The Messenger SURPRISED BY THE CRUCIFIXION By Lakan Mariano Oh, how easy it is to be short-sighted! Too often we define Christ by the circumstances we face. You can almost imagine Cleopas and his companion, “their faces downcast,” wearily trudging along, dejected that their hopes were crushed. “We had hoped that Jesus was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:21). But “they crucified him” (v. 20). What Cleopas and his companion saw as the dashing of their hopes—“they crucified him”—was the very act that actually fulfilled what they were hoping for in a far greater way than they even imagined. Their eyes were probably set on their redemption from Roman rule and tyranny. But Jesus accomplished so much more for them than that. When life gets hard the believer in Jesus Christ can be tempted to set his eyes on what is simply right in front of him—his problems, his heartaches, his disappointments, his dashed hopes. You are tempted to define God by how you are feeling, what you are going through. When you feel overwhelmed by your circumstances, look to the cross of Christ. “God who did not spare his own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32). The good God who willingly gave up His Son for you is the same good God who will graciously provide for you and take care of you. Jesus said, “If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving” (Matthew 6:30-31, MSG).
