The Messenger THE LOVING THING By Lakan Mariano
Not all religions are the same. There are not many roads that lead to God. That is not a put down on anyone but the loving truth that the Bible teaches. If someone is deathly sick and there is only one out of the hundred pills that will spare the life of the sick person, and you know which pill that is, the loving thing is to give him that pill. The gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ is the only way that sinful man can be forgiven of his sins and have a relationship with God. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
Jesus paid for our sins on the cross, all by himself, without any help from us. Salvation is in Christ alone. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18). Salvation is by grace alone, by faith alone. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Some religions claim that a person has to cooperate with God's grace for you to be saved. But dead people cannot do anything. And that was what God said about us. “...you were dead in your transgressions and sins” (Ephesians 2:1).
Over the years of doing funerals I have never had a dead person ask me where the snack bar was. R.C. Sproul once said that Jesus did not come to save drowning people, but Jesus came to give life to dead people. Like a beggar, a person simply receives by faith what Christ offers—eternal life. But unlike a beggar, a sinful man does not seek God nor can he ask for salvation. Salvation is all Christ. I have family and friends who go to churches that do not teach that salvation is in Christ alone, by grace alone, by faith alone. I love them and I want them to know the truth. And that is why I personally cannot nor will I lead our church to participate in an inter-faith event. For me to be involved in such an event is to make my family and friends think that all religions are the same when they are not. The loving thing is to not confuse them. What is at stake in the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ is nothing less than the eternal destiny of a person. Forever is a long time. A person will either spend it apart from Christ in a place God created for Satan and his demons called hell, or he will spend it in the presence of Christ. One of the scariest scriptures for me is Matthew 7:22-23 when Jesus said, “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ I do not wish that on anybody. And I pray that the Lord does not say that to my family and friends and people I know. ~Lakan
