The Messenger LIFE-ON-LIFE By Lakan Mariano “So, you’re going to Amarillo tomorrow,” Kim asked. We had just turned off the lights and were enjoying visiting in the dark. We were in our twenties then living on Ocla Street in Borger, Texas. “Yes, he wants me to go with him to visit some people at Northwest Hospital.” Then after a long period of silence, I said, “I think he enjoys hanging out with me.” Ken and I hung out together regularly. We met for coffee and donuts at Mr. Treat’s on Main Street in Borger. We also frequented Nu-Way Café on the south side of Main Street. We had casual conversations—family, work, sports, politics. But our conversations always made their way to the scriptures. What it means to follow Christ, to live the Christian life. Often, he would answer my questions with questions, then a challenge to look them up in the Bible and tell him what the Bible says the next time we met. Ken also helped me do some repair work both at our house and also the office. There were times he asked me to help him work on his car or move some furniture. From time to time our families would have dinner together. Shannon, their daughter, baby-sat Micah and Josh when they were little. After over a year of this type of relationship, I asked Ken one day a big favor. I remember we were standing in my office at Bruce & Son’s and he was getting ready to leave.
“Ken, would you disciple me?” He looked at me with an amused and incredulous look then said with a smile, “What do you think I have been doing?” Kim and I benefited from the six-courses of Navigator 2:7. I still use Lewis Sperry Chafer’s Major Bible Themes with some small groups. But one valuable lesson I learned from Ken and have since and have seen in the life of the Lord Jesus and the Apostle Paul was discipleship is much more than a course. It is life on life. Living and learning and growing and ministering and eating and laughing and praying and worshiping and hurting together. “You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:1-2). After I taught a Bible study at Mount Carmel in Israel last December, our guide Gila asked me, “Are you sure you’ve never been to Israel before? You seem to be very knowledgeable about this place. Where did you study?” I pointed to Ken. ~ Lakan
