The Messenger PERSPECTIVE By Lakan Mariano Yes, God is good, no matter what! There were little kids running around and the house was loud and noisy with joyful banter and laughter. The birthday party for Reagan Stephenson at their house was in full swing when I arrived. Ten years ago, Kim and I visited baby Reagan and her mom Stacy at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston while Reagan waited for a heart transplant. As I was holding Reagan in my arms and walking her around the hospital room on the 17th floor trying to get her to fall asleep, Kim and Stacy were talking. Stacy said to Kim, “God can heal my baby by healing the heart she was born with, or He can heal her by giving her a new heart, or He can heal her by calling her home. However God chooses to heal Reagan, I am thankful to the Lord for giving me the opportunity to be her mom and to get to spend the kind of time I have gotten to spend with her.”
During that same time there was a boy, about Reagan’s age, who also needed a heart transplant. I met the parents the first night they were there and prayed with them. A month or so later, with their son’s condition worsening, some people from their church visited them. It devastated the parents when they were told that if they just had enough faith their son would be healed and they could take him home. God is good in life and in death. God is good in good and bad circumstances. He sovereignly cares for his children. Believers know that Jesus’ love will never fail and nothing can separate us from his love. We experience his grace in the hardest of times, his mercies are new every morning. Our perspective in times of trouble alleviates the hardship and gives us hope.
