Nutritional Self–Assessment Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. "It can be used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health complications" (CDC, 2015) but it is not a reliable source of information to get a person's body fatness or health of an individual. My BMI score is 24.4; to find that, I divided my weight in kilograms (70.9 kg) by the square of height in meters (2.9 m). HAMWI is used to calculate the ideal body weight of an individual based on their height and body frame (FitnessHealth101, 2016). "Johnny Bowden explains that the American diet does not supply the essential vitamins and minerals necessary for good health" (Bowden). Bowden is known to be "The Nutrition Myth Buster", and is also an expert on weight loss and health. "Vitamin and minerals are essential to life. You can believe it or not, but your body will not function properly without them" (Bowden). If so is it possible that a healthy diet and certain foods can fight diseases? Eating vitamins, minerals, and nutrition may help fight off certain diseases.
"Vitamin supplements are important in preventing deficiency and diseases. New research suggests that taking increased amounts of vitamins C, E and A, may help reduce risk of cancer and heart disease" (Rumpf). For example, when you take vitamin C you would take 500–3000 mg a day.
"The safety of vitamin E is now beyond question, and there seems to be the beginnings of good evidence to suggest that it might help prevent cancer, heart disease and stroke (Repine–Masci)." You can find vitamin E in spinach, sunflower seeds, almonds and etc. "Other people may have special nutritional needs or health problems that require extra vitamins. If your diet is normal and healthy, vitamin supplements are not needed" (Rumph).
Minerals are easily as important as vitamins and can be often left out. "Research shows that 75 percent of women are deficient in this mineral, which is needed not only for our bones but for our blood sugar control" (Bowden). We cannot produce

When I first began this project I thought the 7 day eating log was going to be a waste of time, but now that have completed it I realize that it is actually very beneficial. I never realized how bad I was eating until I took a step back and looked at it. This has greatly impacted me to change my eating habits, and start to chose healthier foods. Something I learned about myself is that I have a lack of will power when it comes to certain types of candy or food. I saw ice cream come up more than once on the list, which isn't very healthy. I think this will affect my lifestyle by opening my eyes to my problems with eating, and now I need to correct them.

I got some really good insights on how terrible fast food is for you. The man's health in the movie was declining so rapidly the doctors told him he needed to stop with this high fat diet. When I got out of the movie I took a step back and examined myself and my fast food eating habits. Granted I hate McDonalds, but I do have a weakness for Taco Bell and KFC, and both of them are almost as bad as McDonalds. After watching this movie I am going to seriously cut back on all my fast food intake. I think now, after watching the movie, I will think twice before I chose to go to a fast food place, and try to find something a little more healthy.
My trip to the health food store was more of an adventure than I thought it was going to be. First the search to just find the store took some time, and then the search inside the store to find the perfect food took even longer. While in the store I discovered that some of the foods that I love to eat could simply be switched out with an all natural organic product. This made a great impact on me because when I got back from the store I took a look at my 7 day eating log and realized how many of the item on there I could change for an all natural version. I learned that I really had no idea what it was like to eat healthy. I thought for the longest time that what I was eating was pretty healthy, but looking around the store and realizing that

The Importance of Diet and Nutrition
A child's diet and nutrition is a growing concern. Parenting is one of the most difficult jobs in the world, and often times parents struggle just to get their children to eat. Most parents assume that as long as their children eat something, it is fine to let them eat what they want. The wrong approach to food can give children mixed messages about proper nutrition and lead to serious problems later. Parents are solely responsible for children's poor eating habits.

