The Messenger WEDDING DAY By Lakan Mariano The light coming through the large colorful stain glass windows on both sides of the chapel brought both a sense of life and holiness to the event. At the front stood a rugged rectangular arch made from unfinished four-by-four beams. On it hung two white cloths, each side pulled to the vertical beams like a curtain, draping it with elegance. The back doors of the chapel closed for a brief moment, ushering a hush in the congregation. Then the doors opened again and the wedding procession began. My friend Ed, the officiating minister and grandfather of the bride led the groom and his attendants to the front. They were followed by the bridesmaids, dressed elegantly in their pastel gowns and bright smiles. The three ring-bearers followed, the youngest looking intimidated by the crowd clung to the side of the oldest of the three. I turned again and there were six flower girls straight from the impressionist canvas of Albert Degas walking in two-by-two. Then the back doors closed again. The music changed, and you could sense the anticipation. Then the doors opened again revealing the beautiful bride escorted by her father. Ed reminded the couple that it was God who designed the marriage. “Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness....' So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them” (Genesis 1:26, 27, 28). “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). My mind drifted back to yesterday, when I stood at the front of the church, anxiously waiting for Kim to walk in. When the back doors opened and as Kim started to walk towards me escorted by her dad, my eyes filled with tears and my heart was filled with so much love for her that I thought, “I don't think I can ever love Kim more than I love her today.” But I was wrong. As the Lord Jesus drew our hearts to him more and more through the scriptures and through life, our love for each other grew more and more. With Kim gone now for close to five years, I have come to realize that marriage is greater than the sum total of two people's lives. What we do with our marriage will echo in eternity (a beautiful line from the movie Gladiator). All the preparation, the decorations, the invitations, all the planning that go into a wedding is recognition of how important and beautiful it is. It is an applause to the goodness of God who in his wisdom designed the marriage which brings a man and a woman together as husband and wife. For all the struggles we go through life as believers in Jesus Christ, we can look forward to our wedding day, when our bridegroom the Lord Jesus Christ, comes back for his bride, the Church, and so we will dance with him happily ever after.
