Dear Readers, From my airbnb home in Berlin I learned that light has the ability to make us see. I know this is fundamental and of course I already knew this, but in December 2012, thanks to Sebastian Hägerson, it really sunk in. He is a visionary forward thinker who was raised on the other side of the white noise and brainwashing tools of western commercialism before the Berlin Wall came down. His art, like his vision and his perspective on the world, is unique but also miraculous in its simplicity. Like light for Sebastian, in this issue all of our contributors share with us what they revere. Eleonora Biacchi and Maximillian De Xavier bring us into fetish caves and down rock and roll memory lane. Nick Onken and Brian Sassmann show us how fashion right now is nostalgic to the bright colors of the 50’s & casual chic nature of 90’s. It is also the mark of a new era for Collective. This is the premiere issue with our new Art Director David Roybayo. David is a dear friend, brilliant mind, and innovative designer and artist. Colombian born, based in Paris, David’s artistic voice is one that we look forward to sharing with you.

Kendra dos Remedios

Coming from a family of artists and traveling the world, Kendra dos Remedios has been enveloped with all mediums of art from a young age. Throughout her life she began developing an intrigue with the beautiful compositions of everyday life, which lead to her love of photography. Kendra has won various awards and continues to push her photography as she explores through the lens of her camera. Kendra currently resides in Los Angeles.

BRIAN SASSMANN

Brian Sassmann is a New York City based photographer. However, his work takes him all over the world. From the Ganges flood plain in India, the jungles of Central America, the ancient mosques of Instanbul, Iceland’s emptiness, Europe’s capitols of fashion and throughout the vast USA. Travel is an integral part of his work. Brian seems to find inspiration in everyday living as well as beautifully orchestrated labors of love.

NICK ONKEN

Nick Onken, a big believer in living in the moment, his photos follow suit. With a designer’s eye, he’s constantly searching for that perfect moment to tell the whole story. The pursuit of these moments has taken him around the world. His love of travel has recently collided with his career and he’s published his first book, Photo Trekking. It’s also moved him from Los Angeles to New York City in mid 2009, abandoning the beautiful weather and tropical views in favor of subway lunatics and urban skylarking. The latter of which obviously lead to more interesting moments. You’ll never catch a palm tree doing back flips on a crowded train.
