The Messenger THE SILENT WITNESS By Lakan Mariano I can still see Rachel, not quite a year old, sitting in her wood green high chair Kim also used as a child, her little legs moving back and forth constantly, while eating the pancakes on her plate. Micah and Josh were ten and eight years old, respectively, enjoying their breakfast while we were visiting about their day, laughing and enjoying visiting. Kim finally sat down to eat. After thanking the Lord for a restful night and for the food, I started reading from the book of Acts. As I set the table one day recently for a family gathering I thought about how the dining table has been a silent witness to many a family meal. It has heard many of the Bible stories we read to the kids. It has been privy to the prayers we said around it, not just thanking the Lord for our food but for a lot of different needs we have had. Josh’s Ford Tempo, his first car which he inherited from Micah which he inherited from me, conked out on him. The mechanic told me the day before that the car died a natural death and could not be resuscitated, unless we spent a lot of money which we did not have. Micah chuckled and said, “It’ll be fun to see what the Lord does.” Another time, Micah, Josh, and Rachel joined Kim and me in praying that our warehouse in Borger would sell. Less than a week later, I announced to them at supper that Butch Turner, my brother-in-law who was also our realtor, told me that someone wanted to buy our warehouse. I can still remember the expression of delight on our children’s faces. “Wow! God answered our prayers! That was fast!” So much of family time—the sharing, the Bible studies, the prayers, the laughter, the games we played, the tears we shed, and the countless delicious meals we enjoyed together—happened right there around the dining table. Almost every day. Kim and I did not have a specific plan of how to teach our children God’s ways. We certainly had our share of mistakes. But we took the heart what the Lord said, “Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. TALK ABOUT THEM WHEREVER YOU ARE, SITTING AT HOME or walking in the street; talk about them FROM THE TIME YOU GET UP IN THE MORNING to when you fall into bed at night” (Deuteronomy 6:6-9, MSG).

One of the Josh’s high school friends was eating with us one time when the house phone rang. We continued to visit as we ignored the ringing. “Are you not going to answer that,” Josh’s friend asked. Josh said, “No. We’ll call them back after dinner.” Josh, and Micah and Rachel, understood even then the importance of the time around the dinner table.
