The Messenger CHRIST DID NOT CALL YOU TO BE FAMOUS BUT TO BE FAITHFUL By Lakan Mariano Being a mom is hard. Kim went to Glorieta, New Mexico for a five-day conference years ago when Micah was about five years old and Josh was three. I took off the whole week. I remember thinking, “How hard can this be?” It was a fun week but when Kim got home, I went to bed, exhausted. We were discussing in our BTCP (Bible Training Centre for Pastors) about the presence of Christ in the ordinary and routine things in life and the topic of motherhood came up. I mentioned to them that Susanna Wesley had nineteen children. She was used to big families because she was the 25th child of twenty five children. I told the group that out of Susanna’s nineteen children we know two of them well—John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, and his brother, Charles, author of more than six thousand hyms many of which we still sing today, like, “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” On the way home after class that night, I thought about many moms who faithfully care for and love their children who have never had children who rose to fame. Then Hebrews 11 came to mind. Some call Hebrews 11 “The Hall of Faith,” because it mentions men and women who walked by faith no matter what their circumstances were. I thought about the last part of the chapter where the writer no longer used proper names but started using pronouns: “Women,” “others,” “some,” “they,” “them,” “these.” Most moms belong to this group. Most Christians belong to this group. I am so glad God did not call us to be famous but simply to be faithful. And I am so glad that while many will never be famous in this life, Christ knows you. He knows you by name, knows what you are going through, knows your dreams and your fears. And He loves you. “Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end” (John 13:1). He loved you to the fullest extent of his ability to love us. He gave up his life for you. The world may not know you, but Jesus knows you. ~Lakan
