The Messenger GOD UNDERSTANDS ME By Lakan Mariano People, including my family, tease me about my accent. I still struggle with many Texas idioms. But my worst struggle is with prepositions. Years ago, a friend was taken to the emergency room. He had been sick with the flu and was dehydrated. He was tossing about in pain when I got to the emergency room. Word got out and I was receiving tons of texts asking how he was doing. After getting some fluids and some pain medication, he fell sound asleep. So I sent out a text: “He's being cared for, finally gotten relief. He's knocked up.”

My phone blew up with all kinds of funny comments, explaining what I texted, expressing mock amazement that my male friend was pregnant. I am so glad that my Father in heaven can understand my imperfect speech when I pray. I am so glad I do not have to learn Hebrew for God to know what I am praying about. I am so relieved that before a word is on my tongue God already knows what I am about to say (Psalm 139:4). I am so glad my Father in heaven can make sense of what I cannot even put into words. “Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans” (Romans 8:26, MESSAGE). I am so glad that as a believer in Jesus Christ I am never alone in my prayers. The Holy Spirit is right there with me praying for me. “And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God” (Romans 8:27). I am so glad that my Savior and my Lord is also praying for me. “Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” (Romans 8:34). Sitting alone by my desk at home praying I am not alone. The triune God is there with me. The God who knows my fears, my joys, my desires. The God who knows me inside and out and loves me and cares for me and watches over me. The loving God who understands my accent.

If you know Christ as your Savior and Lord that is who your God is, and that is how he cares for you. He understands your garbled speech, your wordless sighs. He understands you.
