The Messenger PRAY SPECIFICALLY By Lakan Mariano You can imagine him feeling his way through the crowd that slowly parts to make a way for him. His steps unsteady, his left arm clutching a walking stick, his right hand stretched out in front of him, feeling his way. Blind Bartimaeus was sitting at the roadside by the gate in Jericho when he heard the commotion. He must have heard the murmur in the crowd, “It's Jesus!” He probably stood up, turned his head toward the crowd and began to shout as loud as he could so that he could be heard above the din, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” (Mark 10:47). When Jesus called for him, Jesus asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” It was obvious what Bartimaeus needed. Everyone could see that. Surely Jesus knew what he wanted from him. Bartimaeus did not make all that fuss to come to Jesus and pray, “Lead, guide, and direct me today.” Bartimaeus said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” When Jesus asked the question, he was not looking for information. He was looking for faith. Bartimaeus trusted Jesus for a specific need that he had. And he received what he specifically asked for. Believers in Jesus Christ have a Father who delights in answering his children's specific prayers. The question is not whether God hears us or cares about us. The question is whether we trust him with our specific needs. “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11). ~Lakan
