The Messenger ALL A GIFT By Lakan Mariano Every birthday. Every Christmas. For forty six years, she kept up with me. Even when I went back to the Philippines after my year as an exchange student she wrote me regularly. Our busload of exchange students were traveling east, heading to New York, in 1973 at the end of our year of studies. We stopped in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, just outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee and spent the week there. We were assigned to different families. I never forgot the address of where I stayed: 202 Roberts Drive. 202 was my Boy Scout troop number in elementary school. I also (Pictured with me are Mrs. Nancy Austin, and her son, never forgot the family I stayed with: Tanner and Glen, and daughter Debbie.) Nancy Austin and their son, Glen. Memories flooded my mind as I drove from my hotel in East Ridge, Tennessee to Forth Oglethorpe last week. Water skiing at Chickamauga Lake, where I learned that a solid physical object (me) could roll on top of a large amount of fluid (the lake). Enjoying the view and history at Lookout Mountain. A day trip to Six Flags Over Georgia.
As I zipped pass unfamiliar tall trees that lined Highway 146, I thought about how good God has been to me. I stayed with the Bruce’s in Pampa, Texas for less than a year as an exchange student. That relationship has blossomed through the years that our children wondered when they were little why they have so many grandparents. I stayed with the Austin’s for just one week. Mrs. Austin addresses her cards and letters to, “Dear son.” Glen calls me his brother from another mother. I drove past their house on Roberts Drive because I did not recognize it. When Glen opened the door and I walked in forty years seemed to have been compressed into nothing and it was just like I was walking in there as I did years ago. My heart was filled with joy as I hugged and kissed Mrs. Austin. The years have aged all of us but they have not diminished the sweetness of the relationship we have.

I often think about how good God is. Because of my sins, there is nothing I deserve but God's judgment. But he has given me sonship through Christ. He surprised me with Kim and the years we had together. He blessed me with our children and their spouses, and nine grandchildren. He blessed me with my parents and brothers and sisters who love me. He blessed me with the Bruce’s who opened their home and their lives to me. And he blessed me with Mom Austin and her family. It is all a gift. Everything is a gift. “Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God, the Creator of all light, and he shines forever without change or shadow” (James 1:17, TLB).
