The Messenger THE PLUMBLINE OF TRUTH By Lakan Mariano Subjective impressions do not determine truth. He looked relaxed. There was a sweet smile on his face. He was very courteous to me even though he knew what I was there for. “I have been praying about this and the spirit has given me peace about it,” he said in a calm voice. “My wife and I made a mistake when we married and God has given me a second chance with my girlfriend. That is why I have filed for divorce.” I read about another man who “felt” the calling of God to do ministry in another state. His wife did not agree with him so he divorced her to do God's will. I often hear well-meaning believers say something like, “I feel very strongly about this,” or, “God has impressed me...” or “I feel the Lord leading me,” or “I sense God telling me,” as if these determine truth. Nothing wrong with strong feelings. The word of God burn like fire in the prophet Jeremiah's bones (Jeremiah 20:9). Nothing wrong with being impressed or led by the Spirit of God. David wrote, “The LORD leads me... beside quiet waters” (Psalm 23:2). Paul and his companions did not go east to Bithynia on their missionary journey because “the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to” (Acts 16:7). The text does not tell us how the Spirit of Jesus did this but it could have been a very strong impression. Our strong feelings alone and the sensing of God's leading alone cannot be the determiner of what truth is and how we are to acts as believers in Jesus Christ. How do we know if our impression is from God? How do we decide if God is the one leading us to do something? We hear many voices in our heads: our own selfish desires speak very loudly, the enemy hisses sweet religious lies to us, the world bombard us with worldly messages. So how do we determine truth? Through God's already revealed Word, the Bible. The Bible is God's plumbline of truth. If what we sense, what we feel, contradict God's Word, it is not from God. The Apostle John warns us, “Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world” (1 John 4:1).
