EDITORs LETTER

Dear Collective, I write to you today in hopes that we can all wake up; not just for a moment but for life. About a hundred years ago G.K. Chesterton realized that we need to learn how to enjoy enjoyment before we can really enjoy art, invention, theatre, or games. I think he was right and I think we still do. The problem is, we know how to dissect every aspect of everything, and for some that may be enough enjoyment, but it is not enjoyment at its true meaning. “It is that faculty that is always slipping away from men; and it slips away faster and faster

in the modern mood of always looking for the latest thing. It matters nothing whether this takes a reactionary or a revolutionary form. It matters nothing whether it is a snobbish pursuit of the latest fashions and is called Capitalism, or a priggish pursuit of the latest fads and is called Socialism. It is equally true that the hurry of happiness is itself unhappy.” - Chesterton

participating in and why. My theory is, once we have clarity on our own intent and direction we may actually be able to recognize our authentic means of enjoyment instead of what we have been conditioned to “enjoy”. So in this issue we present to you images and stories of what is possible, and what we flat out know shouldn’t be. I look forward to hearing your reactions, your stories of dreams made into reality, and as a result, a rise in social consciousness.

Eryka xo

In the last century societies have progressed on many levels but in reality, maybe at the fault of human nature, we are at a standstill. What goes for enjoying enjoyment goes for learning how to learn, reading subtext of what we read, and realizing what is real and what is broken down to “no need to digest, just let it infuse into your conciousness” bits of information. We need to ask the questions that provide us with clarity on what we are

AWAKE

Awake Š Collective Magazine 2012

A concept we all casually understand in it’s simplest form to physically define our own consciousness, roused from the state of rest. Sleep.

There have been points in all our lives where we have had our perceptions opened to a cause, an issue, or a challenge in life that we previously did not perceive or understand, where our view of those around us, or perhaps even the world as a whole is definitively and irrevocably shifted, after which we change direction with enhanced vigor and vitality, with a clearer understanding of our place in the world and our mission to change it.

As with so much in life, there is a great deal more meaning derived once you scratch below the surface: To be awake, in readiness to interact with the world around you, to have entered the state of awareness, or to have been roused into action provokes imagery of true activism, action and a foreboding sense of imminent change.

Maybe you have had this moment in your life. Maybe you have had many. Maybe yours is yet to come... however far your journey has so far taken you, imagine what you would have seen from a different perspective.

In a baby picture that documents Nick Onken’s first encounter with photography, he’s holding a Kodak 110 Instamatic. Upside down. Not taking a photo. There comes a nice mystique when not researching the place you’re going before you go. I like going without expectations, which partially happened on this trip. One of the big reason’s I wanted to go to Tibet was the amazing travel portrait work of Phil Borges. I met him a while back and saw his book on the Tibetan Portrait, including the Dalai Lama. The Tibetan nomads were what appealed to me, and what I inspired me to want to shoot there. That said, my expectations upon traveling there were very different than what we found; due mostly to the areas we
