ED’s LETTERSE Dear Friends, Welcome to the first issue of Volume 2, The Illusion issue - You will notice many changes in this issue, along with many more to come as we expand our creative range and expression. There were many adventures creating this issue, with one shoot in particular challenging us in every way possible. ‘A Dead Sea’ is not only a triumph visually, but testament to our resolve; Everything started out inauspiciously, after a two hour drive scored with a delightful by a 50’s era sound track, and punctuated with giggles and banter in heavily accented Italio-English, we were on our way the California Riviera: Our scouting trip to the Salton Sea provoked some interesting conversation as the locals spoke of the days when Jerry Lee Lewis and the Beach Boys would come to dance the night away at the The Yacht Club’s Commodore Room; We were ready to capture that glory. Nothing, however is quite what it seems and, almost immediately, we found ourselves subjected to the fickle hand of fate. The beach house we rented as our home-base for the day of the shoot was securely locked upon our arrival and every one of us found out that no matter how many times we had watched The Italian Job, we had no idea how to pick a lock. © Collective Magazine 2011

Similarly, we then realised the futility of having a model do his best Spiderman impression onto an equally secure roof.

Three hours after call time, complete with complimentary heat stroke, we were ready to begin. After walking over / through thousands of dead Tilapia, the desert winds claimed our lights calling the headlights of Jeeps to set, we had make-up melting off the models faces, and we discovered countless vintage records that tragically had been destroyed by the salt - and these are just the printable cliff notes - Through all of this and with good humour we kept ourselves motivated and creatively fuelled and came away with a holiday season’s worth of story material… buy one of us a drink and you may just hear the good bits!

In 110 degree heat. In the desert. It might go without saying that we were unable to throw (or admittedly, lift) the 2.5 gallon water containers we had very sensibly brought along up to him in order to keep him hydrated. In a move worthy of the Eagle Scouts, we did realise that we could throw grapes… and as we started the search for our very own Rain Man to assess just how may grapes we would need, the locals / spectators turned up to help. Admittedly, they were drunk, but helpful none the less as they circumvented the house security with a claw hammer - albeit only after nobly asking ‘Granma’ - and to this day I swear I could hear duelling banjos straining in the background…

HARRY FELLOWS ANTHONY ELGORT A world traveller and visionary creator of images, Anthony Elgort has been a resident of Los Angeles for only just over a year, but he has already made his mark. Elgort’s groundbreaking work ranges from travel to the snowy mountains of Bulgaria in the cold winter, to finding a sculptural nude beneath the waters of Cape Cod. In his dynamic portraits, he connects with and brings out the personality beneath, seeking the miraculous, the strong, and the visually arresting. In his remarkable fashion pictures, he strips back the layers to find something elusive and sophisticated, sexy in the truest sense soulful, alive, edgy and beautiful.

Photographer Harry Fellows was born in Washington, D.C. and received his first camera at age 14. His first roll of pictures was of nudes of his girlfriend, and the power of what the camera could capture immediately inspired him. Harry is continually fascinated with the form and classical beauty of the human body, and more importantly, by society’s interpretation of what is and isn’t acceptable in sexuality. Harry sees the importance of pushing people’s buttons and he is constantly trying to achieve the delicate balance of putting viewers into an unusual and uncomfortable place while still creating work that is commercially viable. Above all, Fellows strives to create aesthetically pleasing images that explore the darker side of beauty, nature, and sensuality. He is drawn to fashion because of the beautiful forms that designers create and the way in which the fashion world often embraces the odd, unusual, and uglier side of beauty. The music industry, opera, and Greek mythology are among Harry’s current influences. Harry has recently been shooting short films and hopes to develop this interest in film making in the future. Harry currently resides in Brooklyn, New York with his wife Catherine.

lexi swain Makeup artist Alexis (Lexi) Swain feels privileged to have collaborated with many renowned photographers, directors and designers in the past decade. Celebrity clients include Ringo Starr, Audrina Patridge, and super model, Bar Rafaeli. She has worked in multiple genres including TV, music videos, ads and editorial. A World Arts and Cultures Major from UCLA and 2003 graduate of Make-Up Designory, Lexi has spent the last 9 years perfecting her craft. Her creative eye and attention to detail allow her to virtually transform the face, truly evolving makeup into an artform. She currently resides in Los Angeles.
