The Messenger BOOKENDS By Lakan Mariano Ted walked in to the church office but stopped right at the door, his towering 6-foot seven-inch figure filling the whole doorway. I had known Ted for many years and I could tell by his face and sagging shoulders that there was something terribly wrong. “What’s the matter, Ted?”

He looked at me and tears began to fill his eyes and then freely spilled out onto his cheeks. He moved his lips but seemed unable to talk. After he composed himself, he said, “I just came from the doctor’s office and I have incurable cancer.” Life can turn on a dime. One moment, things are going great, then you get a phone call from the police. Or a pink slip. Or a spouse walks out on you. If your life is simply defined by what happens to you, then you are in for dejection, depression, and bitterness. Believers in Jesus Christ face the same kind of troubles but they are not without hope. Peter bookends our troubles with a perspective that looks back on one end, and looks forward on the other end. The first bookend: “In all this you GREAT REJOICE” (1 Peter 1:6, emphasis mine). “All this” refers to what believers have in Christ—great mercy, new birth, a living hope, and our inheritance in heaven that will never perish, spoil, or fade (1:3-5). The second bookend: “Though you have not seen Him (Christ), you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an INEXPRESSIBLE AND GLORIOUS JOY” (1:8, emphasis mine). The trials and hardships in life “have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1:7). These two bookends of biblical joy—delighting in Christ our good God no matter our circumstances—are what hold us up and keep us going when times are tough: “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials” (1:6). What’s holding you up? Or more to the point, who’s holding you up? ~Lakan “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials” (1 Peter 1:6).
