The Messenger LIGHT IN THE STORM By Lakan Mariano “I heard the rumbling, whirring sound of the tornado outside,” a friend of mine said, his voice cracking with emotion. “Then I heard the tree outside our house crack. I was very afraid for my wife and our granddaughter who was spending the night with us.” Most of San Angelo were awakened yesterday by the buzzing of our phones. First it was a tornado warning. Then, seek shelter immediately. Torrents of rain. Strong winds. Then in some areas tornadoes. Many areas in San Angelo lost their electricity. Several crossings by the arroyo were covered in flood waters. The morning sun was blocked out by persistent dark threatening clouds. Rain continued to pour. My friend showed me pictures around their house and their neighborhood. A 2X4 piece stuck on his yard, like someone hammered it there. Another piece of 2X4 was impaled on the side of his house. Neighbors who lost a whole roof. Houses with roof damages. Fences down. Driving to church yesterday morning I saw a lot of broken tree limbs by Angelo State University. Debris everywhere. I did not realize the devastation the storm wrought until I started talking to people from different parts of town. Which was something beautiful in the midst of the storm. Jeff Box texted me checking on us. I spoke with Bobby Roger, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, and he told me how the police had to rescue a church member after her roof was blown away. I received texts from Ed Jones in Denton, Texas and from Brian Foor in Maryland. Doreen Bruce, my American mom, called me from Oklahoma to check on us. People caring for others. We had a large window at church blown off, scattering pieces everywhere. Several people came yesterday afternoon with vacuum cleaners and brooms and rags and cleaned up. Several people showed up at a church member's house that had large limbs broken. Two church members, neighbors, helped each other out. Neighbors and friends helping each other. Storms have a way of making us care about others other than ourselves. Especially for believers in Jesus Christ, storms have a tendency to showcase the light of Christ. “You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world” (Matthew 5:14, MSG).
