The Messenger MUTUAL SUBMISSION By Lakan Mariano There were expressions that used to baffle me. “Six of one, half a dozen of the other.” “Paint the town red.” Living in Texas, I have to constantly ask meanings of expressions. “I'm madder than a wet hen!” “He's all hat and no cattle.” As long as I have been speaking English, it still trips me from time to time. There are Bible words/concepts that still trips many Christians. Three men giddily gathered around me as I got in line at the wedding reception. “Good service, Pastor,” one of them started. “We can't believe you told the bride to submit to her husband,” he said. “I was reading from the Bible.” “The Bible says that?” I opened my Bible to Ephesians and showed them. They stared at the text like looking at some strange creature. The mistake that people often make is they confuse “submission” with “subservience.” Subservience is unquestioning servility, like how a slave is to his master. Submission is a military term that means for one to assume his God-given responsibility.

God tells us that one of the characteristics of both husband and wife being filled with the Holy Spirit (letting the word of Christ dwell in them richly”) is “submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:21). Submitting to ONE ANOTHER. Both husband and wife gladly and responsibly assuming the position in the marriage God has assigned to each. ~Lakan
