The Messenger A SIMPLE HELP FOR SPENDING TIME IN YOUR BIBLE By Lakan Mariano A lot of people have told me over the years that they would love to spend more time in the Bible but they easily get distracted. Chores, the news, tight schedules, social media, sports—these all steal the time they normally set aside for time in God's Word. When I talk to people I get the impression that they view time in their Bible as a “to do” item on their check list of Christian responsibilities. Feeling this way about your time in God's Word is a sure way to kill your motivation. Even if you spend time in the Bible, when you see time in God's Word this way, you are more glad to be done with it than excited about what the Lord is telling you. JOIN A SMALL GROUP Instead of struggling alone, find a small group of three to six people with whom you can read and study the Bible on a regular basis, at least once a week. I used to think that the pattern of the Christian walk was like this: my personal walk with Christ will lead me to participate more regularly in church activities. The biblical pattern is actually the reverse of this.

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-13). The body of Christ—that is us, believers in the local church! And we are being built up together. Becoming mature in the unity of the faith in the knowledge of Jesus Christ is a group effort. So is attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. When you keep reading, you will notice all the plural pronouns: “Then WE will no longer be infants” “... speaking the truth in love, WE will grow”

“From him the WHOLE BODY, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work...” What you are learning in a small group will motivate you to dive into your Bible on your own. So find a small group and join it. Many of us who grew up in church love the hymn, “I Come to the Garden Alone.” It is a sweet song, but you cannot grow in your walk with Christ alone. ~ Lakan
