The Messenger FINDING REST By Lakan Mariano We are all prone to busy-ness. Life and ministry can take their toll on everyone. After Jesus' disciples came back from an exhilarating mission trip where “they went out and preached that people should repent and they drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them” (Mark 6:12), they came back tired. So Jesus told them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:31). We need physical rest. My doctor once told me that adults should pay attention to our bodies like children do. When a child gets sleepy, he just goes to sleep wherever. A lot of adults will try to squeeze two or three or four more things to finish even they are dead tired. When you have little children or caring for aging parents, this is understandable. But we still need physical rest. But Jesus was not only talking about physical rest. He said, “Come with me.” Believers need rest for their bodies, but just as important, we need spiritual, mental, and emotional rest. And there is no getting this rest apart from being with Jesus—in his Word, in prayer, which is more than being on our knees reciting a litany of prayer requests. Spending time in the Bible and in prayer is talking to Jesus, listening to him, thinking about what he is saying to us. Over the years I keep going back to a post-resurrection of Jesus on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. I am amazed that the invitation that Jesus gave his disciples then, and I take to be an invitation he gives disciples today, is, “Come have breakfast with me” (John 21:12). I can see many believers ticking off the numerous items they have on their to-do list and saying to Jesus, “I've got too much to do. I just grabbed a poptart.” In This Issue From the Pastor AWANA Clubs Events & Upcoming Dates Ministry Opportunity Youth Ministries College Ministries

But, oh, how we need to just spend time with Jesus. Just to be in his presence. To rest in his grace. To be renewed by his beauty. To feel settled in his peace. To be embraced by his love. And for his love to rekindle the fire of love in our hearts for him. It is interesting that before Jesus told Peter what to do at the end of the gospel of John, three times he asked him, “Simon son of Jonah, do you love me?” Only when believers are rested in Christ can we be about his work.