Children need balanced diets, rich in nutrients, to grow and develop properly. The increase in processed foods has left its mark both physically and mentally. It can affect school as well as home life by causing numerous side effects. According to the Environmed Research Inc., children may suffer from tiredness, headaches, stomach aches, and ear infections due to poor diet as well as hyperactivity and moodiness. Obesity is a growing concern. "School children are heavier today than ever before." (Mount 213) Parents must use this knowledge as incentive to better their children's diets.
Although many parents are aware of the negative effects of poor nutrition, few actually take action. The American society is one of the most educated about nutrition, but still maintains unhealthy habits. Perhaps parents enjoy the convenience of processed foods too much to give them up. Many people nowadays looking at themselves in the mirror are upset with what they see. Too much fat, or to much skin, not enough muscle. All are factors of improper nutrition. The twenty–first century, fitness has become more and more important to people in this society. Obesity rates are increasing and people are now starting to realize things need to change. Most people think that the gym will solve these issues. This is incorrect; the most important part of getting the body that is desired is nutrition. Workouts are vital but what the body consumes is key. The real question is what are the effects of proper supplementation and nutrition on fitness? In order to gain weight more calories are needed. To lose weight fewer calories are needed. A low calorie diet will cause the body to use up stored body fat for energy, not consuming enough calories is known as a calorie deficit. Having a high calorie diet to gain eight will cause the body to bulk up. Consuming more calories is known as a calorie surplus. Depending on the goal the number of grams needed for the body varies. This does not mean sugars, oils and fast foods count as calories that benefit the body. Healthy nutrition is clean dieting with natural fats, natural sugars and proper balancing. Proper nutrition is one of the most essential elements to being healthy and living a long life. People deal with food every day, and food has been a part of life since the beginning of civilization. What we eat becomes our diet, and our diet plays a major role in deciding how healthy we are and how well our body functions. Without proper diet, our body cannot carry out the functions it needs to perform. Most people have some common knowledge on what is good and what is bad for the human body to consume. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains are some common items people think of when they think of healthy foods. These include obesity, diabetes, and several heart conditions. Obesity is the term used for someone who qualifies as significantly overweight.
A BMI (Body Mass Index) records weight in relation to height. A BMI of 25 is overweight and a BMI of 30 is obese. Obesity is not a disease in its self but it can lead to different health issues, some fatal. Obesity can be related to eighty percent of type two diabetes, seventy percent of cardiovascular disease, thirty percent to gall bladder surgeries, and forty two percent to breast and colon cancer. Unfortunately, obesity rates in people are rising rapidly. The United States alone had an obesity rate of twenty six percent in 2007. Some cases of obesity are gene related, but most other cases are a result of improper dieting and exercise among the individual ("Why Is Proper Nutrition Important?", Case Western Reserve University). Type II diabetes is another major effect from improper diet and nutrition. When someone is a type II diabetic, their body either produces too little of an amount of insulin, or their body's cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is important in helping your body use sugar for Kavanaugh 3 energy. When a person consumes food with sugar, the sugar is broken down into glucose. Obesity is associated with a vast number of health problems. It is often looked at as just a severe cosmetic problem. In actuality, in addition to being cosmetic, obesity is one of the leading causes of major health issues in the United States. According to medical news today, obesity is a key risk factor for several conditions and diseases including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, several types of cancers, gallbladder disease and gall stones, osteoarthritis, gout, and breathing problems including asthma and sleep apnea. These health factors have also been liked to premature deaths in obese people. Before this semester started, my diet was in horrible condition. Learning all about nutrition and what it can and will do for your body has made me more aware of what I eat. Every Time I look at my plate, I think " oh this is carbs, protein or fats". I am changing the way I feed my body, and this food diary has showed me what I have been missing from my diet. My total calorie intake was under the recommended ranges for all three days. I believe I am fair on the balance of calorie consumption to each macronutrient. My diet is not perfect, but this project has helped me critique it to my advantage. On September 1st, I only got 39% of my calories from carbohydrates when I should get a minimum of 45%. Since I was under, my body was not getting enough nutrients to support the brain and nervous system. This means that my brain was not functioning to its full potential that day. Carbohydrates are necessary for energy, and without enough carbs, your body will have to feed off of protein – protein sparing action. The range for protein is 10–35% of your daily caloric intake and since I am active, 20–25% is ideal for my body to function off of. For all three days I hit the target ranges. Protein helps my body repair itself after a tough workout, and without adequate amounts of protein, my body won't have necessary building blocks for enzyme and hormonal production. Out of all three days, my fat intake was higher than it should have been. All the extra fat I ate, turned into Get

Anyone who is on a quest to live a long and healthy life should understands how important diet and nutrition are to achieving the physically healthy body. Most of us delve deep into exercise and healthy eating but we gloss over the topic of nutrition. There is a distinction that should be made between diet and nutrition, these two concepts are mutually exclusive. Dieting involves making sure we eat right, cut out the fats and the carbs, count daily calorie intake in our quest to either lose weight or get back to a healthier size. Nutrition looks at the food we eat. It has to do with what our body derives from what we feed it in terms of nutrients.

