Both sets of bulbs are GE Energy bulbs. However the set on the left side is soft white while the set on the right is daylight. So the true test for me was how would my photos turn out. Would I notice a difference? I think the GE Energy Smart Daylight passed with “flying colors lights. I LOVE the new lighting in my bathroom. It feels, for a lack of a better word, like daylight. It feels clean and crisp when I walk in. With the new lighting, when I put my makeup on in the morning I feel it is more the true color.

Sentimental Lamp Tutorial I had an ugly lamp in my bedroom, on my bedside table. Given that the phone lives there, and a basket with my must-read books, and whatever assorted items kids bring in, I realized that the lamp had to go. I wasn’t turning it on and it was too big for the space, and…well, it was a free lamp that I hated. I decided to let my guilt go, donate the lamp (another man’s trash, right?) and set out to find an adorable SMALL lamp that I could use for middle of the night reading. I went to Walmart last and actually found an adorable little lamp, but it was kind of…boring. It needed something. I decided to bring the lamp home and take a few days to think about what I’d do with it.

DIY Painted Lamp Slowly but surely we are knocking things off our to-do list. Last Summer, Doug and I hit a few garage sales, and one of our finds was a matching set of lamps. They were in good condition, so we snatched them up for $10 for the pair {talking the seller down of course} and promptly put them in the basement and added them to our list of DIY projects. So when GE Lighting and Collective Bias contacted us about using their products in a project, we knew right away we wanted to get the DIY Painted Lamps done. GE Lighting is leading the way with energy efficient alternatives to old style incandescent light bulbs. And what a great way to update the lights we use in our home and save money at the same time. By replacing just three 100 watt bulbs with their equivalent CFL bulbs we can save over $32.00 per year.

Home DIY: Ceiling Fan Makeover I’ve wanted to buy a new ceiling fan since we started our master bedroom remodel. The current fan is probably 20 years old and it shows it; but it’s a good quality fan and it works well so I hate to just dump it because it’s out of style. Still, looking up at the gold fixture made me think about making it over with some spray paint, so this weekend I finally went shopping to do a quick and easy light makeover. So my first stop was to find energy efficient bulbs to fit. I picked up a GE Energy Smart Upgrade kit – these new bulbs replace 3 regular bulbs and are expected to last 6 years! The package noted that I should save up to $29 for each of the bulbs. Just by changing out the light bulbs in our bedroom ceiling fan for newer energy efficient bulbs, we’ll see a savings the first year! And as we replace more standard bulbs around the house the savings grow!
