EDITOR’S LETTER
Editor’s Letter Today is no different than any other.
Today conflict will arise, creating tension, and with it the opportunity for something great to be discovered.
In the eye of conflict a fantasy has the opportunity to show its face. Living in fantasy can be a bit like living as a drug addict; hooked on what’s not real, living a pseudo-reality created in ones own mind. It’s so common that indulging fantasies like a drug is culturally universal, even human nature. But after a conflict is resolved, the mask of fantasy is removed and reality sets in. This is good. Reality is good. Reality is better than fantasy; because reality is real. What we present to you in this issue, the Conflict Issue, straddles the line between fantasy and reality with suspension of disbelief rooted at the bookends to blur the line. Have fun. Yours, Eryka Clayton xox

Stephanie Tricola was born in Brooklyn, and currently lives in NYC, with Mark, Luna and Nova. She’s worked in the fashion industry for over a decade, for designers such as Sonia Rykiel, Oscar de la Renta, Max Mara, and Ralph Lauren, as well as Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. With a background in fashion and a passion for art, styling came naturally to Stephanie. Styling is her outlet for artistic expression. Her drive, and energy come through on every project.
Stephanie Tricola
Ise White’s fashion career began when she started designing sets and costumes for Amber Stolec was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Strings of lucite beads from her Aunt, a 1960’s owl necklace from her Grandma, and a trip to the fabric store with another Aunt to buy materials to sew doll clothes are what Amber describes as her favorite childhood gifts. Most cherished of all, her mother taught her to draw and paint. Her fashion career began at Calvin Klein and InStyle magazine. Following, she set off on her own as a stylist. She credits the strong, creative women in her family for influencing her perception of beauty, fashion and art. She currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.
performance art projects. She started her own costume company after graduating with a BFA in painting and art history. She exhibited at major museums and galleries before moving to New York to get a masters in figurative painting and drawing. After moving to New York, Ise fell into styling through friends in the fashion industry and soon thereafter was featured in major magazines like L’Officiel, Vogue España, and L’Uomo Vogue. Retail Ad & Design featured Ise as an “upcoming talent to watch for.” Before long, she was styling major ad campaigns for Olympus, Fashion Week, Pantene, Coors Light, Coca Cola, and others. Ise spent her childhood living a nomadic lifestyle traveling throughout Europe and Asia, which influences her eclectic tastes. She continues to travel frequently for styling, and draws inspiration from her environments, music, diverse cultures, and art.

JOSH PETKER
Joshua Petker is understandably tired. Like most artists, he keeps odd hours; when one finds themselves dedicated to a life of creativity, somehow minutes become hours, and hours can turn into days – only to be realized when there’s a quick glance up at the clock or a pang of hunger. For Petker though, his sleepless nights don’t just revolve around his painting – he’s also a new father to 4 month old Isabelle. This fall, Petker will show his paintings in not one but two major art fairs – the first in Los Angeles at Pulse in October 2011, followed by Moniker in London in mid-December; then there’s a big solo show in 2012 at LeBasse Projects in Culver City. In between daddy duty, Petker has been spending the majority of his time at the easel delivering his own concoction of raw romanticism fused with pop art sensibilities. “Most of my work is about the idea of identity,” says the artist. “I tend to create my work from a romantic longing for meaning.”

That notion of romanticism is omnipresent in all of the artist’s work; with his choices of vibrant reds, blues and yellows, it’s obvious he’s in the midst of a torrid love affair with color. Take his painting “I Miss Missing You” from his series entitled “We’re Not As Colorful As We Think We Are.” In this series, he attempts to balance figures between colorful abstraction and stark negative space without perspective, his heroine in ghostly white dotted with a hint of colorful seemingly floating across an oversaturated, undulating landscape of blue and red hues. The painting is playful yet somewhat sad in its stark reality; we all need someone in our lives, and loneliness – despite our colorful surroundings and the activity going on around us - can still manage to be a beautiful – albeit solitary – place. The native So Cal painter is a born artist - literally. He didn’t go to art school (he studied history and art history) and eventually ended up on the street – not in a homeless way but rather, an artistic one, creating graffiti – it is here where his colorful style emerged. “I didn't realize I was an artist until my early 20s but I do think one is born this way. I think constantly and solve my problems by painting or writing. I have had other jobs in my life but I was never as good at those jobs as I am at being an artist. This is what I do.”

JOSH PETKER
Petker’s favorite artists and influence include the likes of Francis Picabia, Martial Raysse, Jacques Villegle, Pablo Picasso, Joan Mitchell, and Mark Rothko – certainly a variegated mélange of artistic styles – but in viewing Petker’s work, Raysse, seems to have had the most influence. Raysse was part of the Nouveaux Realistes, a group of artists that included the aforementioned Frenchman as well as Yves Klein. While their goal was to move away from abstract expressionism and more toward subjective expressionism, Petker definitely has the itch to lean toward the former. “I’m very interested in abstraction and have begun to incorporate areas of abstraction into my work. I read a lot of history and my interest [in this] inspires my work.” In his last show at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City entitled “Celluloid Constellations” that love of history was written all over his

subjects faces - literally. He chose some of the biggest – and most notorious – faces of 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s Hollywood – from the tragic Dorothy Dandridge to the scorned Fatty Arbuckle. His subjects - like his palette are indeed a colorful lot. Of course with that fascination of history, comes the fascination of artists from days gone by. Given the chance, who would Joshua Petker relish meeting? “I would like to paint Austrian landscapes with Klimt,” he muses. “Then I’d love to discuss the painting of women with de Kooning.” But what about just hanging with an artist – no art talk, just fun? “Well, I’d love to take Van Gogh on a tour of Los Angeles.”
