The Messenger THE POINT By Lakan Mariano Several texts for prayer were coming in one on top of the other. I gathered the staff at the church office and we prayed for those needs, one of which was immediate. About thirty minutes later I received a text that the Lord answered our prayer for that immediate need. There is a thick stack of 3X5 cards of answered prayers in my office, people we have prayed for during our Wednesday prayer meeting. It is easy to focus on the fact that we prayed when prayers are answered. But the focus should be that God hears and cares about his children and he answered our prayers. The point is that God hears. The point is God. “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him” (Matthew 7:9-11, NLT). Prayer is not about how great prayers warriors we are. Prayer is about believers in the Lord Jesus Christ submitting to the sovereign care of our great God. I have another stack of 3X5 cards of prayers requests. Many of those we have been praying for a long time. They are a good reminder that prayer is not some formulaic magic that we do to get the desired response. The point of prayer is God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. ~Lakan
