The Messenger LOOK FOR THE REAL REWARD By Lakan Mariano

Several years ago, our senior adults and I were attending a day conference at a retreat and conference center. The director of the camp gave an update of how much they have raised so far for a building project. Then she announced, “And today, we have with us a couple who gave $10,000 for this project!” The attendees gave a sustained and thunderous applause as the director called to the stage the couple who donated the large amount. Jesus tells us, “When you do something for someone else, don’t call attention to yourself” (Matthew 6:2, MSG). Pride is so sinister. A little bit of it goes a long way and will ruin all your good intentions. “It only takes a minute amount of yeast, you know, to permeate an entire loaf of bread” (Galatians 5:9, MSG). Jesus said, “Be especially careful when you are trying to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won’t be applauding” (Matthew 6:1, MSG). When the Holy Spirit leads you to do something good for someone else, avoid nullifying your gift to God by posing for pictures or by announcing it on social media. “The God who gifted you with the desire to gift someone else with what you have is the One and only audience that matters. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:3-4). ~ Lakan
