The Messenger EVERY CHILD A GIFT FROM THE LORD By Lakan Mariano “Guess what,” I announced excitedly to a group of people. “Jerry and Linda are expecting another child!” Jerry and Linda had four beautiful children and they were expecting their fifth child. Growing up with three brothers and two sisters I remembered the fun times we had, especially us boys who are a few years younger than our sisters. We fought and played, we roamed and ran in the open field not far from our house in Old Santa Mesa in Manila. We made our own slingshots from tree branches and old inner tubes and leather from the tongue of an old shoe for the pocket that held the stone. Old pieces of lumber and ball bearings were turned into a homemade scooter. We chased butterflies and grasshoppers and admired the flickering fireflies against the dark early summer nights. To me, having a big family, is a lot of fun. So it surprised me that a couple of people reacted negatively to the news that this young couple was expecting their fifth child. “Don't they know what causes that,” one of them sneered. Another asked, or better, stated, “Are they crazy??!!” Many Christians are horrified by abortion and talk of infanticide because we know what the Bible says: “For you, LORD, created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:13-16). Each child in the womb is God's special creation. God alone creates life. God alone opens the womb. Consider barren Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Hannah, and Elizabeth. Believers' attitude about life should be consistent. If we believe what the Bible says that God is the one who creates life in the womb, we will treasure every single baby as God's gift, whether it is the first baby, or the fifth one. Every single one of them is a gift from the Lord. ~Lakan
