The Messenger GIVING MEANING AND FLAVOR TO OUR LIFE By Lakan Mariano Cold-hearted love is no love. To be diligent in ministry and fastidious in religious duties and have no affection for Christ is like a cold left-over dinner served straight from the fridge. Listen to what Jesus told the Laodiceans and see if anything describes you, “I know you inside and out, and find little to my liking. You’re not cold, you’re not hot—far better to be either cold or hot! You’re stale. You’re stagnant. You make me want to vomit. You brag, ‘I’m rich, I’ve got it made, I need nothing from anyone,’ oblivious that in fact you’re a pitiful, blind beggar, threadbare and homeless” (Revelation 3:15-17, MSG). Our hearts as believers grow cold when our focus is on ourselves rather than on Christ, when we feed on man’s opinions rather than truth from God’s Word, when our first instinct when we are in trouble is to advertise our woes on social media instead of running to God. Jesus said to the Laodiceans, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me” (Revelation 3:20).

There is a reason Jesus’ invitation at the end of the gospel of John is surprisingly simple, “Come have breakfast with me” (John 21:12, my paraphrase). That intimate, organic closeness to Jesus is what gives meaning and flavor to our life and ministry. ~ Lakan
