The Messenger STUDYING CHURCH HISTORY Message from Uganda by Lakan Mariano
What may seem to many as a bad time in the history of the Church--when Christians were persecuted and killed for their faith, when they hid and worshiped in homes and catacombs--was actually a sweet time. Christians loved each other, persecution simply fed the fire of evangelism that burned in their hearts, and the pagan world took notice because of the way they lived their lives. What may seem to many as a great time in the history of the Church--when Constantine became emperor and stopped all the persecutions, and the Roman Empire made it illegal not to be a Christian--was the beginning of doctrinal compromise and the end of evangelism and missions. The BTCP (Bible Training Centre for Pastors) students almost feel like they are wading through a murky swamp going through the period of Imperial Christianity and the Dark Ages.

But Jesus is always faithful to carry out His redemptive plan. There is always a small remnant in the Church who carry high the torch of the gospel. I am so glad Jesus is gracious. I am so thankful He is merciful. I am encouraged that He sovereignty rules over His Church and human history. He says, "My purpose still stand, and I will do what I please" (Isaiah 46:10). ~~Lakan