The easiest way to lower a persons' risk of lifestyle disease is to change their diet to a more healthful one, and staying out of harmful environments. So, lifestyle diseases are diseases that you can't always control but a person can greatly lower his risk of obtaining them. There are six different food groups and they are: Fruit, Grain, Lean Meat and Poultry, Milk and Dairy, and Vegetables. You should eat mostly grains, vegetables, and fruits. From most to least you should eat: Grain, Vegetables, Fruit, Lean Meat and Poultry, Milk and Dairy, and then lastly fats, oils, and sweets. You should in small amounts and only sometimes eat fats, oils, and sweets. All of these different food groups contribute to your daily diet. The Daily intake guidelines are the amounts and percentages of fats, proteins, carbs, etc. that a person should intake every day for healthy eating. These guidelines are based on your weight; for example a person who weighs 100 lbs. would need less carbs than a person who weighs 200 lbs. It is also based on your level of physical activity, height, and age. The daily intake (DI) you see on various foods is based on an average adult's daily requirement of 8700kJ. Reflective Essay On Nutrition
As we step into the new year and reflect back on the joys and blessings that we've shared and experienced over 2017, it's important to remember an epidemic that millions of people face around the world. People are suffering from malnutrition and undernutrition on a global scale. When we take a moment to look forward to our own resolutions, opportunities, and positive change, we should also consider making a positive change for people in need, especially those who aren't receiving proper nutrition and don't have enough to eat. Not having adequate access to food prevents children from reaching their full potential.
Understanding Malnutrition
Malnutrition at its core is a dietary deficiency that results in poor health conditions. This occurs when people eat too much of the wrong thing or when people don't eat enough of the right thing. The results of malnutrition can scale from extremely malnourished to extremely obese depending on the scale and severity of the malnutrition. The World Health Organization has stated that malnutrition is the single most dangerous threat to global public health and contributes to 45 percent of deaths of children under the age of five. Hunger often leads to disease, which in many developing countries without proper healthcare can lead to death. Hunger slows recovery time from wounds and illnesses, and complicates diseases such as measles, pneumonia, and diarrhea.
The Major Causes of Malnutrition
There are a large number of factors to consider when determining the causes of malnutrition. Many of these causes are prevalent in developing countries, but can also exist in wealthier and more developed countries as well.
Poverty and Socioeconomic Status
Very often poverty is the number one underlying reason behind undernourished children. In villages where the income level is restricted, parents may be unable to provide adequate nutrition to their children. The number of people affected by extreme poverty in developing African countries has nearly doubled, from 164 million to some 313 million. Poverty doesn't always result in malnutrition, but it does affect the availability of food for the most vulnerable populations. Over 90 percent of malnourished people live in developing

Food is essential for our bodies to: develop, replace and repair cells and tissues; produce energy to keep warm, move and work; carry out chemical processes such as the digestion of food; protect against, resist and fight infection and recover from sickness. Most people are always rushed due to their hectic schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets and simply just go through a drive thru like me. That being the case, I was over in added sugars, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. More importantly I was also lacking dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin E. I believe that I am not making healthyfood choices and that is consequently the reason why I am lacking and over nutrients, minerals, and vitamins. In order to be healthy, I must improve my food choices. I tend to go to McDonald's often because I am too lazy to actually make myself something healthy. I should be more careful with my diet, because in the long run it can have severely affect my health. For instance, heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and etc. On the other hand, eating a balanced diet is vital for good health and wellbeing. It provides our bodies with the energy, protein, essential fats, vitamins and minerals to live, grow and function properly for many years.
