The Messenger AMAZED By Lakan Mariano Jesus interrupted the humdrum of daily life in many towns and villages. He surprised people with his amazing teaching that cut through the clutter of tradition. He freed people from debilitating diseases. He cleansed many from unclean spirits. Jesus was amazing! When Jesus was confronted by a demon-possessed man at the synagogue in Capernaum, he ordered the demon to leave the man. “At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him” (Mark 1:26). “The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, 'What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him'” (Mark 1:27). The people were dumbfounded when they saw what Jesus did to a paralytic. “The man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, 'We’ve never seen anything like this before!'” (Mark 2:12). Time after time Jesus amazed his disciples and many other people by what he did and what said. When Jesus taught in his hometown of Nazareth, people were amazed at his knowledge and the miracles he performed. But they “were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.” The saying was true for Jesus: familiarity breeds contempt. “'Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?' Then they scoffed, 'He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us'” (Mark 6:2-3). Now it was Jesus' turn to be amazed. “He was amazed at their unbelief” (Mark 6:6). With all that Jesus has done, all that he does for his children, we can amaze Jesus with our unbelief— prayerlessness, lack of worship, or worse, worship that is focused on us not on him, busyness of life that distances us from him, spiritual malnutrition from a meager diet of God's Word. But here is what God promises to his children, believers in Jesus Christ, when they are amazed by Christ: “But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).
